Didn't post this case since it was never in stock.

The review for the 1470 is not very good compared to Garmin or tomtom. If you need a basic unit, it will be fine. Otherwise,I will go with either a Garmin or tomtom since they are about the same price with 4.3" screen.

I don't know, 4 out of 5 stars sounds pretty good to me but.. if 4 out of 5 isn't good enough for you (and you dont' want something bigger?) then I guess pass on it. ?

**4.7 screen**

bonkers - Got 1 Thanks

I got one too, THANK YOU!

cost more for Garmin or tomtom at 4.3" for these features, lat alone 4.7". Lane assist, BT, and text to speech, and voice commands Great deal OP! this deal is much hotter than the tomtom XL340S from Target on BF, IMO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the verbiage on the 99 one seems to indicate free traffic updates, is this true? Require different cord?

Edit: NM, cord is separate but was inc. previously on Amazon when unit was significantly more. Can anyone point out the free case, not seeing it, but dont' 4get, $10 off if you decline the Wired subscription!

You can get the Magellan Maestro 4700 right now for only $144.99 on Amazon with their Lighting Deal Promo. Less than an hour remaing. It has Bluetooth capability and voice command (which is practically useless). More importantly it has Predictive Traffic which is similar to the tomtom IQ routes which uses historical traffic data.

List Price: $299.99
Amazon's Price: $179.99 (40% off)
Lightning Deal Discount:-$35.00
Lightning Deal Price: $144.99 (52% off)

The post above mentions that the free case was only good through December 13, 2009.

oh, ty bonkers. think i have cold feet after reading a few of the last comments here:

http://www.gpsmagazine.com/comments/000538.php#comments

1470 requiring a lot reboots and so forth. Also, not sure If I would want to lose custom POIs and/or deal with Magellan Customer Serv as I hear it's pretty lousy. Map visuals don't look as nice as tomtom BUT screen is bigger. Somebody complained about certain cities not having maps and Magellan unable to provide any recourse which is shady.

4700 sounds compelling at ~$140. Anyone care to elaborate on Voice Command... you have to press a button before it activates right? It would suck to be on constantly as I could imagine a lot of false positives in a loud car.

Decisions, decisions.

The rebooting problems I have heard are supposed to be fixed with the latest software.

If you like the tomtom and want a bigger screen look at the tomtom XXL 540S which has a 5" screen. I purchased this on black friday. For the most part its pretty nice, but there are a few things that its lacking so I might be returning it and getting another gps.

The Megallan 4700 Voice Recognition I've read sucks. I think there is a review of it on gpsmagazine site. Its very basic and limited in what you can get it to do with your voice. I don't believe you can even speak street addresses. From all my research the tomtom and Magellan have the worst Voice Recognition. Garmin 855 and 885 has the best Voice Recognition.

I have read alot of issues with the Magellan. Although they do seem to be addressing a lot of issues with recent software updates. The safer bet is definetly Garmin or tomtom though. Although if you read many of the reviews from people you will see that they all have there problems. Some more than others.

Hmmm... interesting. I hear the traffic update sucks too because it's just line by line on your screen. Who has time to read lines of traffic data, unless you're already IN TRAFFIC? hehehe... Is that the same w/ FM Traffic on Garmin bonkers? If so, I feel a whole lot better by passing it up. I guess I figured it would be more integrated and show you on the map itself, indicated by color intensity, and maybe a voice alert or two (e.g. warning: there is a accident at interstate xxx southbound at exit xxx. Expect delays). Thanks bonkers!

Traffic on Garmin or tomtom will reroute you... When you start seeing 'take next exit' even though you know you have to go straight, there's a reason...

On the gpsmagazine site it explains how the Garmin's traffic features works. I honestly haven't researched and compared the various traffic features of the different gps units to see how they notify you on the screen of traffic and which ones are better at that. From what I've read the free ad based traffic offered by Garmin and Magellan is spotty at best. If you really want good traffic info on your gps you have to go with the Clear Channel Traffic Network service which I believe costs around $60/year. Personally, I have no interest in the traffic feature on a gps. If I lived near a major metropolitan city it would be different.

Hmmm... based off what you said rsauver, and what somebody posted on gpsmagazine (near the bottom), this seems to be a major difference between this magellan and tomtom or garmin.

i live near in metro area, but not willing to pay 60/year. If i get traffic, I just want it to be intuitive and not read of the screen as is suggested by Magellan reviewer.

Hmmm... struggling between this Magellan @ 99.99 or the tomtom XL335S that I picked up on BF (but still have as of yet to receive) for $84. I guess I'll just have to see how much I like the tomtom as Amazon won't be so liberal on return and tax at WalMart kills the deal for me.

Between the two of them in terms of routing and if your concerned with traffic at all I would choose the tomtom XL335S, since it has IQ Routes which uses historical traffic data to plan your route. It won't help you if say there is an accident that suddenly happens, but for just normal everyday traffic on roads its a major benefit to have. tomtom has collected speed data on roads based on the time of day and also the day of the week to come up with the best route for you to take. No other gps has this capability. The only other one that uses something similar to this is Magellan on their Maestro 4700. Its called Predictive Traffic. Its pretty new still so its nowhere near as good as tomtom's. Garmin is lagging behind here and still doesn't use any kind of intelligent routing techniques such as this yet, but I'm sure they will soon.

I have two Magellans and love them... particularly the roadmats' which have a higher precision receiver... great for turn points! The search seems better to me with Magellan than Garmin to boot. Wish I would have seen this deal before it expired!
