the board already come with grapic for low power, and the 8400/ 256 / slightly more power makes it just like a ION plateform for compare at $160

Did The Atom Model Fail?

It certainly didn’t, because you need to also factor cost into the equation: you are looking at a cost difference of at least $80 if you compare an integrated Atom solution with an entry level Core 2 Duo E7000 and a suitable G31 or G33 motherboard. If you are really sure that the desired system will be exclusively used for undemanding applications such as browsing the Web, reading email or doing simple business work, the Atom solution will be fine. It is slower than any other x86 platform—check out our comparison with VIA’s Nano—so be prepared to be patient. But it is also one of the lowest power solutions at the least possible cost, which can be an appealing combination in times of economic pressure, despite some efficiency drawbacks.

The ASUS one says Dual-Core but not the $72 AR Compo Deal on the EliteGroup. Any thought?

Hmm? The Asus is an Atom 330 and the ECS is an Atom 330--hence same processor.

Given last night's deal on the Zotac ION deal, this ASUS deal doesn't look too good given that the Zotac also came w/ onboard WiFi.

Interesting deal, green for ya OP! Considering picking up the ECS combo and selling off the 8400GS for make the board ~$55-$60.
Would go well with my SuperMicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 to make a low power fileserver.

wow this is tempting...

anybody recommend a super cheap case?

I'm thinking of using just the atom board, using an ati hd4350 I have laying around, picking up some cheap ram, old HD - have a perfect home storage center and Netflix player.

What are some good cases for these?

I highly recommend to get the barebone system which provides smaller case as well as notebook type PSU which eats 20-30W totally.

With this MB, regular PSU itself would eats 20W. There is no point to build this system if you can buy used 1st gen Conroe CPU/MB.

I'm in. Should make a good base for a replacement for the aging system my kids are currently using. Thx.

Atom is really meant for vendors to provide low cost net-surfing notebooks that consume low power.
Single core atom 230 cpu is rated as low as half of celeron perf and dual-core atom 330 does not seem to fare much better either.
The bottomline is that if you open a bunch of apps (google maps, flash content/videos) single core atom system can even freeze in windows (linux may be better?).
See tomshardware.com for atom reviews.
You may better to pick up a fry's combo of motherboard with amd sempron or le-1640 or intel celeron for $50 or some other intel dual-core or core2duo combos that regularly come for $100 or less.

Yes but with a decent video card - they can be a great media center device and could also make a budget server/nas. I have a netbook - and I'm quite impressed with it for basic tasks and viewing vidoes. I have done too much HD video but that could be a different story. But if these get any cheaper, there is no point to a WD live or anything like that.

So, Newegg placed my order on hold b/c of a Paypal error. Anyway, I guess I could just cancel this order. Do you think it would be better to just pick up a Fry's deal instead of this (again, this is for a desktop for my kids).

Yes - the Fry's combo of E6300+motherboard for $59 in today's AD will outperform the atom very well - go fot it.

Whoa, thanks for the head's up, heading out to get it now. Anything else I should pick up while I'm there?
