Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 for $638.10 after instant BCB This is the best price I have seen for the new Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6.
1. Search bing for "Canon 15-85". 2. Click on the first link that says "Canon 85" eBay ink 3. That should show 10% Bing CB in the top banner on eBay 4. Search for stores "beach camera" 5. Look for Canon 15-85 in their listing. (Price $709.00) 6. Complete the transaction.
The bing CB ($70.90) lands instantly to your paypal account.
With the instant bing CB the effective price of the lens is about $638.10. May be there is 1-2% additional CashBack if you used your credit card as funding source.
this is awfully close (about $250) to the price of the 24-105 f4L from someone unloading a kit lens. if you want a higher quality lens, that doesn't go as wide.

Should get 24-105 F/4. This way after couple of years you can upgrade to 24-70 F/2.8L
the L lens also has IS, and it is a FF lens, in case you ever want (can afford) a FF camera. also, resale value of "L" glass is much higher than that of its younger brother.

Find someone who recently bought a 5D Mk II kit and doesn't need the lens. There were a few deals for the kit @ ~2800ish, so you might be able to get a new 24-105 for around $800 or so.

$638 isn't even that "expensive" for a lens. I'm not necessarily defending this particular deal, but just because you don't have a need for the product doesn't mean others won't.
the 17-55 f2.8 IS imho is worth every penny of the $1k it costs. once you see the IQ of this lens you'll be blown away like I was. it truly is L quality glass. now if only I could figure out a way to *buy* one instead of renting them from time to time... lol
