I made a $12 Amazon Payments <cough> "purchase" <cough> a few days ago w/TY Premier and it seems to have posted as a SALE (there was no cash advance fees). I just did another "larger" one.

When do purchase points get posted? Cap One Venture posts them even before the actual purchase is posted to the account. How does CITI do it?

does anyone know how citi treats AMEX GCs?

Posts when your statement cuts, at least that's how TYP cards do. The Dividend rewards seem to post as purchases post.

Applied yesterday and got the "wait for 30 days notice". Called the automated system today to check on the status, and I was told that I was approved.

For those who have had this card for a while, any tips on maximizing the returns with this card? Or are most people planning to cancel it after the first year?

We applied on line one week ago today and got our e-mail saying we are approved!!!! Ahhhh a little credit card churning feels good. Also applied for the not so exciting Discover Escape card last week and have the card in hand. Let the sign up bonus
spending begin!

I got this one, they called twice and rearranged some credit lines to make it work. I plan to put $2500 on it as fast as possible and then not use it/cancel it soon.

I currently have just a Citi Forward card, therefore, my Thank You account does not usually have the better redemption options. Does anybody know if getting the ThankYou Premier card will give me the better redeption options (such as the recent $50 Amazon GC for 4900 pts)?

Applied on the 8th, got the approval email on the 17th (approved for $20k line).

I got rejected because Experian said I have no revolving credit.

Any idea how I can get this fixed? I have a bunch of cards, but only use 1 or 2 of them monthly. Is it possible none of them are reported to Experian?

I was able to get a free report here, thanks!

Turns out all the major cards I recently use (Schwab 2%, old Shell 5%, Chase Sapphire, Capital One venture, etc) are all not on there. I called again and they said my application is being reviewed again. Does anyone know if there's anyway to get them to approve this?

I got my card yesterday. They said it has the 125$ annual fees. I called customer service. They are going to investigate and get back to me in 5 days.

1. Can somebody please confirm if I can buy WalMart gift cards from this credit card? The reason I am asking is that I see a lot of discussion about Citi card treating lots of things as cash withdrawal, so I wanted to confirm that.

Yup they're available!

Sad. Just got denied, too many recent inquiries. Wouldn't reconsider or reallocate credit. Guess I need to cool off. Have picked up 8 cards in the last 6 months...

i am interested in applying for this card for 50k points, and open a citigold account for 40k points. i read online that some said these points are reported on 1099-misc with really high cash value? or did i misread?

I had that happen, but that was when they had fixed flight redemptions and I had gotten lots of points due to the banking relationship with Citi. If you keep it under $600 in redemptions in a year, then MAYBE it won't trigger a 1099 for the TYN redemption.

Interesting update: Didn't bother with calling; card showed up in the mail on the 20th. Kind of strange, another Citi Thankyou Premiere showed up the next day. Same limit, different account number. Guess I have to get this cleared up.

To those asking how to spend 2500 in 3 months, just setup all of your automatic payments. Between Fios, cellphones, power, water, and food, we easily reach 2500 in 3 months without effort.

It does seem to. I don't have the Forward, but had ~800 points from my checking account. After adding the Premier card, I can now see cheaper GC rates, and also new GCs (including the $50 Amazon for 4900).

This is not a 100% deterministic answer, but it should help:

  1. I'm not aware of a credit card bonus triggering a 1099, regardless of the amount. Perhaps, this is because credit card bonuses go internally as some sort of CashBack (although we may see them as miles or points)
  2. Differently from credit cards, a bank account bonus may go as a gift or interest. The former requires 1099 to be issued if the value is above $600 (and it is the bank that decides what the value is), the later requires 1099 as long as the amount is greater than $10

You will not get a 1099 for the bonus points from this offer, as these are not taxable. If you get bonus points for opening Citigold or any other points from checking account bonuses, you will get a 1099 if you redeem more than $600 worth of rewards, as those are taxable. Regardless of whether or not you receive a 1099 for taxable rewards, you are still legally obligated to pay taxes on the amount, so I don't understand why everyone is so worried about getting a 1099 unless they plan on illegal tax evasion or don't want to go through the hassle of declaring the true value of the rewards if Citi overvalues them (which is a legitimate concern, but only happens in things like plane tickets that have a retail price much higher than a price than anyone will ever really pay).

