Hey Everybody- I was just paying my Costco American Express bill and I was offered a pretty sweet deal at the AMEX website. The deal is 5 cents off every dollar spent at BP gas stations between now and 12/31/09. From what I read and understood, it's 5 cents per dollar, not gallon. After reading the terms, I couldn't find anything that says that I won't be getting that in addition the the 3% that I already get on gas using my Costco AMEX card. So, it looks like for the next month and a half, I'll be able to get 8% off my purchases at BP. That makes it better than actually going to Costco for gas. The best part of it is that I have a BP around the block. Costco is about 7 or 8 miles away. This deal has been confirmed by several others so I think that it is safe to remove the "YMMV" label. Good luck. It seems like a great deal.
does this help? i don't know if this site is legitimate.
Thanks for finding that. It legitimizes my post much better than me asking everyone to take my word for it. Your link is exactly what I got to from the AMEX secure site so I suppose it must be legit. Thanks again. Like I said, I couldn't find it again once I registered.

There are a lot of offers within the network to take advantage of. I'm happy to have noticed this on FW -- I probably wouldn't have found it otherwise.
Papa John's Receive medium 1-topping pizza for $0.99 with purchase of Large Specialty Pizza! Offer Valid 06/25/2009 - 12/31/2009 Receive a medium 1-topping pizza for $0.99 with purchase of a Large Specialty Pizza at regular menu price. Online only special. Original or thin crust. To redeem this offer, go to www.papajohns.com. You must use the promotion code: SELECT09 and purchase must be charged in full to any American Express ® Card. This offer is valid through December 31, 2009 at participating Papa John's restaurants
Join Costco or Auto-Renew for Two Months Free! Offer Valid 08/01/2009 - 01/31/2010 Join Costco as a new Executive or Gold Star Member using your American Express Card® and we'll extend your membership 2 months for free. When you join as an Executive Member, we'll also give you a $10 COSTCO Cash Card. Already a Costco member? Sign up for automatic membership renewal with your American Express Card and we'll extend your membership for two months - free!
I saw the same offer at the bottom of my online statement for my card and my wife's card. We both have separate accounts. Does not seem targeted in any way.
I see nothing in the terms and conditions to indicate this doesn't apply to BP gift card purchases. If that's correct, and you live in an area with cash/credit pricing, you are $.04 per gallon (in my area) better off buying a BP gift card with your enrolled AMEX card and using that gift card to buy your gas as the BP GC gets cash pricing at the pump.

thanks TheGMan.
I was already enrolled for auto renewal. So CSR did some research and said, offer is not for you but I will give you 2 months this time.
Anyways, if any one is already enrolled, it may be better to opt out of auto renewal first (1-800-774-2678) and then call another day for 2 free months (1-877-258-6032).
If you have secondary cardholders with different card number, do you have the register them separately or will their charges be eligible automatically since it is on the same account?

So has anyone seen a credit post to their AMEX account online?
Any reason buying gift cards wouldn't work with this?
I find them wanting the security code odd. I guess they use it to differentiate individual cards. Make me nervous handing over. This is an American Express site, right?

Yep. Amexnetwork is definitely a well-known AMEX domain.

5% on TOP of the 4% i get back from costco business AMEX?

Good thinking, but it won't work. Every time you make a purchase, it is coded differently. Credit will apply only to "gas" purchases and not "merchandise/other" or "gift card" when you buy something else inside of BP store. Even if you swipe you card at the register for the gas, it might not work correctly.
It is probably somewhere in small print, but you DO need to swipe the card at the pump in most places.
I signed up for the offer as well and also don't find it on the AMEX site anymore, but I already got a credit for the 1 purchase I made at BP so its legit.
I filled up my first tank on this deal and couldn't be happier. I usually just use Costco gas. I swear that I was able to drive more miles on a tank of BP gas than Costco gas. I don't know if it's just because I'm clouded by the great deal or if this slight gain in mileage is for real (probably the former). Either way, at current prices, it's about 12.5 cents off per gallon in addition to any percentage that you get with your credit card- not too shabby.

Costco/Sam's/Wal-Mart has pretty dirty gas and the results are noticeable when hooked up to EFI Live. BP gas does yield less pinging and better response when being run.
I don't think it has anything to do with being "dirty", whatever that means. Sam's Club, Costco, and WalMart generally use higher-ethanol formulations, which yield lower MPG numbers than low- or no-ethanol blends like BP uses. Of course, the ethanol blends are cheaper, which is why you generally see them at those locations and should take the reduced MPGs you'll get from fuels at those locations into account.
The higher-ethanol blends are actually better for and can produce higher horsepower in cars that need high-octane premiums, such as those with turbocharged or high compression ratio engines, despite the reduced fuel economy.

thx! i noticed that too about costco gas giving less mpg. i thought i was just imaging it
costco $2.48/gal BP $2.63
.15 x 10 gal = $1.15
1.15/2.48 = .46 gal
at 30mpg, .46 gal = 14miles
so if your fuel economy drops more than 14 miles per tank, buy BP. Else buy costco

if you are getting this deal then you BP gas only costs ~2.50/ Gallon.

9% would be soooo sweet
Yeah, I have the biz AMEX, but is it really a better deal than getting gas at Costco (all else equal)?
Example: 10 gallons at Costco at 2.46 a gallon (which was the price today when I went): $24.60. 4% back is .99 making your actual price $23.61. 10 gallons at BP at 2.55 a gallon (price last I checked): $25.50. 9% back is $2.30 making your actual price $23.20.
I guess my point is that considering Costco's already below market price for gas, you aren't really getting the full extent of this additional 5% "rebate". Of course, if you don't have a Costco gas station or one nearby, then I see the appeal. Additionally, the larger your tank or the less the price difference (although I imagine for most people, the difference might be more), the greater the deal is too.
