Ahem...is there any advantage to the user of either OS on a netbook?
I think XP still has a smaller footprint that Win7. But, it won't be long before XP is no longer supported. If all you do with this is web surf and watch movies, it probably won't matter much - especially in the short run.
Security updates will still be provided for free for Office 2003 and XP Home and Professional until August 4, 2014. After that, the software is retired and users are on their own.
This is per The Register, and Information Week also has the same info.

Unless you want to spend more $$ and get a more powerful machine, xp is really the way to go. This thing would work great to surf the web and do basic stuff. I'm contemplating it to buy as a school computer. It'd be perfect to haul to class.

I just picked one up this morning in Columbus, OH area and I'm typing this reply on it now..
BF and I decided to try a 2 person method - He went to one BB (Tuttle) and I went to Polaris. We were both the only ones waiting at the doors at our prospective locations prior to opening. Polaris had none sitting out and I had to wait for an associate to look them up on the system - they had 26. BF snagged one in an aisle display at Tuttle as soon as they opened (they had at least 10 left on the stack when I checked out around 10am). I left Polaris and bought the one at Tuttle after stopping at Giant Eagle to buy gift cards to get fuelperks. Did not have any luck with the 10% coupons for this weekend but did use fuelperks at Giant Eagle (which is .20 off 30 gallons of gas fill up at Giant Eagle for every $50 spent - equates to 12% savings)

XP will be supported by Microsoft by 2014. I heard that it might be until 2016 cut off date.

This is a good deal ACER (branded Gateway) just have to pay tax instead with Amazon it's not tax though 6 cell instead of 3 cell. So 1.5 hrs compared to 3 hrs with the 6 cell if you measure it correctly in usage for the battery life before you have to recharge it.
was on the checkout screen and canceled when I saw the recycling fee LOL
can wait till i leave CA,

Do you have a link or model number?
Use this link Deal here will show you which models have it for that price. I don't known which battery cell you want to get?
I couldn't find anything under $300 in that link.
You would need to proceed with the order and then use either promotion codes like the one for $20 off or $30 off on the selected netbooks from Acer. You got a lot to choose from so that would bring down some of the prices to below $300 on the $299. Some of these netbooks already have additional promo code that will only appear when you are ready to order like $5 off which happen to me on Saturday.
Example Acer Aspire One this one is $289 + FS with $20 off promo code you can get it for $269 this one has Windows XP there are some with Windows 7 Starter and different battery sizes. I going order for 9 cell battery is only $42.99. If I need it again these extra batteries add more weight to the netbook.

Your Acer appears to be Windows XP and 3-cell battery for $287 (worse deal than the original post). What can you recommend with Windows 7 and 6-cell battery for under $300?

How can you figure worst deal? I didn't want to spend more on 3 cell battery okay for me at $229 yesterday deal. They gave me extra $5 off doing proceed with order so out the door the price was $224. I had just had Amazon call me because of that that $20 promo code off ($25 off) so now it only going to cost me $204. The deal at Target is the same unit for $199.99 plus tax which would cost me around $215-$220 after taxes, but if I was lucky to get one. I didn't have to leave the house to get the one off Amazon. Not a big deal, but I did try to change the order and get the one with Windows 7 Starter 2GB of RAM and a larger battery for $289 off Amazon with all the promo, but the first deal was locked. To me I paid less than I was going for. I can get my hands on Windows 7 Starter from a friend IT tech at BB, if I wanted it but right now I am okay with XP.
If you really want Win 7, I'd say just buy this one and get a cheap student copy of Win7 and install that.

Well you can do more with these netbook, I have 11 year old Tecra 8000 with Windows XP Pro SP3 and OpenOffice on PII 266MHz L2 512KB 256MB of RAM and 40GB 7200rpm HDD that I rebuilt myself since I repair laptops. I use that for monitoring wireless 802.11g/802.11n and testing of software. I'll be using the netbook to do the same plus now I'll be able to surf the net and do much more. I'll have to get USB mini 802.11n for the netbook though it can only do 802.11g, but if I can get the MiniPCI for the Acer which has 802.11g/n and bluetooth wireless would be ideal for me.
Good price on a Windows 7 netbook. I added a link the top post.

$40 with free shipping on Amazon for 2GB for these netbooks. I wasn't sure if the ACER could do the extra 2GB but it can since it the latest model with the Acer hinge with ACER in a green section. RAM
How much of a performance boost do you get with 2GB? Is the CPU powerful enough to take advantage of the extra memory?

You have to take apart a lot to get to the extra memory slot, they don't make it easy on this Acer/Gateway. If you want to run Windows 7 Home Premium with Media Center. Otherwise Windows 7 Starter with 1GB of RAM is plenty, these are not full pledge laptops. Save on some memory usage and run Sun Micro Open Office instead of the full Microsoft Office 2007.

I'm a little confused about memory upgrade on the LT2005u. It comes with 1 gig. The manual on Gateway's website says max is 1.5 gigs. But when I go to Crucial.com it says I can upgrade my memory by purchasing 1 gig ram. Does anyone know what the story is regarding memory upgrade? I'd like the max memory so I can install Vista Ultimate later. Thanks!
EDIT: Oops, I wasn't on the last page of this thread when I posted my question. Now I see others are asking the same. Will read others' replies...

Good idea about Open Office. I think I'll do that... Thanks!
