anyone know why?
I was able to use the cash balance in my PayPal account without a problem.
Other times, though, a merchant (or PayPal) will balk if you change the shipping address--it raises the suspicion that your account has been hijacked (or left open on a public computer). If this is the case, then I have had to generate another credit card number from Discover, and then the transaction goes through.

would it have anything to do with the fact that I'm using a Canadian paypal account but sending to a US address?

Maybe that's the problem... if you buy really expensive ones you're less likely to leave it at places. You'd attach it to your bag or something.
It's like switching of a golf ball when trying to clear some water... you're setting yourself up to fail. =) Sorry about the golf analogy.
