Dealer let me charge $5000 on my Discover card, saying that was the highest allowed by the dealership. I now know the truth that the dealer can allow whatever they want, but they dont like doing it of course. |

If you nicely and pleasantly call to cancel, you might get it. |

Dealerships will normally limit it to $2,500 or $5,000. The way to do the BT is to finance for whatever, and use Chase and Discover to balance transfer to the LOAN, not to the dealership. Both Chase and Discover will treat a BT to any non-individual entity with an account number. So you get nailed for about a month on finance charges for the car, but then it's free for life.
When I opened Discover a few days ago, I was told the minimum charge was $1.00. So even with the $0.50 minimum finance fee X 12 months, $6.00 per year in Discover fianance charges is better than nearly any rate on anything else if you transfer enough. Such as the balance on my car note, another credit card, etc.
Chase will also BT to you and treat it as a purchase versus a cash advance. I did so for $10,000 free for 9 1/2 months. Put it in Ford MM, which gave me $25 to open, and pays about 1 point higher than ING. Paid Chase 9 months at the minimum payment, and just paid balance off last month.
Thanks for the free money. |

Recent offer I received from discover offered what has been mentioned plus a $15 cash back bonus award for first transaction made with the card. I'm wondering, could you pay off school loans with this? For 0% it would save a lot on interest I pay every month. |

I just called discover about the 0% BT for life offer. All I had to do was ask for it. They took my application over the phone and said I'll have the card in about 3 weeks. Its 0% APR till Jan 2004, which will get extended as long as I make 2 purchases on the card per month. There is no minimum limit on the purchases. |

I called up Chase, and the person was annoying. They kept trying to make their 0% for 6 months card sound like a 0% for life balance transfer. I'd ask, "Is that 0% for life, or just a period of time. I'm calling about your 0% for balance transfer for the life of the balance". The person would respond, "This card gives you yada yada for 6 months".
I then called up discover. The lady took the application over the phone, and everything went perfectly. She told me if I was not approved for the platnum card, I would get the classic. When asking if the classic card had the same 0% deal for life of the balance, she said yes. Therefore it should be pretty easy for anyone to get this deal from discover.
If anyone has gotten the Chase deal with out officially being "invited", I'd love to hear how you did it. Are people only getting this to work uninvited via discover? Thanks. |

So it's just 2 purchases each month? If i paid off the 2 purchases each month, that wouldn't be charged interest right and that is all i need to do? just make 2 purchases each month. I am not required to carry a balance all the time am i?? |

The purchases would immediately begin accruing interest. Make sure to take into account the minimum finance charge, usually .50 or $1.
If you borrow 10k at 0% and $100 at 15% your effective interest rate is .0014%. Paying interest is not necessarily a bad thing.
There is no way to avoid carrying a balance when carrying a balance. |

Sierra Hotel!!!
Just got off the phone with Discover. Offer available to my account, but not to wife's account. No obvious rationale why I get the offer and my wife doesn't. Random? Maybe next month??
Anyways, my offer is even better than above: 0% until March and extended on a month to month basis so long as I make ONE purchase a month beginning in Feb of at least a dollar until paid off. I can make additional BTs until Oct up to CL. Even offered to transfer balance from my car loan. Have to think about that one, only paying 2.9%; but the rest of my debt is at 0%. |

In coming years, Discover could change the terms of these deals with those one page disclosure docs that sometimes come with a billing statement ? I dont think they would cuz it would definitely generate negative articles and exposes etc etc. |

Ahh - Yes, the old we can change the agreement anytime we feel like it clause. They are sending me this deal in writing. Should be interesting to carefully review it. Hope to milk it -- after ~3 years -- cost ~$15 -- ~CL/2 balance. Nice looking spreadsheet. Discover keeps giving away money!!!
BTW: No transaction fee!
Strategy: 1. Max out credit line just before Oct deadline. 2. Pay minimums. 3. Charge $1 in gas each month beginning in Feb. |

Just called Discover - have a platinum card with them. They told me they can offer me 9.9% until feb '04! YEAH!!! Then the girl offered to lower it to 7.9. What a deal! I transferred $100k to my checking account immediately. Now, where can I earn more than 7.9% to make up the difference??? |
