because it doesn't work. I've flagged TONS of deals as dead, but they never seem to be marked as dead. I think the secret algo is terrible

It's not broken, it's what airtommy has pointed out. Not enough people have voted it dead to reach the threshold for marking it dead. There is no "secret algorithm". The number may need to be adjusted down some, but it's probably better that things aren't flagged as dead too soon.

Secret algo or too high a threshold - either way, people vote, it does nothing, people stop voting, and the cycle gets worse.

I continue to mark deals as dead when necessary. As far as I know the threshold is 10 dead votes before a deal is marked as such.

I think one of the problems is that, in modern view, the "mark as dead" button is hidden in a faintly visible skull & crossbones icon. IMHO there should be a link that says "mark as dead deal" there instead of a cryptic icon.
People stop voting when they get no gratification. They want to see something happen the instant they make the selection. This works for ratings, but not flag as dead deal.

After the magic number of votes, it is submerged, along with the now expired thread!

If I got in on it, I may very well still want to monitor it. Yes, I can subscribed, but sometimes it's easier to watch it on the forums list.

Yeah, but there are those that flag a deal as dead to hoard it for themselves, ordering multiple times to multiple addresses and such . . . making it an 'ignored' topic automatically may squelch that type of behavior.

Making it ignored won't do anything to stop hoarders.

He speaks the truth! If you see a deal flagged as dead, and it is not, send in a mod alert, and the mod can reset the dead count. Mods "can" do anything, and that's fine. But the general operation of FW shouldn't rely on fixes by mods. -cd
As much as I agree with canydavid, I do believe that mods HAVE to get involved in this, especially since some people may be mis-using this functionality to hide the deals from members.
There are times when a user-driven update HAS worked in the past though - quick summary is a perfect example of that.

My point was that the system shouldn't be designed such that they NEED to be involved. I think it's reasonable for FWers to be able to un-dead a thread.
For my own threads, I just set auto-expire so that I don't have to alert the mods. At the time given in auto-expire, it will automatically move to the Expired Deals forum.
For all Woot deals I post, I always set auto-expire to the next day. When it sells out before then, I set the auto-expire to expire early.

Well actually, "Free Stuff" deals don't get moved. I tried alerted the mods on dead "Free Stuff" deals, but they told me to leave it where they are.The could at least mark it dead. -cd
