ordered one. Thx

BUMP This is replacing my POS Seagate 750gb that failed. Interestingly enough, after multiple failed attempts with just about every data recovery solution on the market, I was able to recover 98% of my files by freezing my HD. Literally, I put the HD in the freezer, with the USB and power cables coming out the door to my laptop. Though it took close to a month, it saved most of my pics!

thanks OP. I have a 1TB WD elements HD and love it. In for 1.

Elements in the title would be nice. thnx OP

Expect a delivery date sometime in September...

is that early or late september, I was thinking of taking a trip then and wanted to make sure I would be home when they did a delivery attempt.

is it dead? I can't get the 10% code to work

edit: opps typo, it worked. thanks op

Thanks-I think.

I really needed this, but am very wary of dealing with a shady retailer like Dell.

In for 1. I ordered one from Dell in November for about the same price and after a month of waiting, Dell ended up pushing the delivery out until early February - so I just canceled it. Delivery date is set as next week - so hopefully that will be true.

Is this the one that has the new 1.5TB EARS drive on the inside?

Bought one and repped OP. Thanks

The drive itself is indeed an EADS, at least with mine.

be careful with this drive: the usb guts themselves emulate a cd on your system -- formatting the drive won't get rid of it. you have to go through some convoluted firmware upgrade and some other minor mayhem to get the drive to disappear. The usb performance is also rather sub-par, taking more than twice as long to move files as my firewire 400 externals.

Also, WD's external cases have also gone really downhill. While appearing sure-footed, they are balanced VERY poorly - one half of the enclosure has the drive, the other has air: if you bump them even a little they will fall over. If they're moving while they fall over, very likely you're looking at an RMA. I ended up dumping the drive out of the case so i could use it as a sata drive, which voided the warranty, an unfortunate thing to do with a 1.5 tb drive. In hindsight I wish i had spent a little more money and bought one with eSATA.

N 4 1! Thanks.

Oh no, the reason I ordered it was that according to an Amazon review I read, this drive (Elements) doesn't have the CD partition like the "My Book" series. Is it not true? I'd want to cancel the order if this has the CD partition.

Funny, on all the mybooks i've seen I've been able to get rid of the cd just by formatting. This is the first one that formatting did nothing.

Still not happy about it.

here is the procedure for getting rid of the emulated CD: paininthearselink

jimates can I see the specifications of this item?

Be aware that this HDD has only 1 year warranty.

I ordered this deal when it was 79.99 on a price mistake 2 months back. It just got shipped 2 weeks ago to me. Be prepared to wait FOREVER to get this.

Good tip. If it does die after one year you might be able to crack it open and get a longer warranty on the bare drive.

Very unlikely the bare drive will be honored for the 3-year warranty. WD is almost certain to have a database that contains the serial numbers of each drive that was sold as an external device. I've done no research on this, so this is just MHO.

Actually, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty certain this is true. WD knows those drives are 1 year...

Best thing to do is get your own external and pop in their internal drives into one. That's what I always do. Most of my drives have 3-yr, some have 5-yr.

i bouught this one when it was $75 in DEC. just as a heads up....mine came in broken. The enclose didnt align up with the ports. you had to push it down just to insert the usb and power cable. i have spent over 6 hours on the phone trying to get a replacement. They will transfer you repeatedly to no end. good luck

First coupon is already dead.

Only 10% off start price of $147.99 at this point.

Mine shipped yesterday, with an expected delivery date of today.

FWIW, I ordered this 2 days ago, and just recieved an email this morning that it shipped, although I haven't gotten shipping information yet.

Seriously... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I've cried about my 500gb WD My Book dying on me for about a year now. Everything, just GONE when the darn thing decided to start clicking instead of working!). Luckily, I came across your suggestion and thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. After a little over a day in the freezer of our mini fridge, I was able to recover EVERYTHING! I had my doubts because my first couple attempts to hook the thing up resulted in either my laptop not being able to even recognize the hard drive or it simply wouldn't spin. Each time, I would unplug the power source, wait a bit, and try it again. Persistence pays off. Again, I can't thank you enough. Nice to know that FW is good for more than great deals!
