Hi,

Two days ago, on 8/8/12, my computer was utterly screwed up by a MoneyPak trojan horse scam regarding illegal downloading or watching of media. my computer was totally unusable. I couldn't even surf the Web to learn if it was genuine until I formatted the computer. The warnings were so dire, realistic, and urgent. For example, it read that within 72 hours, if I didnt pay the $200 fine and a $4.95 service fee, I'd be charged formally for downloading media illegally. i freaked out. it was 11pm and i had to work long days the next day so i feared my time would run out fast.

so, yesterday morning, i went to 7/11 and bought a $204.95 card using cash. i didnt pay any of that card amount to the scammer.

since then, ive tried returning my card at 7/11 but they refused it because of store policy.

i already called moneypak number at the bottom of my 7/11 receipt 3 times. each time a different person picked up, but they all assured me id get a refund check in the full amount within 9-12 busines days after 8/9/12. i researched online later and many (not all) people have trouble getting their refunds.

what if anything should I do now to make sure Ill get my entire amount $204.95 back in the form of a refund check?

Please share any ideas or recommendations you may have.

thanks

I'm not sure, but I think this would probably be better served in the money forum. This isn't a tech question at all. You purchased a MoneyPak prepaid card and want a refund, right?

The fact that your PC was infected and you went a bit overboard because you got scared (exactly what the infection is intended to do) doesn't really have anything to do with this.

Their web site does say they will refund your money. There is even a form to fill out.

Did you actually turn the moneypack money over to the virus people?

Thanks for the reply! How can I move this thread to the money forum?

Yes, I want a refund of my MoneyPak prepaid card.

I cant fill out the online form to request a money refund because I already requested it via phone. the 3rd customer service representative over the phone at moneypak who serviced me was liz in the philipines. she said she processed the full amount of the refund - 204.95. at first she thought i had purchased the card after the 15th of the month following my purchase so she initially said she could only refund me $200. but, then she corrected herself after I repeated that I just bought the card. $4.95 is deducted from the card balance every month for inactivity.

Although the company seems legit from their site, I googled the company and some people havent gotten their refunds so I am concerned.

No, I didn't. Fortunately, I asked friends who told me it was a virus. So, the virus people didn't get any of my money. 7/11 did.

I already scrtached off the moneypak number scratchoff stripe because moneypak requested it to process my refund over the phone.

Is check the ONLY way moneypak can refund me?

thanks in advance.

the moneypak card is still with me. the number is already scratched off and Im assuming moneypak was for real when they said theyll refund me the entire amount. Im assuming I shouldnt need to try to return it to 7/11 anymore, right? Should I keep the card until i receive the refund check? after I receive the check, I may throw the card away right? I hate having garbage in my house and mementos of past dire experiences.

You can just buy an Amazon gift card with your moneypak and be done with it

https://www.moneypak.com/Partner/Payment.aspx/AmazonGiftCard

isnt it too late to buy an Amazon gift card? I already asked the csr on the phone for a refund and i hope they will really send me a check. Ive received some horror stories online though about moneypak being shady about giving refunds. Also, if its not too late, would I be able to use my entire amount $204.95, or just $200 (the amount minus the service fee), towards an Amazon gift card?

On the moneypak website, I checked my latest refund status. It still says,
"MoneyPak Refund Status
This MoneyPak was refunded on 08/09/2012 in the amount of $200.00. Please allow 7-10 days for your refund check to arrive in the mail. Thank you for your interest in Green Dot."

Should I just be patient for the check. If not, what should I do now? and, why doens't it say $204.95 online? The csr told me the answer on the phone but I couldnt hear her very well.

i did ask the nice csr on the phone 2* or 3* who told me 2* or 3* that i would get back my entire amount via check. I was so uptight.

If they just refund $200, consider the $4.95 fee a tax you pay for being so foolish in the first place. It could have been much worse. At least you came to your senses in time not to lose the entire $200.

OP:

Per the moneypak website: https://www.moneypak.com/AboutMoneyPak.aspx

It costs $4.95 to purchase the MoneyPak itself.

It looks like you already have a refund of the cash amount you put into the MoneyPak, which was $200. Done deal. You lost $4.95 buying the MoneyPak itself. I'm pretty sure you can't get that $4.95 back. Just be careful next time.

Meee-oooooooooooooooooooooow!

Not sure if you already did>> but you can check refund status online here: https://www.moneypak.com/RefundStatusInquiry.aspx

I'd say it pays to be more aware of what's going on in the world.

I got hit with this virus as well. There are different versions - some of them mention downloading child pornography, some mention downloading music or other media illegally, and some of them (IIRC) mention that your IP is suspected of being involved in email fraud or some such. Anyway, it is kind of a scary page, but with all due respect to the OP, it's pretty obvious that it's a scam, since I'm pretty sure the FBI doesn't exclusively accept MoneyPak cards for fines.

