(using IE6)

In both Modern and Classic views, FW is slow to load topic lists, individual topics and reply forms. The hangup seems to be "downloading picture 241.gif at stats.big-boards.com"

Occasionally after picture 241.gif finishes downloading, there's another hangup while "downloading space.gif at fatwallet cachefly.net"

I haven't timed the slowdowns, but they're obivously long enough for me to copy down the description of the hangup.

I can't duplicate that from here, however, I will send a note to the big-boards guys as the last conversation I had with them they assured me that speed would not be an issue any longer (that was months ago however).

I was just about to start a thread "FW is slow again" and link it to this Off-Topic thread when I got the bright idea to search, and lo! and behold!...

Anyway, guys, it's getting slower and slower today (IE 6). Once a page looks like it's loaded (and the lower left says "done") it's still hung up until it refreshes itself (true! no mouse! hands off!) then finally a cursor will appear.

alert mods

Is it still the same "downloading picture 241.gif at stats.big-boards.com" and "downloading space.gif at fatwallet cachefly.net"? If you can pinpoint what is hanging up, we will have a better chance of fixing it.

This is the samething I'm getting this morning but it's gone now. I'll try to gether more info if it happens again.

When this happens, it also affects other instances of IE 6 windows.

I'll try to stare at the left corner to see if it says anything I can catch, instead of the right (where I watch the blue bar), but the hangup seems to be after it says "done."

Edit: So as soon as I post this, it hangs up before "done' and yes, its the "downloading picture 241.gif etc." showing up in the left corner.

Edit #2: This evening, the hangup is "downloading space.gif, etc."

Got a new one tonight -- and this time it never finished downloading, although the screen wasn't frozen: "downloading picture vot_pos_on.png @ s.fatwallet.com"

I dont get the errors ThursdaysChild gets, but I often get very slow response when clicking submit button on reply.php page.. Sometimes, there is no redirection even though my reply has been submitted.. i.e. I hit reply, page is stuck, but If I navigate to the thread again, I see mt post is there. Same thing happens with editing a post.
Dont know if it has to do with FF3.. I'll check Opera to see if it happens there too..

Win XP, Firefox 3

ThursdaysChild: Do you use your own DNS servers, or the servers supplied by whoever hosts your connection to the internet? Could I get you to try using a different DNS service?

Slow DNS resolution will make pages hang badly at times.

I've been experiencing slowdowns, too, but definitely AFTER the page is done loading.

That sounds like an issue on your PC, maybe with AV scanning, or updating cache in the browser.

The test system: Dell Inspiron 9100, Windows XP SP3 w/all patches, IE7 and FF3 installed, !AV !anti-spyware !Windows Defender

If I set "Topics Per Page" and "Messages Per Topic" in my FW account preferences to 100, I do see a half-second to one full second delay in IE7 between the time the "Done" appears in the lower left corner of the browser and the page fully rendering. I do not notice any delay at all if I lower the previously mentioned preferences to 20 or 50.

FF3 shows behavior similar to IE7 with the preferences set to 100, but doesn't take as long as IE7 to render the page. FF3 also tends to render the page all at once on the laptop, vs IE7 rendering part of the page and hanging until the rest of the page renders.

Any AV or other malware scanning that takes place on your system will also add to the page render time, regardless of the browser. Different scanning packages will impact performance in different ways as well. I tested without malware scanning on this laptop so I could see the differences in the browsers, and to reproduce the problem without third-party interference. I wouldn't recommend surfing the 'net without some kind of protection!

The only recommendation I can make for slowness in the browser after you see the "Done" displayed is to lower the number of Topics or Messages to display in your preferences. The default is 20 for both settings, and depending on the software and hardware configuration of your system, you may need to tweak the numbers higher or lower to achieve the performance you desire.

No. This happens on multiple computers, multiple networks, including one computer with a fresh install of WinXP with firewall and AV all disabled. It's an issue I've been discussing with MVP9596 and footn200.

Looks like I hit reply about the same time, please see my post above.

This isn't an issue of rendering (that I can see), it's an issue that IE (6.0) freezes (can't scroll/click/etc) for a several seconds a few moments AFTER the page is done loading (and looks complete on the screen). I've also raised it as issue because it's a new problem (only noticed within the last couple weeks).

I'll have to check with the devs to see if anything changed in scripts in the past couple of weeks. In the meantime, you may want to see if any patches for Windows/IE were applied during the same timeframe and see if any of those had any impact on performance in IE.

If you see "Done" in the browser, and it's hanging, it is a rendering issue. The browser is still processing the data that we sent. Also, please define "a few moments" for me. Is this 1 second? 10 seconds?

Do you have a specific day that this started happening? From all systems at home and on campus?

What do you have defined for the number of Messages and Topics to display per page? Any pages on the FW site in particular that really illustrate the issue you are having (please send links)?

No, I don't have a specific date, so it's hard to check for some of these variables. The time it takes to start the slow has varied, but has ranged from very quick up to a few seconds. Yes, I have experienced this at various locations with various connection speeds. My preference is 20 threads/100 messages. Been that way for many years. Just about any thread does it, though it first really bugged me in this thread (may be a good indication of time frame). I'm not experiencing much of an issue today, but I'm only able to test on one configuration at the moment. I'll confirm later whether it has been magically cured or not.

Slowdown started for me August 11th, as I posted about it in OT. I don't get it as much as I did that day, but it still happens sometimes.
