By the way, after removing the AU, their AU card will continue to work until it expires, since it has the same number, expiration date and CVV code as the primary card (except for AMEX).

I purchased several thousand dollars in Costco Cash cards when my 5% was still active. I did receive all my rewards, but I'm considering returning the gift cards as a parting f-u to Chase.

If you do this, immediately send a written demand for your credit balance refund as soon as the credit balance shows up

The more people chase refuses to provide a credit balance refund within the required 7 days , the stronger a claim they are willfully violating the law

I am still carrying a very large balance at 0%. I won't need them to issue a credit balance refund.

People like you deserve the letter.

Really? I had no intention of returning the cards until they closed my account for no reason. My account has been past the 5% rewards mark for months, there was no churning going on. I bought all the cards for my own personal use.

But if they want to be a-holes, then I can be an a-hole right back to them. My rational is that I don't want a closed account with a large balance on my credit report - so I better start returning!

What's your ethical rational for this suggested action? Wrong (Chase closing accounts) + Wrong (you committing fraud) = Right?

LOL! Fraud? Thanks for the laugh.

My 6 months is about up. Any recommendations on another card I should migrate over to for everyday purchases?

Well my statement cycle ended earlier this week. I had a rush check and initially it said it would ship out yesterday and I'd receive it tomorrow now it's saying Monday the 7th with an arrival on the 10th, even with rush check option. I am concerned about the shifting dates--is Chase about to take AA on my card?

No, I've always found their check service, rush or standard, incredibly slow. I continue to take statement credits. Less hassle. I accept that my card could be closed at any time.

Yeah well this is my last month and after hearing the horror story of someone on here having their statement credit reversed simultaneously with AA taken on account didn't feel safe this time.

But if they can just arbitrarily change the dates on the check then I guess there's as much risk and I'm out an additional $10.

The shifting dates of Chase sending checks, especially on rush orders, isn't uncommon. The fact that you were able to order rush shipping successfully practically guarantees that your AARP account was fine at the time you requested your rewards redemption. The risk of Chase either pulling back a statement credit or giving you a hard time refunding a credit balance are far, far greater than the chances of Chase attempting to claw back a check which they are in the process of sending you, whether rush or standard delivery.

Has anyone else that's still in the 6 month promo stage on an AARP card been receiving Chase mailers encouraging you to "increase your Cash Back rewards" by adding AUs, etc.?

I've received 2 of these so far. It's pretty absurd since they clearly don't want you to increase your CB based on the stories posted by others here.

Yes, 2-3 mailers about AU's, bill payment, etc.

It's not absurd. It's a trap!

Replacement for the AARP card? http://www.tdbank.com/personalcreditcard/personalcreditcards.htm... it has 5% reward points for the first 6 months. 10,000 points = $100 Amazon gift card at https://easyrewards.tdbank.com/product_info.php?cPath=1295_1297&... and they sell on eBay, plastic jungle, etc for almost face value.

Their site says:

Earn 5x rewards points on eligible purchases including dining, groceries, gas and cable, phone and utility bill payments for 6 months!*

Those are good categories, but it's not 5% on everything.

As someone said, they slip the crappy qualifying categories into the fine print. I get harassed about this card once a week when i go into the branch and I tell them every time they need to be more upfront with these restrictions and I just get a blank stare. I dont even think the tellers trying to sign up people for this card are aware of this.

Hertz had my AARP card on file (hadn't updated my profile after getting shutdown by Chase). Interestingly, the rental charge went through today AND I no longer have a message on www.chase.com about my AARP account being closed. So I decided to charge myself $1.00 through Square to see what would happen... and that charge also went through!

Before anyone gets too excited though, my accumulated 140K+ rewards are still missing with my balance now showing as 0.

Let the speculation begin...

Chase still doesn't know what ITs doing with these accounts and are playing open/close games at their leisure

Keep filing complaints with regulatory agencies guys, even if you dont get a personal result the more people who report they are affected, the better chances of positive results for all of us

My AARP account was reported closed a month or so ago. Just to see where I stood, I applied for another Chase card (Amazon).

I got the message regarding need to do further review, which was expected. A couple days later a Chase rep called me and asked if I'd like to move my available credit from my (closed by Chase) AARP card over to the new Amazon card. I said sure. She said it all went through just fine and I'd be receiving my new card in a couple weeks.

I see the same... I haven't tried putting a charge but it used to show online that the card is closed and now it no longer shows that message.

If a statement cycled while the account was closed, all your points were moved out of your rewards account. But once your next statement cycles with the account open they should be automatically moved back into your rewards account and be available to redeem.

rated:

My account also got magically reopened, I had a new statement cut on the 28th (when it was still reporting closed). Points balance is still 0, and new points reported on statement, but showed them as all "unavailable for redemention".

Just got approved for chase sapphire, even though AARP has a $20K balance and is closed.
Applied for it prior to the 50,000 pt bonus going away. Yeah! Now I have to keep checking
to see if my AARP opens up again and I get my points back for that one. Wouldn't that be something!

BingBlangBlaow said:   Interesting that the Citi 5% TYP thread says DEAD, but this thread does not.

1) Because it looks like the Citi 5% product was only offered for less than a month after it was posted on FW (not enough time for a large number of people to get in trouble)....not to mention Citi already limits churn although not completely...at least on anything "financial" (bank account sign-ups, AMEX/visa/mastercard gift cards) to a cash advance.

2) AARP card was available for over a year with several FW members getter multiple cards over that time. Possibly getting more aggressive and getting a larger rewards balance forfeited at closing. That is why this thread keeps going....

So, do we have any data points to guess what may trigger account reopening?

Have not read this thread for the last thousand posts - decided to read the last page today for fun. Funny seeing this post. I did get my points back by writing the CFO, but I was probably the first one kicked out and several others I tried to help did not have any luck - or if they did, it was not with my strategy.

I wouldn't get too excited: over the weekend Chase had done a large upgrade, and it's been told million times that different Chase's departments operate with no regard to each other or to common sense.

If you put two and two together: they screwed up some updates and reset some online statuses.

How those who see accounts reopened - please test 'em and update, it's fun to watch

johnf585 said:   IIRC, this has been posted elsewhere but thought it was worth posting again here. For those having problems with transaction declines for large purchases due to Chase's anti-fraud system, you can use the following procedure to alert Chase of a large transaction beforehand without speaking to a human.

Call the 800-283-1211 number on the back of the card. After confirming your account info, choose option 4 from the main menu, then option 3, then enter the first three digits of mother's maiden name or account password, then choose option 1, then choose option 2, then enter exact amount of purchase in dollars and cents and you are set. I have used this multiple times for large purchases and submitted the purchase less than 5 minutes after calling the automated system and have had no declines since, seems to work excellently...

FYI, the menu has changed and the first option is now 4 (was 5 when this was posted).
