We want to bring back the Grocery Coupon forum. We have an idea on what we want to do, but we would like your input on what you would like. Here is what we have so far:

Ok let me see if I can come up with a summary of what has been suggested.

1) Move grocery/Health & Beauty to GC
2) Allow .com deals
3) Make sure there are various ways to shop for what you want
4) Make sure the deal types are useful (FAR, MIR, Weekly Sales, etc.)
5) GC trading
6) Possible “GC expert” to help FW manage GC
7) Define rules (posting, trading, decoding etc.)
8) Possible posting wizard to keep post easy to read/review
9) A auto lock feature for limited time offers/sales topics
10) OMG Grocery coupon database!!!
11) List of popular printable coupon sites

Let me see if I can break down how the forums will work. In classic it will have to be tag based. We can try to work on a system that works, but classic has limited ability. Tags could be used for stores, MIR, FAR, sales, and the like. It won’t be as functional as modern, but tags “should” do what people need. Want to pull up weekly sales, click a weekly sales tag. Need a store… click on that store, and I pull up all threads related to that store. However, you will only be able to pick one tag (filter) at a time.

In modern we can make it so you can find exactly what you want. If we have the following root categories:

Products
Store
Manufacturer
Trading
Discussion

You will be able to shop how you want. If you want to look for deals on produce, its in products. If you want to find topics about a specific store, click on the store you want in the stores list. The same goes for manufacturer, and trading. Trading could have two sub categories “Wants” Haves”.

If we use the tools above, and add the following deal types (see HD categories in modern view) specific to GC.

Weekly Sales
Print out coupon
Print out rebate
Coupons by mail
Rebates by mail
Free after rebate
Free with purchase

Then you would be able to find exactly what you want in a pretty efficient manner. Want to see the weekly sales at publix. Find publix in the stores list, click on it, this will filter out everything but publix deals. Then check the “weekly sales” deal type, and hit “apply filter”, and you get only publix weekly sales.

This would work for just about any combo. The deal list is rough, and we would need to make sure that you grocery people have what you need to do this. ☺

Let me know what you all think!

Mars~

Updated 6/5/08:Today we considered what it will take to be best for our community... which led to great discussion about desire and ability to be best in the world.

We've been looking into coupon buying/selling/trading and tend to agree the service is legit and thus a valid and necessary part of our offering. We'd probably set policies similar to what eBay does.

We've also been researching and debating the coupon de-coding/misrepresentation issue. Doing it is illegal; discussing it is not. We're leaning toward similar guidelines as we use in other forums, which is to allow discussion with acknoledgement of concerns by our members. When alerted by a member, we enter a statement like this under the OP: “Members of our community have questioned the legal or ethical merits of this discussion. While we do not condone any unethical or illegal behavior, we believe discussion and debate helps our community make informed decisions. Please read, comment if you’d like, and proceed with caution.”

We understand our guidelines need to be clearly stated. And we can draw another line as-needed at any time.

Before next meeting, we're putting together coupon database needs along with a project outline for our development team.

Edited 6/11/08: I have asked for dev time on this, and hope to have a "beta" up in a few weeks.

Edited 6/19/08: We hope to have a "under construction" grocery coupon forum (alpha edition) by 6/25/08 (+- 1 day). Please note that it will be rough, and we will work as fast as possible to build features needed to make it a great forum. We hope that you will join us in the construction of your FW GC forum!

Edit 6/25/08:It's up in a VERY rough format....working on features as fast as we can.

Quick Summary is created and edited by users like you... Add FAQ's, Links and other Relevant Information by clicking the edit button in the lower right hand corner of this message.

Coupon No-No's

Decoding:

There has been discussion of the meaning of the codes printed on coupons. A coupon has printed text that describes the agreement between the consumer, the store, and the manufacturer. This text is what creates the agreement; the bar-coded information is a method to expeditiously handle the coupon entry into the store's payment system. The information revealed in the code MAY allow the code to be accepted by the store for a product other than that stated on the coupon, BUT if it does not fall within the stated text of the coupon, the use would be determined to be fraudulent [i.e. illegal]. Decoding is also known as coupon misredemption. Coupon misredemption takes place when a coupon is used other than in connection with the purchase of the product as stated in the PRINTED text. Decoding of coupons is a deliberate misuse and abuse of what the manufacturer intended. With that in mind - any messages that we are made aware of as having the fraudulent intent of misredemption of coupons (as defined by use not within the stated text on the coupon) will be locked and or deleted from the system.

Scanned coupons and coupon image files [i.e. PDF]:

Scanned coupons and saved coupon image files [i.e. PDF] skirt around the manufacturers’ intended limitations on the number of copies that can be legally printed by each consumer. Links determined by the moderator to contain such a coupon or saved coupon image file, or to a coupon or coupon image file that was found to have been possibly modified, will be deleted. Only links that go directly to the manufacturer’s website or known third party distributors such as Coolsavings or Coupons.com are acceptable. Messages that request or offer copies of scanned coupons or non-legit coupon image files will also be deleted.

