When attempting to link a new external account to my Ally Bank today, I got a "maximum number of external accounts exceeded" message for the first time ever. My primary reason for sticking with Ally, despite terrible customer service, was their fast ACH & the ability to link all of my other accounts. When CashEdge started limiting linked accounts to four a while back, Ally (GMAC) didn't seem to be affected.
I called customer service, and the rep was as surprised as I was - after researching it, she came back and told me there was in fact a limit. She couldn't tell me, however, what the limit was or whether it was a new thing.
I subsequently deleted one account & tried to add again, but got the same message. This seems uncomfortably similar to what happened when CashEdge changed their policy, and I unwittingly unlinked four accounts from my Citibank account before realizing that the limit was well below the number I had "grandfathered" in.
Has anyone else had the same problem / gotten better info from customer support? If the policy has indeed changed, I pretty much have no reason to stick with them anymore. (They previously froze a large amount of my funds for reasons they refused to explain, and left them that way for nearly two weeks. I now use the account only as a "hub", and keep the bulk of my money elsewhere.)

Dont know what the limit is but I could add an a/c after I deleted 2-3 older accounts.

I probably should have given some numbers. I initially had 22 linked accounts, deleted one & still no-go. So the limit (if such there be) is at most 21.
uutxs - how many total did you have when you were finally able to add?
p.s. - I know someone's going to ask, so: yes, I do have that many accounts, and yes, I'm using all of them.

Yes, there is a limit, but we don’t know what it is ?
What is the new limit at Citi? I can delete but not add any more. My old existing ones were grandfathered in.

I have 11 linked accounts currently. I hit the 'Add external account' button, and got the page asking for account number, routing, type. For those of you who got the max accounts message, was it prior to this screen, or after you entered the account info?
If the message popped up immediately when trying to link a new account, then it appears the new limit is >11.
From meeotch: Limit is <22 From uutxs: deleted 2-3, was able to add one, now at 19. Limit >=19.
I'm thinking the new limit is probably 20, given what's been reported so far.

Yes the new limit is 20. Could not add a 21st account.
