So in this world of smart phones, I suggest that the topic alerts or subscription alerts also include a mobile-friendly link to the thread.

What you all think?

I am definitely for this. They have a mobile friendly website (fatwallet.mobi) and I would think if you go to any of the alert links or the main page, it would know you're on a smartphone and forward you to the mobile domain name.

Currently when I click on alert links, it locks up IE on my smartphone.

This would make a lot of sense. I also wish that, when viewing a mobile thread, internal links were mobile-friendly.