Since scans of UPC's, receipts, etc are also commonly used fraudulently, please do not offer or ask for them. Thanks!

Thank you for your understanding - we appreciate your participation in the FatWallet Community - we just need to make sure we are the best Community on the web - and opening our users up to fraudulent activity is not in our collective best interest.

TIPS ON SEARCHING(Literally stolen from SUCKISSTAPLES by honeybee829)

1. USE JUST A PORTION OF THE SEARCH WORD.
The FW search function offers more help if you just type the first few LETTERS of the word you want to search...for example, if you want to look for a thread on "coupon clipping services", dont type that whole thing into the search box. Type "clip", so it will pick up threads with clippers, clipping, clips, etc. in the title. You are much more likely to find the thread you want.

2. TRY MULTIPLE SEARCH WORDS
If you are looking for a thread on soda prices, try pop, cola, soda, etc. The search function is only as smart as the person using it.

3. IF SEARCHING USING THE LITTLE BOX DOESNT WORK, GO TO THE SEARCH PAGE
There is a separate search page which lets you perform more detailed searches. you can search active and old threads, threads started by a particular user, etc. I frequently use this function when I remember that a specific member posted some good info but I cant find the thread...

4. TRY SEARCHING THE NET BEFORE POSTING A QUESTION. Doing a Google search will often yield an answer quicker and more accurately than posting a topic on FW and waiting for a reply...often times, when someone posts a question, someone else just googles it and posts the results. Save yourself and others the wasted time and try Google FIRST.

5. READ THE FAQ TOPICS IN THIS FORUM. Many prior threads have been categorized into FAQ threads. Please read through them.

6. READ THE GUIDE TO POSTINGFollowing the simple tips in the Guide to Posting will help ensure that your post contains the information needed for others to best help you.

ie: KC Masterpiece Marinade MIR $3.00 off Chicken or Beef (expires 06/30/04) tear pad offer... or Coupons in CosmoGirl May Issue or JANE makeup

Expiration date terminology
These terms all apply to unopened products.

• Best if used by and use-by date: With emphasis on the best qualifier in this term, it means the product should retain maximum freshness, flavor and texture if used by this date. It is not a purchase-by or safety date. Beyond this date, the product begins to deteriorate, although it may still be edible.

• expiration date: If you haven't used the product by this date, toss it out. Other dating terms are used as a basic guideline, but this one means what it says.

• Sell-by or pull-by date: This date is used by manufacturers to tell grocers when to remove their product from the shelves, but there is generally still some leeway for home usage. For example, milk often has a sell-by date, but the milk will usually still be good for at least a week beyond that date if properly refrigerated.

• Guaranteed fresh: This date is often used for perishable baked goods. Beyond this date, freshness is no longer guaranteed although it may still be edible.

• Pack date: This is the date the item was packed, most-used on canned and boxed goods. It is usually in the form of an encrypted code not easy to decipher. It may be coded by month (M), day (D), and year (Y), such as YYMMDD or MMDDYY. Or it may be coded using Julian (JJJ) numbers, where January 1 would be 001 and December 31 would be 365. In even more convoluted coding, letters A through M (omitting the letter I) are often assigned to the months, with A being January and M being December, plus a numeric day, either preceded or followed by the numeric year.

Drug Expiration Dates
From a post by Gransonec:

Here's the text of an article, from the Harvard School of Medicine's Family Health Guide, citing the same study:

Drug expiration Dates — Do They Mean Anything?

With a splitting headache you reach into your medicine cabinet for some aspirin only to find the stamped expiration date on the bottle has passed — two years ago. So, do you take it or don't you? If you decide to take the aspirin will it be a fatal mistake or will you simply continue to suffer from the headache?

This is a dilemma many people face in some way or another. A column published in Pyschopharmacology Today offers some advice.

It turns out that the expiration date on a drug does stand for something, but probably not what you think it does. Since a law was passed in 1979, drug manufacturers are required to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date at which the manufacturer can still guarantee the full potency and safety of the drug.

Most of what is known about drug expiration dates comes from a study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing its drugs every few years. What they found from the study is 90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date.

So the expiration date doesn't really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective or has become unsafe to use. Medical authorities state expired drugs are safe to take, even those that expired years ago. A rare exception to this may be tetracycline, but the report on this is controversial among researchers. It's true the effectiveness of a drug may decrease over time, but much of the original potency still remains even a decade after the expiration date. Excluding nitroglycerin, insulin, and liquid antibiotics, most medications are as long-lasting as the ones tested by the military. Placing a medication in a cool place, such as a refrigerator, will help a drug remain potent for many years.