I had to do a hard shutdown of my PC and do a comprehensive scan with Malwarebytes and anti-virus to remove it all in safe mode.

Having a good, up-to-date antivirus suite on your computer is probably the most important thing you can do to protect your finances.

Honestly, no idea. I use AVG free and Malwarebytes Pro. I wasn't on any "less than reputable" sites at the time, but I don't know if it hits immediately or if it is on some delay.

Let me sum this up for you.... You purchased a moneypak for $200 value and paid a $4.95 service charge. You decided you wanted a refund, the company had no problem with that request (Obviously the $4.95 charge is non-refundable, who would expect it to be?) and the website shows the refund was processed and will take 7-10 days for delivery. It has not been 7-10 days but you get on a forum wanting to know what you can do besides wait for your check?

What kind of answer were you looking for? Drive to their corporate offices and throw a fit in the lobby?

I see this type of virus a lot, always with people who let their children use the PC. So it's more important to let your kids know not to panic when they see the fake warning, otherwise they might just take your gold watch and pawn it.

I wonder if the OP is a Bestbuy Geeksquad member by his name and know how.

How is MoneyPak used anyway? You could've used the $200 card like normal (transfer to Paypal and withdraw, etc) rather than try to get a refund.

Yeah I don't get why op just didn't spend the moneypak on gas and groceries etc

so MoneyPak will refund the balance of the moneypak in the form of a check? I see an opportunity if you can get rewards greater than $5 out of 200 (2.5%)

Problem is to find a store that lets me buy it with CC

I fell like I got utterly screwed up by wasting 5 minutes reading this thread.

I just received my $204.95 moneypak check from green dot. Then, I went into my local Chase bank, asked the teller and the customer solutions associate who was sitting in a cubicle if I may cash it there, and they said fine. So, I cashed it there. Is this nightmarish case now over? After I returned home, my friends said afterwards that my check would bounce since it is not supposed to be cashed at a bank. I have no WalMart nearby.

on the check it says "You can cash this check at your locakl WalMart store, Check cashing fees do apply. Thank you for your interest in our card"

SO, did I or didnt I make a mistake by cashing the check at the bank?

Im so confused.

thanks in advance.

i dont drive so i dont need gas. also, i dont buy groceries myself. besides only some stores accept moneypak.

Tell me that this is all a big joke, on us

I'm being 100% dead honest. Call me dumb or whatever but I really need help. I was dumb enough to fall for the scam and now I know better. that moneypak virus looked real and was really scary. I was running microsoft security essentials latest versions and using windows 7 home premium sp1 so I thought I was secure.

So, was cashing my Moneypak refund check in my Chase checking account a smart or dumb move? I have chase checking and savings accounts but no WalMart nearby to cash the check.

Once you give me the answer, I will no longer "joke" anymore.

Honestly, I'm just so confused. Im for real.

P.S.: Stephanie and John at my NY chase bank told me that it was OK to cash it there. But, my friends said later that they didnt know what they were doing and it was like 7PM and they wanted to rush home and werent even paying attention. What is going on? Do I need to worry about bounced checks or fees/fines?
Thanks very much!

This is a funny story!!

I didnt intend to entertain people. whatever. Please help me. Ive been losing sleep night and day and been so uptight about this issue.

Was it smart or dumb for me to cash the check in my chase checking account? My inner gut feeling is its all good.

but i need an authority on this matter or someone who can shed some light on this issue.

thanks in advance!

As soon as the check clears, you should go to your bank, withdraw the funds, and close the account; clearly you are no position to own a bank account.

Im not kidding at all.

my check said

"green dot
po box 1187
monrovia, ca 91017

invoice, date 8.10.12, voucher, comment - visa refund, amount - 204.95 [woohoo my entire amount, thanks you, the lord]

you can cash the check at your local WalMart store. check cashing fees apply. thanks for your interest in our card."

i removed the senstive data.

will I be penalized for cashing the check in my chase checking account?

It's a real check, you were fine to deposit it at your bank, it won't bounce, your friends are idiots.

Thank you so much! I can sleep easy tonight.

I guess being in the chase checing account now is about as good as me having it as cash now. it is earning me a bit of interest now right? i think thats what the chase personal banker told me when he came out from the cubicle to help me. but its not right there with me until I withdraw the money.

Should I have deposited my check into my chase checking OR chase savings account? Which one pays the higher interest rate?

The money is yours, all good. Now that we've got settled, your mind is at ease, let me tell you about my uncle.

He works for the government in Nigeria investigating scammers and he tells me about how he's always uncovering their hidden bank accounts with hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Apparently there is some obscure law that allows anyone to receive the funds from such an account for a processing fee of only $204.95. And since you happen to have just the right amount, I can get you in contact with him if you're interested, just let me know.
