i have this printer from a similar deal and i'm pretty happy with it. one thing is that the starter toner doesnt last too long. i did read somewhere that the sensor says it's out of toner when it's only about halfway finished. and you can get a lot more from it if you tape over the sensor window or something like that. if anyone has experience with this, please let me know.
just google brother toner and you'll find out what to do. you have to put black tape on one side of the cartridge and it'll fake the printer that the toner is full. some reports claim they've been able to squeeze out many more pages.
i'm in a tough predicament -- a new toner on amaz0n costs $33, and new printer ... $49. i could probably sell the printer for $20 on craigslist. lol.
I would avoid this printer because the cost of the drum cost more than the printer is worth when you need to replace that item. They get you there. What other companies do is include the drum and toner in the same cart, but not Brother they make you spend more.

I mean why not just buy a new printer for $50 rather than buy a new drum and the new printer will come with a new starter toner and a new drum.
Probably not the best choice if you're burning through thousands of pages a week, but for my home use its perfect. We got this on a previous deal and I've been really impressed with how fast it is. Output quality is quite decent, better than I expected. Haven't had it gak on any graphics yet, even though the memory is pretty small. All in all I'm really happy to be free from my ink jet, which seemed to need cleaning and/or alignment and/or new ink everytime I went to print something. Now I just print photos direct to Walgreens or Target or Costco, and print B&W at home. Couldn't be happier for the price.

- buy the printer for $49... spend time and effort selling it on craigslist for $20... end up with a starter toner... and save $4...
OR
- spend the extra frikkin' $4 and get a full-sized toner...

But you can buy a cheap printer and refill the toner yourself at least twice before it needs a drum. Then just throw it out and get a new printer.
I bought a Sharp all in one for $100 (after rebate, reg $229). Refilled the toner 3 times. That makes 4 total toner carts. Then it needed a drum and I got a new printer. I got several years of printing for that $100 plus $39 in refill toner.
The drum would have cost $169.
That is why you see a lot of refurb/clearance printers for sale without toner carts. People buy the refurbs an take the carts out for later use and sell the unused printer.
I needed a new drum for my Brother MFC-7840W so I bought one of these from Amazon last time they were this price. I pulled out the drum/cartridge and gave the printer to Goodwill......Who would buy it?

I picked up the refill kit on eBay. They work great. The printer has been good, some misfeeds from the paper pick up tray, but otherwise an excellent buy.

This design isn't the greatest, but this printer is always on sell. Lexmark, Samsung and HP have the toner/drum in one unit. Sure you can replace the toner dust yourself and get reburb drum to bring cost down.
Do we also need a drum to print with this machine? When we run out of toner, do we have to buy a drum? Can not we just buy another toner? Are there any rebates for this printer?
Jumped on it with the Discover card! This (from another FW thread) was the cheapest item I could find still available. At least I will get $5 mp3 credit when it ships. Awesome.
