The back-up is a shotgun rack that slips between the mattress and box springs and places your shotgun right at hand. I've checked out the site before and it was $39.95 the last time I checked, but this month they have it for $25.95 plus S&H. Shipping was $5 to me. I'd have missed the sale price but they were one of the stories on today's Attack Of The Show.
After I said all that, I looked at device...I wouldn't buy it..I wouldn't leave firearm where one would be in front of the muzzle if it can be avoided at all. A scabbard with solid nose might be an option, but horizontal and/or also what general direction it is pointed, can both be problems.

I don't think this is meant to fire from the rack....just to store in the rack for super quick access.

This device is neat but redundant. If you're paranoid enough to need one of these, you probably have a manequin in your bed in place of you and you're sleeping(or waiting) on the closet floor......

Anyone who's ever been murdered by a robber would tell you it isn't that particularly paranoid, if they could of course.
But by the time you do this you may as well have a couple pulleys and string between the door and trigger, that way you don't have to wake up to get them..

The first guy is right. You are suppose to flip the mattress on it's side then pivot the mattress to aim the shotgun. Duh.....
Of course, my annoyingly loud terrier will be barking well before anyone got near my room. I'd have plenty of time to get behind the door with the louisville slugger.

pistol grip pump on my lap at all times ! the real commercial is too funny grandma and grandpa ready to serve justice right from their own beds lol. looks like something thats going to hurt if i get up at 3am to take a leak and forget its there.
i'd rather have the under-bed pivot stand that denzel had in training day under his bed: "where you want it jake? you know i'm sugical with this bitch"
When I first saw this, I thought about making one... having access to metal working tools, I could easily fabricate one of equal quality in less than an hour with about $5 worth of steel. I don't like the fact that with this design the gun would essentially be stored loaded and pointing at anyone walking in front of the bed. I may make one that holds the gun at angle, pointed toward the floor, or possibly for a handgun instead. It would make my wife feel more secure, even though I'm sure the alarm system would alert us to a burglar before they even got in the house and long before they made it to the bedroom. I'm all for defending yourself, and even conceal carry a handgun (legally), but I think many would be better served by concentrating on keeping people out of their bedroom than on what to do when they get there.
It's not a bad product, and green to the OP for a good deal, but it's just easier/cheaper to leave the shotgun under the bed. I saw an item called the Bed Buddy at a gun show 10+ years ago that was meant for handguns. You attached your own holster to it, so it could work with any handgun. The gun points at the floor, so that solves the issue of possibly walking in front of a loaded gun.
Put the shotgun in facing toward the head of the bed, but remain aware of what is on the other side of the wall.
Depending on your load, it would not matter where it was pointing, horizontal or vertical.
Also, don't store it with a round chambered.

I'm imagining the look on the maid's face as she takes the sheets off the bed...
In fact, as an added bonus, this product may help you negotiate a better rate with your maids!
I'm going to have to agree with the comment about the muzzle. Looks like the shotgun will stay in the safe and leave it up to Mr. Kimber and Mr. Wesson for home defense.

That's a good point, but it somewhat negates the purpose by having to turn it around (unless someone is coming in the wall/window behind your headboard) to use it. And by leaving it unchambered, you still have access to the world's best multilingual burglar alarm! Nothing says "Get the F out of my house" like the unmistakable sound of a shotgun being chambered.
I've been considering getting a shotgun for home defense and my holdup is how best to store it in the bedroom so that it is close at hand. Our bedroom is on the ground floor of our small house, so we just don't have a lot of time to get up, go to the closet, dig out the weapon and prepare. I don't think the little missus would approve of this solution at all, though.

The door is on the right side of my bed, shotgun is on the left of the bed away from the door~ either way I have to turn 90*...
But if the foot of your bed faces the wall with the bedroom door, one would have to reach for the shotgun across the body to make storing it this way practical...
If you have no kids in your house, why not just put in a solid door and deadbolt it? So what if someone's in your house if you're safely locked away in the bedroom...let them have your Mother in Law for god's sake.

Right. If you are that worried, you should have a big dog. That dog will give you enough warning to reach your gun--not to mention that they will deter most. That said, a shotgun is the best choice for home defense, and the guy in the video makes a good point about wall penetration.

Store your shotgun the way that police do in their cars - with the slide back so that you can see that the chamber is open. The idea behind this is that it will take you at least 1-2 minutes to get your shotgun out of the safe/cabinet or dig it out of the clutter of your closet. You can have this in hand with a round chambered in 2 seconds.
It's also not long term storage. I'll still keep my shotgun in the safe until bed time. Finally weapons don't go off on their own. If no one has their hands on it it's not going off.
quickNdirty said: Wait... so part of your nightly routine is to pull your shotgun out of the safe when heading to bead? Wow. I don't like to leave loaded weapons laying around when I'm not home so yes I take my handgun and shotgun out of the safe when I get home for the day.

~$30 "The Backup" vs $X,XXXX Steel door with steel reinforcements required (bedroom doorframes aren't build like your front door frame). And if just have a steal/door/frame withouth reinforcing the surrounding area... they dont necessarily have to "open" it, they can just ram something and kick your door down... just depends on how much loot you got inside.
I'd pick the steel door too... if I could afford it.
