As far as ATI is concerned, you won't get 256 until you spend $150 more on a 5850.. at least until the 5830 hits the shelves. I haven't been doing any research on Nvidia since they seem to be in hibernation right now.
Newegg has some 5830's but are too expensive @ $250 and up. http://www.Newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%20106793261%201067955389&name=Radeon%20HD%205830

Nice deal. I snagged the sapphire 5770 for about $15 more. I'd jump on this to get a crossfire setup going but the reviews on this are pretty shaky.
I have been running this card since the first time Newegg listed it for $142 two months ago. Head to head it is dead even with a 4890 in 3DMark 05 and 06. It is about 5% faster in Folding At Home. Maybe some games require a larger frame buffer where 256bit would make a difference but I bet in 99% of your games it won't make any difference and a LOT less heat generated and power used. The sources of the questionable reviews probably have questionable competence. Started writing COBOL in 1962.
I agree with nsdp....I think some of the reviews are by not-so-technical users. I personally have a nvidia card and have driver problems sometimes (can't use any recent driver releases for BF2142 in particular). Doesn't mean I blindly bash nvidia for it though.
This is an awesome deal. This is the price point they were targeting when they released these cards, but demand has kept them well above for a while now.
I think more and more people are realizing that the mid range cards are the sweet spot. I used to buy one down from the bleeding edge, but not any more really. The 5770 will be a nice upgrade from my 7900GT.
I'm looking for a card to run three monitors at once for an HTPC/CAD drafting setup. Even though this card is 128bit what specific disadvantages from 256bit cards? A PM would be greatly appreciated.
