Yes, it was confirmed verbally by my local REI. But that was one employee. Still, my bets are that it is the super clearance date.

Is this the same thing as a "garage sale" They have those a couple times a year but I never know when. I stumbled in one year and got some unbelievable stuff for great prices.

No, not a garage sale. This would be their Super Clearance sale. All REI clearance items (prices ending in .83) are discounted an additional 50%. Great deals online and B&M. Things sell out quickly.
If you look at the schedule in the OP, there is a used gear sale on Feb. 6-7. That is more like a garage sale. These are low-key events because selection is very limited. Dates may vary from store to store.

and mostly used return items. .83 super clearance is the new stuff, although this year, so far, it's very sparse. Only 8 pages of things on REI.com, and NOTHING at the outlet section yet!

Way better as you can return things which you can't due on garage sale items.

Beware, they have notices at the cash register saying you cannot return items from the super .83 clearance any more!

not a good ! news ~!
wow, that really is a change of policy for REI...agree not great news but i'm still going to shop the sale...starting on feb 12 makes sense to me, they usually have these sales either a week before prez day or the weekend before (which would be either this coming weekend or next as you are suggesting).
but if the sale hasn't started yet why would they have already posted signs on the return policy? unless those signs apply to the used gear sale, not the upcoming .83 cent bonanza.
maybe it's that you can't return .83 stuff you buy now, to get the 50% off DURING the clearance (no return-rebuy). I ALWAYS get more stuff than I need, and return the stuff that doesn't fit, cause I can't get to REI on a Friday morning, and so most of my shopping is done online.
I can't believe they'd change the return policy on .83 stuff, but hey, ya never know...it IS a recession...

Yeah, I just can't imagine that they wouldn't let you return something if it didn't fit or whatever. Their return policy / customer service is just too good otherwise. But, what do I know?
Garage sale items were definitely not returnable to the store. It is quite possible that .83s are the same now.

this is for online items too? I'm in the market for climbing shoes -- if I don't see any that end in ".83" now is it unlikely that they will show up that way starting Feb 12?

I got a bike and a chariot stroller last time for $20 each because they were returns with either a scratch or missing a part. Employees looked upset. Anything with .83 in price gets highly marked down, or goes for $20 tops. Made $250 on that stroller.
REI returns and CS are the very best around - they may not allow you to return/re-buy stuff - like we all did in the past - but I highly doubt they would do a no return policy on the item you got online and it doesn't fit or damaged!
To find the *.83 sale items, just type "83" in the search box. I see hundreds of items on both the main page and the outlet page. The current prices should be cut in half when the sale starts on Friday (or Thursday night).

Very little is marked *.83. Sale does not look promising.
Yes, there appears to be fewer .83 items on REI.COM now than before earlier .83 half-price sales. I believe that REI, like many retailers, has been managing inventory closely so that there isn't as much merchandise that requires Super Clearance pricing to move out the door. That's bad news for us bargain hunting types but, if you like REI in general, it helps assure their ongoing profitability so they can stay in business. Don't despair,if you can visit a B&M REI location, try to get in early on the first day of the sale and look for items marked down to xx.83 pricing. For the last few Super Clearance sales at REI, I believe the best deals on gear and shoes have been at the local stores. (I'm not much of a clothing shopper, so I really can't comment on those items).
My tactic: Visit the local REI store before the sale starts and cruise around, looking for any .83 markdowns and ask the employees if anything else is being marked down for the sale. If there's anything worth the time and money, hit the store on the first day of the sale and with a bit of luck the item(s) is/are still available.
i usually go to the store the first friday after work and there are some things around, but my experience has been that the better selection is online. i've been through the site and there isn't that much for me, but as others have said i think REI has probably been more cautious on inventory levels which is a good thing for this great retailer. i have some things in my cart online and i guess i'll see what is still around when the sale starts.
the only complaint i've ever had with this sale (after all it's really hard to complain about such a great sale) is that the online sale doesn't have a set starting time. last year the sale started randomly in the evening before the official date (thursday evening) and when i got on around midnight some stuff had already sold out. i think the sale gets going when some tech guy pulls the trigger rather than at a set point in time, so it bears checking thursday evening.
REI added some new .83 inventory in the last few days and REI outlet has some stuff now. Might be a good sale if you are looking for ski gear or coats. Other then that, not much of anything worth getting.
Sale is LIVE online. Can't believe it hasn't been posted. Has been live for almost an hour so all the $0.03 PowerBars, etc. are gone, but still lots of good deals to be had. Add items to cart and begin checkout to see price. Some items aren't reflecting the 50% off but most are.
Just in time for Valentine's: Women's Swiss Army Watch Was: $350 Now: $87 Swiss Army Watch
Wow. REI must be doing a pretty good job with inventory mgmt, because that sale sucked compared to past years. And then half the things I wanted disappeared between cart and checkout, but that's to be expected.

Two things:
1 - I received my order in the mail, one item was less than 50% off. I contacted REI, it was a mistake, they credited me the difference. If the item is less than 50% and it was part of the super clearance (.83) then the price was wrong and REI will fix it. If the price is more than 50% off, then that is likely the final price.
2 - Anyone get some of the Mountain Hardwear Mesa pants that were part of the sale and want to trade? I got 34" inseam, size medium, and discovered that I needed 34" inseam, size large.
