Just wanted to share my good luck with co-FWers in getting Geico to lower my car insurance to almost half. I (and my spouse) have perfect record for last 5 years (touch-wood) and is Geico customer for many years now. last week, I got renewal quote for insurance from Geico for 2 cars & 2 drivers on this policy. It has increased by 7% over last year to $535 for 6 months policy and have been for last 2-3 years. I decided to just call Geico and inquire why the rate is going up. The agent immediately informed me that there is new rating system for AZ (i dont know about other states) and connected me to the licensed insurance agent. This licensed insurance agent put me on hold for 5-10mins and came back with new quote for $295 for same coverage. That is savings of $240 for 6-months or reduction of 45% on current rate.
my friend (again in AZ) who also had the Geico car insurance was able to reduced his insurance from $505 to $289. Call Geico and get their new rates for AZ drivers.

This is why sometimes government regulation is a good thing. Companies jack up their rates as much as they think they can get away with. The 10% that notice and complain get their prices knocked back down to a reasonable level. The other 90% get to help make the Warren Buffets of the world a little richer.

Interesting find. I looked into Geico when I was shopping for car insurance several months back. In my case Amica ended up being just about half what Geico wanted, even with a higher liability limit. They also get top ratings by JD Power & Consumer Reports. I heard about them from digging through the FW archives on car insurance posts.

What did you tell them to get the reduction? Do you mind share the story? Thanks
Odd for that large of a drop. I wonder what prompted the changes in AZ ?

Glad I saw this topic. I just got off the phone and the representative did tell me they are restructuring their rating system for AZ, but the people who do that are not in this late. She took my info and they are going to call me in the morning. Money is tight right now, so a big thank you for the heads-up OP. BIG GREEN
For anyone wondering what to say, I just said "My co-worker who has been with Geico for a few years said you guys were changing your rating system for AZ and his rates went down a few hundred dollars." She knew exactly what I was talking about.

I just said that I am looking to review my policy because I hard from a friend that Arizona is restructuring their policy system. After a 10 min review with a licensed AZ insurance agent my premium dropped by nearly 47%

Dang. That's a really big price difference. I wonder if all AZ policy holders will eventually get switched over to the new rates or if you HAVE to call in.
Don't forget to see if you qualify for any other discounts. My college alumni association gets me 10%+ off which is almost $60 for me. My pre-discount premium is $585 then it goes down to $440 after the alumni discount, 5yr good driver discount, multi policy discount, ABS/anti-theft/airbags etc.
I've been pretty happy with Geico. Already had two claims (not at fault) which were handled great and the rates are good. My liability and prop damage coverages are maxed out and I have low deductibles, so $440 is a bargain compared to other companies I got a quote from.

I doubt if regulations changed. I shopped around, found a lower rate and called up Gekko. The rate drops to almost half. Maryland. Cursing myself for not doing so earlier. Same with home ins. Shop around, call, call and call!!

The way this works is sometimes companies open new underwriting companies in a state to introduce a new program. You'll notice names on your policy like Geico Indmenity or Geico Fire & Casualty. If an insurer only has one underwriting company operating in a state, then usually when they change rates, all customers are subject to that rate change. However, when they introduce a NEW program in a NEW underwriting company, customers in the "old" underwriting company keep their current rates, while new business customers receive the new rates. What happened when you called is that they were able to move you to the new underwriting company and apply a different rate structure, saving you money.
This isn't cheating on the part of the insurer, because while the OP was able to save in this case, there were likely many customers in his underwriting company that would have received a rate increase if they had been moved to the new program.

Do you know if it FL is in the list. I have Geico and they have been increasing my premium by 5-7% every year saying FL has had more frauds and this is to cover for that. Didn't agree but what can you do when they are still the cheapest compared to others with great coverage.

We'll be beachfront property soon!
Edit: On a more serious note...I did the quote online and only got about $50 difference than what I have with Flo. I'll wait for a call, I'm sure they will call to followup and see if they can go any lower.

Probably because all the people in Arizona think there is going to be no more non-white people there soon. No more non-whites? No more accidents!
Purely speculating how people think in Arizona.

You wouldn't believe how prices can vary from one zip code to the next, you can pay a lot just by where you live and half as much 5 miles away.Something to factor in if your looking to move too.
In AZ progressive was dirt cheap for me. I switched from Geico was paying about 720 6months full coverage, went down to 450 6 months with much higher liabilities.

How is penfed related? I'm in AZ with Geico and penfed car loan. On my phone so can't search well.

Penfed is a "partner organization" that if you are a member you get an additional discount, like certain Alumni Associations or Professional associations. Thanks OP looks like I might save ~$236 every six months.

The Penfed, alumni association, fraternity discount is the same regardless of which one you put down, right?
I just switched to Geico from Wawanessa last month, they had the best rate by far than all of the others in CA for me. If you combine Umbrella it's super cheap.

I forgot I was able to do this also. After reading this thread, I looked on my Policy Declarations and noticed a blurb buried in the "Important Policy Information" box at the bottom,
"We have a new rating program available. If you are interested in learning more inquire at (xxx) xxx-xxxx".
I had to leave a message, but they eventually returned my call and saved $370 per year off already low rates.
