New Messages icon

I'm still using the old interface and really liken it. My question is how does the 'New Messages' icon work? Seems like every time I refresh the page, the icon shows up next to the category. When I open that category, it has no new messages or topics. Seems like a bug to me.

It does seem buggy as you describe it. So you're sure there are no new replies? Anyway, we have similar functionality on the new design that appears to be working. Let's see if that's the fix; if not we can revisit.
Thanks

No offense, but I do not like the new design. Can the bug be fixed in the old design please?

No offense taken.

I wasn't able to replicate this problem on the old page, though. If there were no new posts since my visit to a forum, there was no 'new' icon. Since posts are streaming in all the time in Hot Deals, it's easier to see in less busy forums. I'm wondering if anyone else is having issues with this so we can pinpoint the problem?

Also, the new design will be the design as soon as we can get solutions in place responding to suggestions made so far (including the Forums main page, FYI).

I see that in the new design you're chaning the icon from blue to gray and vice versa for the new messages. Sorry to tell you, but this functionality is still broken and it has exactly the same bug. So, the bug is not fixed in the new system.

Can this be looked at again in the new design as it doesn't work in the current and in the new one.

The new message icons appear to work for me as long as I remain logged in.
Even on multiple computers, the icons are accurate.

It does not work for me in either. Here's an example: I have a category where there are no messages (0 messages), but the icon still lights up. Examples are here and here.

Dmitriy something else must be going on there. There are a ton of threads in Contests and Sweeps that should be showing up. Out of curiosity, do you see any when you use the Modern view?

I go through all the categories and click on 'not interested' button. For this specific category, I'm not interested in any topics, so the category is empty. Some other categories have only 2-3 topics, and even though they are not updated (and there are no new topics), the new icon is showing up.

I see that the site was changed to the new layout. But again as mentioned before, the new icons are not working properly. I'm willing to help you to fix this.

Thank you
I'll ask someone to be in touch with you personally to help work out a solution.

Just killing time before dinner, but I think I see the problem. Quick glance at the database queries and your screenshots show that we are checking if a new topic has been posted in a particular forum since you've last viewed that forum. However, there is no consideration for ratings of those topics posted since you've seen that particular forum. This points to the icon being correct if you've left the Rating: Poor. You aren't seeing the new posts due to your ratings filters.

Really not sure what you're saying. I got everything up to the 2nd sentence and then you lost me after that. As far as rating, all of my categories are set to 'All Messages'.

Skygeek, is the "new posts" flag set to display when new posts are made in ignored topics? it sounds like that may be the issue for the OP.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. The query simply checks the timestamp of the user's last visit to a forum (like Hot Deals). If there are topics started, or new messages added to existing topics since that timestamp, the icon changes. So, no, it does not take into account ignored topics or if you have your filter setting set differently.

I was referring to your screenshot, specifically looking at the Rated: Normal filter setting that I saw on the right side. That or ignored topics as tlaxson said would throw off the new messages icon.

I agree with tlaxson; seems that's happening. You're asking about 'Rated: Normal filter'. I have this filter set for all categories and I never change them.

Yes, both the ignored topics and your filter set to Rated: Normal instead of Rated: Poor, which is the default will result in the New Messages Icon being incorrect.

Can you elaborate more on this? How does the rating matter what I see on the screen and if I never change the filter for the rating.

Because you've changed the Rated: Poor to Rated: Normal, you will not see some topics that have been rated down. I'm sure you're not changing the filter now, but at some point you did. The default is Rated: Poor.

From the user's perspective changing the the Rating filter should not change the icon inconsistently. So what you're saying is that if I change the filter to the default value of Rate: Poor I will not have that issue? I will try that, but I doubt that will fix an issue. From technical perspective (and me being a technical person) this is a poor implementation of the feature.

It will not fix the issue if you've ignored topics. I was simply telling you how it works. I was not saying it works correctly now. It worked at one point, and was determined by a last visit date. Now we have a much more accurate measure of the last time you've seen a topic in each forum category. The issue is that when ignored topics were implemented, the "New messages icon" was either considered and viewed to be a lower priority at the time, or someone missed it.

So yes, currently, it does not work how you'd expect it to work. I already wrote up a bug regarding this feature.
