Of course there's grumbling about our custom view alerts only being available in Modern. Valid. While Classic hot deals posters (and members over all) are in the minority compared to Modern posters/viewers, all our members are important to us and we understand some find Modern unworkable.
Without stressing about "should'ves" (the past), I ask you simply...
What would it take? What is left in Modern that offends you? I know there are specific reasons and I’d like to know if we can come to a solution. I am not promising any magic bullets. I am saying we care about what you want and we'll do what we can to be the very best for you. So...
The whole Modern look is cluttered. There are more screenfuls required for the same number of threads. Also, the color contrast on the Classic is just so much better. I don't know if it's because of my colorblindness, but the links don't color the same way in Modern. I can't tell at a glance, or even after squinting, which ones I've looked at and which ones I haven't. That's how I keep track so I don't waste what little time I have. I click on the most recent posted deal and go down the list until I hit another "visited" link, and that's it. Anything older than that, if I want to keep track, I subscribe. The Modern theme makes that impossible.
I can honestly say I've given it another look (modern vs. classic)
Here is what I find annoying (all cosmetic, not functional):
1. Too much wasted white space on the left and right side borders. Makes the whole page seem "squeezed."
2. The author column is too wide, as in distracting, with there being no valid reason that I can discern.
and my biggest pet peeve,
3. the color scheme of classic doesn't seem to be reproduced in the modern views. I tried all the likely combination of colors - is it something obvious that I'm missing? The current default is, how shall I say it without being offensive - hospital puke color?

For me it is the color scheme, the new version is hard on the eyes. The text vs the background colors. Actually it reminds me of SD.(I know that those initials are a swear word around here but you asked) The old version is just easier on the eyes. If the new version had the same colors and format on the main pages as the old version, with the updates of the new version i would change in a heartbeat.
Hmmm, come to think of it... Some members may not be aware they can hide views (teeny little [x] at top of Views column). Making that more obvious may be part of the solution. And we've established there's a lack of clarity in Modern's text compared to the crisp contrast in Classic... plus the read/unread designation. Points well-taken, and hopefully we can get some changes done based on them.
What else?

I always keep the views tab hidden, and there's no more "wasted space" in modern than there is in classic.
Mouse scrolling is horrible in the modern view. Unresponsive, jerky. Completely unacceptable. Do you have a scroll mouse? Have you compared scrolling in the two views?
I like the features of modern, but there are lots of minor color things that really annoy me and keep me in classic. Here's a few to get you started
The topic page:
Too much color - bright green staff posts, blue for my posts, darker voting buttons, RED ignore button instead of greyscale, bold black lines and color gradients as separators (on topic page, not category)
cluttered/wasted space - do you really need two buttons for quick summary history? and squeezing a 2nd picture next to the avatar for trophies, giant private message buttons
The vertical bar (|) before a message rating is bigger and the rating bar (green) is not centered on it
The forum page
there are fewer topics on the screen at once because they are taller - I don't care to see the category because for most products I know it from the title
the fav/not interested button that shows up/disappears in each topic as I move my mouse down the screen while reading is distracting
Maniac said: Are you familiar with "favorites"? It sounds like what you are looking for.Yes, I am. I am the one who requested favorites. Favorites and "I'm in" are not the same. I use favorites to bookmark useful threads, like the Staples & OD clearance threads, coupon threads, threads that are not deals but contain useful information like the PAP2 thread, so I have maybe twenty favorites that allow me to get to those threads quickly. It also allows me to access my favorites from any PC in the world, since it is not a browser favorite, but a FW favorite.
An "I'm in" button would allow me to to flag all the deals I participate in. I have participated in THOUSANDS of deals. I do not want them cluttering up my 20 or so favorites. This feature would be a search aid. I currently use search to find old deals when I want some info like rebate tracking or info on patches/hacks or other useful information posted by someone while the deal was on, however the search feature searches all posts and gives me way too many results. I do not want deals that I have not participated in to be in the results when I am searching for something specific in an old deal that I have participated in, so by using an "I'm in" filter the results would show me all the posts I have participated in if I use no other search criteria, or if I include keyword(s), then the results would include any deals I have participated that match the keyword(s) or other criteria such as forum, etc.
Hopefully, an "I'm in" button would cut down on people posting useless, cluttering, "I'm in." posts to threads as well.
Then all we need is a "Thanks OP." button to get rid of the other half of the useless, cluttering posts.
Agree on this one, but I'd settle for a way to search for threads which I have given a green rating and use my greens to indicate products I bought- should be easy to implement too.

I do use Modern, thanks to the "X number unread" link, but I wish you would unclutter the upper right corner of the thread page.
The Page number is on top of the "switch to classic" button, and if there are lots of pages the boxes will extend over the "go" button for the topic search.
I've sent you a screenshot before, do you need one again?
Thanks! I've had a bug in about the overlap for quite a while and it keeps floating to the bottom of priorities. Is this limited to IE6? Go ahead and send me another screenshot if you'd like and I'll freshen up the request.
one thing I used to have a problem with was too much fancy graphics that would slow down the page load and my whole computer. I need stuff to work fast, I think that was a MAJOR issue in software engineering, and you must consider the processing power and allow stuff to load FAST, even on older computers. The cosmetic stuff others have mentioned, is also important. Lastly, they should take it easy on the links and auto slide and things that move automatically, good example is how the old MY YAHOO page used to be pretty simple and worked well, and now the new and "improved" one is just horrible, & absolutely crap.
I think darker text would help.I also think the underlined text in the classic is less distracting than the not underlined of the modern. Also, a line between the posts(even on this page you are looking at now) make it easier to separate the posts visually. Gray and lighter gray don't really separate the lines very well. I think a heavy line between the topics might solve the whole thing.

I finally found the little "x" button by views and while that does help in eliminating the wasted space I still think modern view needs more contrast. After a while, the lack of contrast just hurts my eyes. Thank you for your work/help.

The Page number is on top of the "switch to classic" button, and if there are lots of pages the boxes will extend over the "go" button for the topic search... We improved this situation a week or so back, though there may be some browsers/resolutions still showing an overlap. A higher quality fix involved substantive changes to the header so will come a little later. Feel free to PM me any time with specific problems and I'll see that they get attention.
As was said, the text in Classic links seems to be a darker blue and the contrast to the background makes it not only easier to read, but faster too, and time is important. Ease of reading is key. For example, in Modern-styled threads, the left edge of the message box has slightly darker gradient shading ... get rid of it. The more colors/shadings the more distracting and harder to read.
Even the "quote" box in Modern, being a different shade, is also distracting, plus the text is lighter and MUCH HARDER to read. The Classic indent with lines above and below may be plain, but the are perfectly readable and is easier (and faster) to read.
Also, make the space for the avatar/name info narrower like in Classic ... we're here to read the threads, not the left avatar column. Modern style seems more interested in form than function, but your readers are here for function, not form .
Interesting: when in Modern thread, and I switch to "full featured reply" it uses Classic style even though it's in Modern mode.
Make these changes so its more readable, and I'll switch to modern.
