I just purchased this at Office Depot for the same price. I like it so far. It's quiet, has a large display, controls are simple and well placed, and I think it overs good performance at a reasonable price point.

I dont do gaming, but do a lot of full HD (1080p) h264 playing back and would like to eventually get an external blu-ray drive and hook the laptop to my big screen TV for viewing, I see this one has HDMI output, but is the on-board graphic card up to 1080p full HD play on a TV for very dynamic action movies? I also do a lot of video processing, is there anyway to put an iLink (1394) or something on this laptop? (I used to have an old 1394 card for laptop that I can just insert into a slot on the side of a laptop, but I haven't seen this kind of slots available in recent laptops anymore, so how it is done now?) Thank you for your help.

The Intel 4500 MHD has DXVA2 support, as far as I can tell. So the laptop should be able to handle 1080p content. http://text.broadbandreports.com/forum/r22619363-x264-and-Intel-4500MHD~start=40 seems to confirm it.
This laptop doesn't have either PCMCIA or the newer ExpressCard support, so yea, you wouldn't be able to use one of those. I guess you can possibly use a USB->firewire connector, but I don't know how performance/compatibility with those would be.
Probably better off either finding another laptop that either has firewire built in or a expresscard slot :/
Bad timing for me today. Added the laptop to cart for $599, added a copy of Windows 7 upgrade, went to check out and ... "The price of an item in your cart has increased. The price of the HP G71-340US Laptop is now $679."
Bastards. Delete, delete. They should have honored the price.

Oh do I wish that would be the case, put it in my cart and buy when I want to for the same price. Dell? are you listening also.

Wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't lost the discount while I was figuring out which W7 upgrade I wanted. Apparently the extra 5 mins I took to decide was long enough to go from $599 to $679.

Was at Amazon. OD & Staples charge sales tax. At my local rate, that's nearly 10%.
