Just wanted to let you guys know that this item qualifies for the $10 off $50 on Amazon.com if you pay with Discover card.

"For a limited time, when you spend $50 or more on select items sold by Amazon.com in Apparel, Electronics, Software, Video Games, and Computers you will get $10 off when you pay with your Discover Card. This item qualifies."

If this is a 2.5" HDD, can I break it and use it as an internal drive for laptop? Any idea?

^no idea how difficult it is to open, but if you can do it, you can use it as a laptop drive.

Also make sure its an SATA or IDE or whatever your laptop is.

No good reviews for Simpletech

Some people say it has a Western Digital drive inside. Others say Hitachi drives. Which is it? If it's Hitachi, then it's definetely not as reliable judging from the former Hitachi Deskstar (aka deathstar) drives.

Deathstar is from over 10 years ago... drop the moniker already

Maybe so but their recent drives aren't as reliable as WDs either so their reputation is still in the red imo.

A year or so ago, they closed out the 250gb drives, I bought 6 of them, the little controller board was terrible in these and likely the reason for bad reviews, I had 2 of them go out and I only use 2 as external drives, and one hasn't been opened yet! I suspect that is the reason for the bad reviews. the drive were 3 WD scorpio(?) drives and 2 Hitachi and one unopened, so they use a mix. All are still working fine.

FWIW - if these are the same cases(and they look like it) they can be open from the side oppisite the security tape and the drive removed. So likely you could keep the case and do a warranty return if the drive failed. it's a press fit, just run your fingernail along the seem.

The 250gb drive were SATA