Has anyone been able to CHANGE PROMOTIONS? I got my card a week ago under the 30,000 point promo and now the 50,000 is live again. Does it pay to bother calling them to ask to switch to the higher promotion?

I was in the same situation and called the 50K offer number to ask. The CSR said they were completely different cards and couldn't be switched. She said why not just apply for the 50K card, and by the end of the phone application I was instantly approved. So now I have both the 30K (5000 spend/no fee) and 50K (2500 spend/125 fee waived) cards.

In my case, and per their website, they are both the same cards, "Thank You Premier." Can't have 2 of the same cards.

30K points $1500 spend 1st yr $125 fee waived
50K points $2500 spend 1st yr $125 fee waived

I applied for this card several months back and quickly met the spending requirement and got my bonus points. In yesterday's mail I received one of those illusive, targeted 100k thank you point pre-approved offers (for $5000 spend in 3 months) for the very same card. Has anyone had any luck churning this card?

It definitely does. I had a Forward, no Amazon GCs available on TY site. I just linked the Premier card and now showing Amazon GCs for 4900 points.

Thanks for this. Now I just have to decide if I want to apply for this card now or wait a few months and hope the offer is still available (or perhaps better?) as I was just approved for my second round with the AARP card.

Has anyone paid just the fees from an award ticket, or a partial fare with the remainder paid by gc, with this card and still received the flight miles?

I'm in the same boat (got the wife an AARP card), but decided to jump on this deal while it lasts. It's a better CashBack % than the AARP card, so I'll just spend the $2500 quick and go back to spending on AARP.

I decided to apply online for the slightly different version of the Citi Preferred Thank You card (letter received by mail). Got an instant approval response of $12K in less than one minute after submission. I can easily charge over $2500 in the next three months, so I can get a big point balance in a short period of time. That will help to get some money back from the big charge amount.

I have been fighting with them by mail and by phone for 2 weeks trying to get them to move me from the 30K deal to 50K deal on the Premier card and they won't even consider it. I applied for my card about 3 days before the 50K offer appeared on their website and received it a couple weeks ago. They won't give an inch.

Had the same issue with Marriott card from Chase. Sent them an email and 20 minutes later got a message saying they will add 20K points.

Thanks OP! Approval was deferred a few days. They called and gave me approval by moving some credit line off my unused Expedia card. Awesome!

ps: I actually called them and suggested this option when I did not get an instant approval. The CSR told me he would add it to my application notes. Not sure if it helped but I would like to think being proactive sure didn't hurt.

Just applied for this card and was instantly approved for a $12k CL.. I already have 2 personal AA CITI (from the 75k AA offer), and a business card as well (also from the 75K AA offer). 225k AA miles and now this.. Thanks CITI!!! TIme to cool off on the inquiries a bit!!!

Is it really worth all that time/effort to you? You win some, you lose some...

(and in this case, 'losing' still means $300 free)

Time & effort? It takes 30 seconds to send them an email. Best case I make $200 more, worse case I don't. I did give up though because they aren't budging.

I had a Chase Continental that I canceled last June b4 they hit me with the annual fee. If I was to apply for this Citi card and the Chase Marriott at the same time, would I trigger a red flag and get nothing instead? Credit is in the upper 700s

nothing here

I signed up for the 50,000 reward points deal and was approved. I have my approval letter and the card came today but there is no mention of the 50,000 points in the literature/paperwork. Should there be something in writing or do they just award me the points when I spend $2,500 in 3 months?

They just award you the points. Signup bonuses are almost never referenced in the accompanying paperwork. As the great George Michael once said: "You gotta have faith"
