Toshiba 40GB My Portable Peripherals 1.8-Inch Hi-Speed External USB Hard Drive 29.98 Shipped Expires..at the end of the day of course.
1.8-inch Pocket Hard Drive Compatible with Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS 9.0 and above Plug and Play USB 2.0 Connectivity (cable included) High-Speed Interface Slim and Stylish Design Aluminum Casing
Several 40gb usb drives on eBay in the low $30's and not many others elsewhere, so this does seem like a fairly good deal to me. 40gb is way more than I'll ever need for a light weight, small, portable drive like this, so thanks for the post.
The 1.8" drive inside is by Toshiba...but the brand/warantee etc. is "My Portable Peripherals". It is nice and small, but I am trying to figure out where it would be more useful than a couple of 16gb SD cards.
Not a bad price. I kinda agree with groch. With portable it's better go with Solid state memory. But I prefer a flash drive, plug directly into the usb.
I think ipod mini use CF flashcard which is a lot smaller-people used to salvage the flashcard back when its was expensive ($200) All hard drive ipods use Toshiba hard drive- include 2.5 and 1.8 drives since I can remember. I dont think Apple has ever use different drive manufacture beside Toshiba but I havent keep up with that info since iPhones

I ordered 2. A client needs one for a backup device in this capacity. The other will be (I will attempt to use it) used as a replacement hd in a laptop, which, incidentally, uses the 1.8" hd format drive. If you search for any other 1.8" drives, let's say on Amazon, for ex., they're nowhere near this price for this capacity. Wish me luck getting the case off. Will post back later w/results.

1.8" HDD are generally slower than 2.5". I believe it should be 4200rpm instead of 5400/7200rpm. On other hand you will be limited by USB speed and hardly notice the difference.
Does anybody know what is the size of the enclosure?
PS. Never mind - found it. 96mm x 59mm x 10mm. Credit card is 85mm x 54mm

slower and less reliable than SSD for about the same price, not sure I would go for this for general storagge, only if you need it for a specific application

Can you please post the link for the deal with 32-40Gb SSD/USB Flash Drive for ~30?

Hard to find much of any information on these. I wonder if Toshiba bought out this "My Portable Peripherals" company. The closest thing I can find to reviews are from about a year ago, and it sounds like they could potentially have some durability issues:

I would not be surprised if the item in fact is not manufactured by Toshiba. It could be just Toshiba 1.8" HDD in generic "My Portable Peripherals" enclosure.

I hope that's the case. Either way, it's a very good deal for a portable drive of this capacity, and at 1.8" size, still a "pocket size" like it says. I'm in for one. Thanks OP!

I paid $80 for a 30GB SSD a year ago on CraigsList. Have they come down already?

Your right, not marketed or warranteed by Toshiba.
The 1.8 drives were last made about 2006. If you are familiar with classic iPods, you know that are far more fragile than solid state storage, and because they are 4200 rpm with very small platters, they are slow as well. If you google search "My Personal Peripherals" and Toshiba you will see they were being blown out in huge lots by a Vietnamese auction house. I would bet the warrantee is backed by SaleADAy.
Probably a cute toy, and only $30..but I would not use one for any valuable files that I did not have backed up elsewhere. A pile of 8 gig USB drives would weigh less, be far more rugged, and not cost much more. That explains the huge "discount".

Well, you are right. On other hand 1.8" should not be far less reliable than 2.5" drives. I would not worry a lot as long as hdd itself is not off-lease.
There are 2 problems with 8Gb x 5 usb flash drives. First, if you need to deal with the files > 8gb. Sometimes it's the case for me. Second, I own 4 usb drives in 4-8Gb capacity and either of them are slow in write speed (about 6-10MB/sec). This one should be closer to 20Mb/sec. I bet, there are fast flash drives on the market, but the price would be much higher.
Only good thing about this deal is the pocket size. If you can live with regular 2.5" enclosure, this deal does not make sense at all.

Received my two drives today. Show up in Win7 as VOSHKBA OK4004GAH USB Device. Close to Toshiba but no cigar. Haven't dismantled one yet, though. edit: inside label = Toshiba MK4004GAH/HDD1523 P ZF03 so, looks like Toshiba indeed.
