Yes, if you look at the terms, they say they'll give you a $25 card for redemptions of $100 or more, so if you do $200 at one shot, you'll only get $25. That's why I'm only doing $100 at a time and waiting til I receive the $25 card before I do the next batch. It's taking a while though... for those who've gotten a $25 card, how long did it take?

For me, it took at least 4 weeks before I received $25 card.

Just another data point, it took me almost exactly 6 weeks for me to get my card.

And in response to my earlier question, each $25 redemption comes as a separate card.

I can't say for certain on the Cash+ card, but I can tell you from past experience with other cards (e.g. Chase Freedom, Discover) that anything called Sears has always counted as department store. That includes Sears Outlet, Sears Hardware, Sears home appliance service, Sears parts...

Did anyone manage to do that? Thanks.

You know, I was looking a this card as a nice long-term stable card that would give me almost 7% on two categories, almost 3% on pharmacy and almost 2% as my everything-else card. People like you are going to screw it up for me.

More importantly, why would you expect Sallie Mae to post as any of the bonus categories? From the Quick Summary, "Bill pay" only includes phone, internet, cable/satellite TV, utilities, and insurance.

OK, just got my first bill with restaurants and billpay as categories. Some interesting results:

1. I couldn't find it mentioned explicitly in this thread, but if you log into the USBank website and download your transactions into Excel, the MCC is included as the last item in the MEMO field. Have I mentioned how much I love this card?
2. As expected, only bill payments in the specific categories noted (phone, internet, cable/satellite TV, utilities and insurance) qualified. Monthly HVAC maintenance didn't qualify. Monthly automatic charitable contribution didn't qualify (will move that one to my USBank Travel card for 3%).
3. The Restaurants category is very narrowly defined. Seems to only cover MCC 5812. In general terms, sit-down restaurants where you're waited on count, other formats don't. So I wasn't too surprised that the local takeout pizza place franchise (Tortorice's) didn't qualify, as its MCC was 5814, though I notice that other Tortorice's list as 5812 on the Visa Supplier Locator. Monica's, a local Mexican place with waitresses that take your order and bring it to your table, was 5814 so didn't qualify. Pita Pita, a similarly classed Mediterranean restaurant, where you go up front and order, was classified as 5812 so did qualify. So it's a bit of hit and miss. The Visa Supplier Locator can help, but I often have trouble finding specific merchants. My luck is maybe 60% with that tool.

Ah yes, good question. No, there's no way (AFAIK) to pay ComEd by CC without the $3.50 fee. I'm figuring I'm getting 6.56% on this card, so as long as my ComEd bill is more than $53.35, I'm coming out ahead. For better or worse, for us our bill is always over $53.35. There's also the option of guessing how much next month's bill will be and paying a month ahead, so being able to skip payments to avoid the $3.50. But that sounds like too much work. As long as I can come out ahead each month, even if only by pennies, I'll just keep paying my bill monthly via USBank CC.

AT&T landline + DSL. Verizon Wireless. Each set up as an automatic payment from the vendor's website.

AFAIK, any wired or wireless telephone bill qualifies.

The Cash+ has a "charity" category. I haven't tried it, but it might work for you.

Theoretically, if the donations are big enough and you've got it well enough planned, you could pick the charity category for just one quarter, make your donations for the year, then change it back to some other category for the other 9 months a year.

Good point. I just may try that some quarter, particularly if other categories (Dining, Hotels, Car Rental, etc.) are covered by other category cards (Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend, Discover, etc.). I have a spreadsheet I use to pick the categories. I have a row for each of the USBank category choices and have a column for how much I expect to spend on that category over the quarter and another for the best % I'd otherwise be getting on that category. Another column calculates the difference between what I'd be getting on the Cash+ (6.56%) and what I'd get on the other card. Whichever two categories have the highest in the difference column are the two I'll pick for the Cash+. I'll add a slight bias to the Bill Payment category to account for the pain of switching all of the automatic payments. But honestly, I don't expect that one to ever not be on my list. But the other category is wide open, and some quarter, Charity could make it. Particularly after next August and I cancel the FlexPerks Travel card and no longer get 3.25% on charity. Again, unless some other card picks Charity as a 5% category (like the Freedom did Q4 last year). That made it easier for 'catch-up' and special contributions, which I often do at year-end. For the most part, though, I think my recipients prefer a consistent stream of contributions throughout the year. I'm willing to forego a bit of CashBack to give them that.

Do you think trash collection would be considered as billpay "utility"? Some municipalities lump trash collection with water, and other services. I just received the card. Are the categories fairly stable from quarter to quarter? For instance has billpay always been a 5% category or do groceries ever get rotated into the 5% category?

rated:
Each utility payment is different - the only way to know for sure is to charge it (maybe a small test payment), and see if it categorizes it as a bill payment. If you can determine the MCC they use to charge the card, you can see if it matches one of the bill pay MCCs (from this post).

To answer your other question, all of the category selections have remained constant since the card was released.

For those that have the Cash+ card and an associated Gold or Platinum Checking package with USBank, how does the monthly bonus (25% and 50%) get added? I understand that is it only a bonus for the base 1% Cash Back, but how is it added to your account? Will you only get the bonus if you redeem the CashBack into your checking account (like how the BofA BankAmericard 1-2-3 works)? Or do you get it automatically added to you rewards total in your credit card account?

It shows up as an additional entry in the Rewards History section. For example, I made a $10.00 purchase at Subway recently, with the 5% fast food category selected, and a platinum checking account. Here is how it appears in the Rewards History:

Description | Transaction Amount | Rewards Pending
SUBWAY 00060541 PHILADELPHIA PA | $10.00 | $0.10
US Bank Platinum Package Bonus | $10.00 | $0.05
5% / 2% CASH+ CATEGORY | $10.00 | $0.40

Hope that helps!

ryangoldstein said:   vagrants said:   Things are getting all mixed up here. The original is saying having a checking account with min of $25k...the platinum package...you get 0.5%. If one lower, I think 0.25%...the one with $2.5k min requirement.
Yeah, it's kind of confusing...

  1. Cash+: 1% / 2% / 5%
  2. Cash+ and Gold Checking: 1.25% / 2.25% / 5.25%
  3. Cash+ and Platinum Checking: 1.5% / 2.5% / 5.5%

Then separately from that, you earn 25% on the total accumulated rewards if you wait to accrue $100, via the bonus $25 gift card.

So, following the three possibilities above, these are the effective rewards if redeemed at $100 (each percentage above multiplied by 1.25):

  1. Cash+ and redeem at $100: 1.25% / 2.5% / 6.25%
  2. Cash+ and Gold Checking and redeem at $100: 1.5265% / 2.8125% / 6.5625%
  3. Cash+ and Platinum Checking and redeem at $100: 1.875% / 3.125% / 6.875%

Thank you for your above reply.

I doubt anyone would take the chance on throwing away the $25. The terms say 'when you redeem $100 or more', not 'for each $100'. $200 is more than $100