Is the expiration date a marketing ploy by drug manufacturers, to keep you restocking your medicine cabinet and their pockets regularly? You can look at it that way. Or you can also look at it this way: The expiration dates are very conservative to ensure you get everything you paid for. And, really, if a drug manufacturer had to do expiration-date testing for longer periods it would slow their ability to bring you new and improved formulations.

The next time you face the drug expiration date dilemma, consider what you've learned here. If the expiration date passed a few years ago and it's important that your drug is absolutely 100% effective, you might want to consider buying a new bottle. And if you have any questions about the safety or effectiveness of any drug, ask your pharmacist. He or she is a great resource when it comes to getting more information about your medication

That comes with the "rule set" we are working on.

Most successful grocery forums categorize by store, not by product. This is because while most coupons are available pretty much everywhere, the stores themselves with their deals are generally highly localized. Categories work well for listing coupons, but generally not for specific deals due to the regional nature of grocery shopping.

While I like the idea of a grocery forum, after the disaster that was the closing of the previous one and subsequent creation of alternate forums that are devoted to groceries in particular, I'm hesitant to think bringing the GC forum back at FW will be a rousing success. Many of the couponing pros have moved on, and i can't see them coming back. Then again, maybe this will allow a new group to step forward.

Since most health and beauty items are purchased at the grocery or drugstores, I really do think they belong in the grocery forum as well.

They will be categorized by store, product, and manufacturer. If you want to find a coupon for cereal, you can. If you want to find coupons for a particular store, you can do that also. If you like certain brands, you can find them via the manufacturer categories.

If we do it right, we think "if we build it, they will come."

alert mods

Mars, at this point HD uses single categories, right? So a thread can be categorized as about "Grocery > Produce > Strawberries" OR "Stores > Kroger", but not "Strawberries" AND "Kroger". That's current value of tagging, in that multiple types of "categories" can be applied. Will something like that be included? Or is the vision more like Stores > Kroger > Produce > Strawberries? (or alternatively Coupons and Deals > Produce > Strawberries > Stores > Kroger") It might make more sense to add multiple categories (an AND system) rather than linear single categorization model.

This might also be a good addition to HD. Or perhaps multicategorization is already built-in and just not obvious to me.

I'm with the rabbit, HBC stuff really needs to go in grocery. Perhaps the free stuff standard of >$10 value can keep deals in HD, but other than that, HBC traditionally is placed in grocery, and for the sake of uniformity should keep itself there. That means placement of Bath and Body Works deals might need to reconsidered, but on the whole, HBC is not a HD when there is a place for grocery.

Nothing at this point is written in stone. We are thinking out loud, and really want make it a forum that you all want, not what we think you should have. Any creative input is welcome.

I don't know if I would care for things to be broken down by grocery aisle (baking, canned goods, etc). In GC we always kept things by the type of deal it was.

We did list Hot Deal Alerts by store.

Most people want all the deals for ABC Grocer in one place, not sift through "baking goods" and then "breakfast". Why would anyone sift through each catergory to see what sale is in a store near them?

Health and Beauty is grocery coupons. My first deal posted in the GC board was for loreal hair dye. At Walgreens you used a store $5 coupon on top of a $5 mfg coupon then sent in for a $10 rebate. Now since you get the $5 mfg coupon in the circular in the Sunday paper, and you get the Walgreens add in the Sunday paper, why on earth would you think these deals would NOT be put on the Grocery Coupon section of this site?

That is where the store category would come in. You could search for coupons just from ABC grocer.

So instead of a grocery isle set up, under coupons and deals you would break it down:

Since we're thinking out loud...

Would there be any value to a more granular categorization of "Free"?

Like, there's Free with coupons, Free after rebate, free after 'rewards bucks', free after you buy two seemingly unrelated products and get a checkout coupon, etc. Speaking of rewards, what about extra rewards opportunities, like when they double your rewards on certain purchases, or give some arbitrary amount for a purchase.

What about a (simple!) complication rating? For instance, I think it's really awesome you could put down like four bucks on some cream cheese then, through ill-conceived checkout coupon programs, you can be placed in an infinite loop of $4.00 worth of free cream cheese for each subsequent turn through the checkout line.

I also think that's considerably more difficult (or time consuming, or requires a bit more chutzpah thank your average 'sale + coupon doubling' offer) and a rating system ("easy, average, difficult") could let the grocery nublets like myself sift through deals which require more finesse or expertise til we're ready to tackle the truly unbelievable stuff.

I love it. That plan is limited only by how long your heart could hold out until your first major coronary episode.

When you say more categorization of "Free", do you mean in a grocery forum, or in free stuff? I'm confuzzled.

I like devilmonkeys idea of a "free" section, I would like to see it include coupons for free product and coupons + other circumstances that make products free. I think the idea of a complication rating is very helpful. Many of the best deals I get with coupons are convoluted at best, but worth the effort for products I use regularly.
