big question is if you can use that $20 off $50 coupon on another giftcard .. if so you're basically getting $230 GC for $250 .. I guess when you think of it that way, you're saving less then 10% off. Thanks OP.t -- Now if they let you buy GC's with GC's ... which I think they have in the past, then you might be able to rinse and repeat. I think last time you could buy other giftcards with safeway giftcards, but not safeway ones.

There will almost assuredly be activation fees for these gc's that you will be charged for at the register. These are usually from $3-5 dollars so this deal is really not that hot when factoring that in.

Deal is also good at Genuardi's located in the Philadelphia suburbs. The Genuardi's flier in Sunday's Philadelphia Inquirer has two offers. The first is $20 off your next shopping trip of $50 or more when you buy $200 worth of gift cards. That offer is Nov. 27 and 28 only. The second offer is $10 off your next shopping trip of $50 or more when you buy $150 worth of gift cards. That offer is available Nov. 29-Dec. 8.
The coupons must be redeemed within seven days of issuance. safeway gift cards, Ticket cards, Telecom, Reloadable Debit cards and all American Express , MasterCard and Visa Gift cards are not included in the offer.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case these days, but I've bought GC's at safeway in the past with no activation fees.

Hope this helps!
I got this same offer at Dominicks in the Chicago area. Spit out from the catalina coupon dispenser last night.
josh1701 spelled out the fine print. thanks. you cannot use the coupons on gift card purchases. there are no activation fees, except those AMEX, visa or mastercard ones. and safeway giftcards are excluded as well. i always get arco cards.

Well, even with safeway gift cards excluded, this is a good deal - straight 10% off on any giftcards including good ones i.e. Amazon and gas cards. Basically, go buy $200 of cards, get $20 coupon, turn around and buy $200 with the coupon etc... At the end you'd end up with the last $20 coupon to be used on any final $50 purchase. Plus, your credit card rewards, plus United miles from safeway.

The Fine Print: (type this out from the website.. may contain typos/mistakes) Offer valid on in-store purchases. Between 1/27/2009 and 11/28/2009, get $20 off one future shopping trip of $50 of more of grocery products; (certain exclusion apply, see coupon for list of excluded products), when you buy $200 worth of participating gift cards with your Club Card at participating safeway Inc. company stores. Between 1/27/2009 and 11/28/2009, get $10 off one future shopping trip of $50 of more of grocery products; (certain exclusion apply, see coupon for list of excluded products), when you buy $150 worth of participating gift cards with your Club Card at participating safeway Inc. company stores. Limited to one (1) coupon per transaction. $20 and $10 coupons must be redeemed within seven days of date of issuance. See coupon for details and restrictions. Not valid with any other offer or on past purchases. Void where prohibited. Subject to Availability and while supplies last. safeway gift cards, Ticket Cards, Telecom, Reloadable Debit cards and all American Express , MasterCard and Visa Gift cards are not participating cards. All trademark are property of their respective owners. See cards for details, fees, terms and conditions, which may vary.
Just to do the math...
You spend $200 bucks on safeway Giftcards, get $200 safeway Giftcard and $20 off coupon.
Use $180 of the giftcard + the $20 off coupon on another giftcard (anything other than safeway) and get another $20 off coupon. or just use the whole gift card and spend it on something and get another $20 off coupon.
For $200, you get $200 giftcard to store of your choice and $40 dollars for you next $50 purchases..
That's 17% off... $240 for $200.. going to go to safeway and try this later.. Thanks OP

TWAM, green for you, yours is the most optimistic scenario (first buy $200 in safeway cards), hope it works; a good deal either way.
My Local safeway has this posted above all the store giftcards (Sears, Macy's etc..) none of these cards have any activation fees on them.. great for gifts or to use for yourself.. Also don't forget to use a PenFed Visa card (if you have one) and get 5% CashBack!!!

get $20 off one future shopping trip of $50 of more of GROCERY products... good luck trying to buy giftcards using the coupon. buying safewary gc will not count towards the $200 purchase limit.

Thanks for the reminder. Just did it and will use my Discover to buy a few GCs.

taf said: I am going to buy some Amazon cards that I would use anyway. This deal also works at Vons
unless you are buying itunes cards or gas cards, GC are pretty bad deals. you don't get all the benefits of using a credit card including extended warranty etc.

Actually, I've figured the way to use $20 coupons - works as long as you safeway processes giftcards and groceries in the same transaction. 1. Buy $200 in GCs, receive $20 off $50 coupon ($10 starting tomorrow). 2. Buy $200 in GCs, and $20 in groceries, use $20 off and get another coupon ...repeat...coupons now are $10 for $150 GCs Last step: buy $50 GS and $10 in groceries

Can you or anyone confirm that this actually works/worked, or were you just going to try this "in theory?" Does the coupon work if you only buy $20 of groceries as long as total exceeds $50?
Confirm neophyte's idea didn't work (but was worth a try). GC's are ineligible purchase for using the coupon. I bought $150 in GC's + $20 in groceries and tried to use a $10 off $50 purchase coupon (from the deal), and Safways computer didnt deduct anything. So now I have 2 coupons.
My DW tried the same, complained to the manager, got the explanation and $10 in cash as a goodwill gesture.
