This thread is intended for the "me too" rotating 5% rebate game credit card companies now seem to be playing.
for 4th quarter 2010, see the Quick Summary --> next box

Chase and many Citicards have joined DiscoverCard in the revolving 5% rebate game.
The trick will be to be sure to use the right card during the correct rebate period aka time frame.
REMEMBER TO SIGNUP WHEN ALLOWED TO DO SO.
This may require you to log into your account multiple times per year.
Watch out for upper limits. DiscoverCard is famous for them.

Could you please post the link to the Citi rewards promo signup? I am not sure where to check on their web site if my account qualifies. Thanks.

rated:

Citi is in the process of converting certain accounts to either a World MasterCard or a World Elite MasterCard. I have not seen a link yet other than "Simply log onto www.CitiCards.com or telephone 1-800-231-0891 to enroll for each quarterly bonus." taken from the announcement letter.

See this FatWallet thread for more information: Citi Dividend MC are changing to World Elite Mastercards with NO preset limit (and no CL reporting)

one of my chase cards got converted to a chase freedom a while ago, but i've never used it.

1) there's no rewards cap for chase?
2) minimum requirements for redeeming rewards?

rated:

Yes the cap is $800 of spending per quarter, or 3200 bonus points (+ the 800 normal points) for $800 spent..

I wonder if a window store is classified as home improvement, that'd be pretty neat since I just got new windows.

Is Sears a Department Store?

vickh said: Is Sears a Department Store? No telling anymore. Although WalMart is one of the largest sellers of grocery items, according to Discover they are not a grocery store, it is a retail store.

I believe Sears to be classified as a department store.

On the old Chase Freedom program, Sears and Sears Hardware stores both were counted as Department Stores.

Sears.com?

That is a totally different question since it is a dot com. It's a coin toss.

We have a few reports that certain FIA Card Services issued AMEX cards have a 5% rebate (up to $500 spending) ongoing to the end of September on:

  • Drug Stores
  • Gas Stations
  • Grocery Stores
  • Restaurants

It depends if you get the targeted letter or email and sign up for it.

I'm not a fan of rotating 5% rebates. If you're a heavy charger, go with AMEX BLUE CASH for 5% (with no cap) on groceries, drugstores, and fuel year-round after you hit the $6500 tier.

JW - it's kind of hard to read. We don't need to highlight the common categories. I think it'd be better if the cards were highlighted/bolded instead.

Chase Freedom 4th quarter 5% rewards sign up began Sept 16th.
According to one Chase CSR, you can still sign up this quarter and still collect the 5% for the entire 3rd quarter. I think that is remarkable. I suspect YMMV since you cannot sign up for the 3rd quarer on line.

I wasn't sure what you were saying at first, but I think you mean sign up for the 3rd quarter (july-september) bonus today and get the 5% even on previous purchases that were made in july-september before you signed up? That does sound good, and better than most other credit card bonus deals. The terms and conditions seem to agree with that; they say "applies to net purchases made with your credit card during the promotional period"; they don't say anything about it only applying to purchases made after you sign up. Note though that the terms say "you must enroll by 9/14/10" (for the 3rd quarter ending in september), so it seems that you can't wait until the very last minute.

One thing in the terms that bothers me is "Credit card product changes during the promotional period will forfeit this bonus offer." Since Chase has been making many changes to the Freedom cards, there might be a risk of them changing your card near the end of the promo period and saying that you don't get any of the 5% bonus.

rated:

You read me correctly. The last minute signup for the 3rd quarter comment was voluntered by a Chase Freedom CC telephone rep this morning.

Sears.com?

Not sure about Chase but my Sears.com purchase(a freezer) was coded as "Merchandise" by Discover..

Can I convert an existing Chase card to one of these cards? If so, how do you go about it? Do I just call the number on my current Chase CC and tell them I want to change it to one of these cards and then call the number listed in the thread?

Which existing Chase card do you have? A lot of us with the rotating 5% "ultimate" reward cards were forcefully downgraded from the former Chase Freedom (to which some are still grandfathered), which gave 3% on our top 3 out of 15 categories in each given month.

It's the United Miles Plus (where I got 2 free RT tickets earlier this year). I want to convert it to a no-fee card before the year is out, but I've never converted a card before and this 5% Cash Back (especially the 4th quarter categories) look especially good on this card.

rated:

Pick up the telephone and ask.
..... OR apply for a new card. I've seen banners with up to $100.00 sign up bonus for the Freedom cards.
Do what you will with United card as a separart matter if they decline to make the conversion. Doing the conversion will cause you to loose out on the signup bonus which could pay or at least contribute to the membership fee you are trying to avoid.

I have a mnemonic to remember what to charge on my Discover and Citi Cards this quarter:

CD
ER

The four letters are in alphabetical order. C&D are for Citi and Discover, and also for clothing and department stores. The E&R are for electronic and restaurants. That tells me both Citi and Discover are good for clothing and department, while Citi is good for electronic and Discover is good for restaurants.

It looks to me like the information for the Citibank World Mastercard categories in Jan. - March, 2011 are wrong. I've got one of those and inside my account, you go to "Tools & Services" -> "View Special Offers" and it says 5% on health care, drugstores, and fitness purchases. It doesn't say anything about clothing, department stores, or groceries.

Fitness purchases are like gyms, stores like REI or Dick's Sporting Goods don't count is my understanding.

rated:

Citi information now corrected. The incorrect information came from a telephone call to Citi a couple of weeks ago.

I have no clue what constitutes a "Fitness Purchase".

rated:

offer said: Health care, drugstores, and fitness are defined as follows: Health care is defined as merchants that provide examination, diagnosis and treatment of health-related conditions and includes services by licensed physicians or dentists, facilities that aid in diagnosis or treatment, and devices or corrective equipment for such treatment. Drugstores are stand-alone merchants that primarily sell prescription and proprietary drugs and non-prescription medicines. Fitness is defined as merchants that operate sports and recreation facilities requiring membership.

Is there a way to tell if I am already registered for the 1Q2011 Citi categories ? I am not sure if I did so and I do not see the link under Special Offers.

As first two quarters offering is really similar to what Dividend has, I guess next two quarters will be similar too.
