Didn't this sale start on Monday or Tuesday? You can sign up with Seagate and get advance notice of sale start time, that's how I knew these were on sale earlier this week.

Interestingly, I bought a $40 200GB external Seagate (outlet) drive about a year ago. It died in December 2009, six months after purchase. I had a bunch of photos I'd scanned onto the thing, so instead of sending it back, I disassembled the beast, in the hopes of waking the drive up outside the enclosure.
And what did I find inside? A 200GB IDE drive that was actually manufactured in 2006. Mattlaw is in fact correct. I had always wondered about what had happened to all those IDE drives with the onset of the wide introduction of the SATA drive. What is crazy is that the 5 year warranty applied ... to what would've been an eight year old drive at the end of its life ... if it had lasted that long.
