Yenni said:Better yet--don't include results for which the key word doesn't appear until line 85. If I'm looking for a child's play gym, bachelor's degree on line should not be the first result.
Second that. However, I'd say the result can still show up, just given less weight. Speaking of that, it seems that all results where the searched for word appears in a title should be ranked above any results where it only shows up in a message body (unless maybe it showed up multiple times in multiple replies for the same thread...this could be tweaked to find a good balance). |

Just to add to the earlier request to add a sort by date, I would suggest an option to sort by "post origination date" not just the "last post date". Thanks!!! |

Allow us to search just topic names and not all words in the topic.
And the best part would be to have split search where we have main component looking at topic name and second component looking inside the topic.
For example. I am looking for Staples deal on certain item.
I am typing "Staples" into main search component, and "item name" or "printer" into the second.
Because topic names are not standadized, there are many people naming thier posts differently but most include store name, however exact item name or code only included in the topic itself, so this way I am able to find what I need easier.
Ofcaurse, be able to list the seach result by date posted. There are no need for me to look at deal which is very old.
Thanks |

My vote is in for sort by date. Sort by original post date is also a plus. |

The ability to search within a topic you are currently browsing Filter search results with rating specification; 'search only good and above' or 'rating higher than x'
Filtering of locked threads. |

1. Leave the search form on the search results page so you can revise your search without clicking back. 2. Using tags with categories that can be set (think flikr) would be great. I have no idea how to search for hard drive, since people may call it hard drive, HD, or leave it out altogether from the title. |

1) Date 2) Narrow search 3) On ratings. Add a button for off topic. That way when you look at a thread, you could still see those rated poor or better, but could exclude off topic. For example, some bank is paying a great 6% interest and then some asks: How is there customer service in the same thread? I would like to review the thread to focus on rates, but exclude questions such as how is customer service if FW readers code it Off Topic. |

Would love to be able to "search within results", too.
Also, when you search for a particular word (or phrase), it's nice to be able to find that word (or phrase) either in a thread topic or in a post within a thread. I think the search engine already does that somewhat. But the results always show links to the entire thread that contains the word (or phrase). It would be better to have the results show direct links to specific posts that contain that word (or phrase), whether the post is a thread topic (which is really just another post anyway) or a post within a thread.
So if I type "cable modem", I might get direct links to:
* A hot deals thread called "Cheap Motorola cable modem" AND
* A post within that thread that contains the phrase "cable modem"
* A post within another hot deals thread that contains the phrase "cable modem"
* And even threads in other forums that contain that phrase, if I select those other other forums in my search criteria.
Etc.
But my results page would show direct links to those specific posts that contain the phrase "cable modem"... not to the entire thread that contains those posts (unless it's in a topic as well, which -should- be part of the results)
Also, "Search within thread" would be great, by word, phrase, or username. |

timecode said:Search within a thread would be GREAT! I second this. I currently cut and paste the javascript code from "text only" and then search and highlight using the Google toolbar. Really messy and very annoying to do. At the very least make "text only" not a new window, or at least a full window. |

How about being able to search threads with the most number of replies?
Not sure if this was requested or is already there. |

search engine does not work well. I was searching a thread "PNY 512MB PC2700 DDR $19.99 or less (possibly FAR) at Staples AR/PM" using a string/word "Infineon" the return didn't cover the thread. I tried lower/upper cases. none could find the thread. When I got the thread, "Infineon" was used in thread! |

Can threads be "tagged" for easier searches? When making a thread the user can sellect the store name and maybe a location (web or B@M). You could go even futher and add choices such as PM or FAR. I know this idea isn't completly about searches but it would make searching easier. |

That's an excellent idea and would give more uniformity to the search process. |

People very often use acronyms in posts such as OD or CC. But it is not possible to use these in all types of searches as they are below the minimum number of letters. A case sensative engine able to handle searches with as few as two letters would help.
Thanx |

1) allow user to choose default sort order (make it an option in user profile). I.e. Sorting by score may be useful, but most of the time I'd like to sort by Originator (i.e. by the post date).
2) allow user to choose weather current rating filter should be applied to the search results by adding a check box next to the title search text box and/or by adding an option to user profile.
3) allow users to save searches so that the most frequently run searches can be saved with some name and then executed with one click.
4) in the Full search allow user to: a) choose sort field before search is performed. b) select # of results per page, may be add option for all if it won't cause too much load for the server
5) link user name to user profile, from user profile there should be links for the following: a) find all posts by user b) find all topics by user |

I second this! The more "tags" you add to the thread the better. Even if OP does not use all tags it would still be helpful.
Useful tags would be: Store Name expiration date for the deal final price rebate amount
This may actually decrease the traffic, because people would be able to skip the threads by just looking at the tags. i.e. instead of topic title: Product 1 $10 AR they would see: Product 1 $10 AR and additional tags: store X, final price $10, rebate amount $100. if they don't like store X or don't want to deal with large rebate amount they will not click the link. |
