I tried to move a measly $1800 from one chase card to another today. The old card has zero balance, and hasn't been used for nearly a year. The new card has a 0% balance. I was going to leave 1k on the old, and move it to the new which had a 9k limit. At first everything seemed fine, but then the CSR asked about Income, and said there would be a hard pull. Somehow in their system, I needed the pull. I go through with it. I hope they didn't do a pull!

Not sure if this is your case, but from my experience, Chase will review your credit history if the resulting line is above $50,000. If you recently open an account with them, they will just review your credit report and don't need to pull another one. I have no problem of reallocation without a credit pull for resulting line above $35,000.
Also, I can not reallocate a Chase Continental credit limit to another Chase credit card. And, I can not reallocate a Citi Home Reward credit limit to another Citi credit card.
Anyone has reallocated CL from Citi PremierePass to ATT Universal Card? The reason is Citi PP doesn't report credit limit properly, it will always look like you max out credit line on your credit report. So if you use it for 0% BT, it will hurt your CS since it's 100% utilization on one card.
My plan is to move the CL from Citi PP to ATT Universal so I can do a BT on ATT Universal. Any comments?
MBNA/BofA MC reporting for 7years - Beginning CL 30K Moved 20K Leaving 10K avail BofA Signature visa reporting for 9 years- Beginning CL 25K Moved in 20K leaving 45K avail
Only took 5 minutes, pulled my CR today and the new limits are already showing! It was just done yesterday, seems kinda fast. Is that normal?
Just combined 6 Chase cards, the greatest CSR ever assisted me, when I first said I wanted combine all the cards, she said to do that many cards I have to get the supervisor and do a credit pull, she said let me look around, I don't see her, lets see If I can do this without her and without doing a pull, yes I can she said, she preceded to do it, could not talk her out of the BT fee though, all in all to about 10 min. tops, the combined CL showed up immediately online, also about the combing MBNA with BOA, I'm surprised they are still letting me use my MBNA Schwab visa card to pay off my BOA Cards through bill pay, hope this does not come to an end.

I had the same experience, the CSR was pleasant, but wouldn't budge on the hard pull. They called me back 15 minutes later and approved 6 different cards CLs merged onto my Sony 0% for a year card
GE Money Bank (mostly has private-label cards like Wal-Mart, PayPal, and Sleepy's) does not allow conversion or reallocation, at least for its private-label cards. Maybe you can with regular cards (like their Low APR card).
Accidentally posted my reallocation experience with Citi in the wrong thread, so copying it here.
2-18-07. I called Citibank India thru the AT&T Universal CS#, with the plan of consolidating a $4000 Conoco-Phillips66 MC limit and closing, and taking $7700/$8700 from a Dividend Select, making $16,200 on the AT&T and one less Citibank card (yes, I'm well aware of the prevailing wisdom stating never cancel a card, but I'm going to need another Citibank card come fall and want to ensure I don't hit a "too much credit/too many cards" situation). My average account age would have taken a minor hit but nothing disastrous.
They could not reallocate the Conoco-Phillips66. My choices there were: 1) cancel it, 2) keep it open while never being used and never receiving any offers on it. Not sure what it is, but this card seems "dead" to Citibank as I'm concerned. Other FWers have posted I could have luck allocating to a Hilton card, I'll keep that in mind though I doubt ever needing one. On the Dividend Select they stated they could not reallocate $7700 and leave the card open, I'd have to reallocate the entire $8700 and close the card. I probably should have thought about it, but the fact is I need a higher CL on the AT&T for a Sept BT, and no longer use the Platinum Select (was just hoping to get a good offer down the road on it, but guess not). So I authorized it while clarifying I expected the reporting to show the card was closed at MY request, not theirs. As sonnysighedup pointed out in the other thread in which I posted this, the smartest thing to do would have been to stop and call back until reaching a competent CSR who understood reallocation. I just made the wrong call on the spot.
So now I have $13,200 CL on the AT&T ($3k less than planned), a totally useless ConocoPhillips card (unless all other 5% gas cards go away and I need the 3%), one less Citibank card, and a slightly worse average account age (though not as bad as it would have been as my Conoco card is 3 or 4 years older than my Div Select). And as FWers have also pointed out, there wasn't really a need to lower my # of cards, Citi would have done this themselves upon a new app if an issue. Oh well, c'est la vie. Lessons learned.
taewlee said: can you shift / reallocate credit line and the balance as well? No. (At least: I don't recall reading about anyone doing so.) You can shift unused CL while leaving a balance (and enough CL to be below 90% or 50% or whatever your target utilization).

I just talked to them about a 10,500 line and a new 8,000 line and they said it was not a problem. I do not see why they would care the total line is still the same.
Yep, but in more than one step. Use an intermediate short-term BT to an external account to accomplish your goal.
Issuer X: You have old card A with $10k limit and $8k balances at 12.49% APR You see an offer for card B from issuer X for a 0% APR.
Issuer Y: You have a card C with high enough limit, and hopefully low/no BT fees (some Citi account offers)
Transfer the balance from A to C a few days before A's statement closes - make sure to xfer the amount plus any finance charges on the amount expected, plus say $10 of a cushion, so that new balance on A's statement will be zero. Apply for B once your $0 balance on A is recorded in a statement; get the card. Then once you get the card, request credit line reallocation from A to B and then request BT from C to B. Now you've both lowered the interest rate and utilization overall and on the new card as well.
I've recently done a chase consolidation/BT. In one call transferred partial CLs from two cards into a new one with 0% BT offer, then BT from an external account. All took about 3 minutes!

I have consolidated my available credit with both Chase and Citibank. Chase I have done repeatedly.
Citibank I did with AT&T Universal Card because they had a 0% offer for new customers and I was an old customer with a huge credit line. So I opened up the new account and transferred over my available credit to the new account. (I closed the old one which in hindsight I should not have done because its better to keep old accounts open to improve one's credit score).
I applied online for 2 Citibank cards last week & got approvals back on both. I wanted to do a BT for $16k total, but got $8500 on the first card and $8750 on the second. The first card was for 0% for the life of the transfer, as long as you made 2 charges a month. The second was 0% for a year, regardless of account activity. The second card gave me the opportunity to have a check directly mailed to me for the BT...the first one didn't. So, I opted to have the check sent to me on the second offer and have decided to wait on the first to see what I get in my welcome package.
My question is, I'd like to reallocate the second card to the first so I can get my limit close to the $16k I needed in the first place. Has anybody had experience with something like this, especially with brand new cards? Is there a waiting period before they'd let me do this?
The AMEX "on crack" upped CLI has me wondering when would be a good time to try to reallocate the lines with a BOA Visa. I upped my BOA AMEX to 19900 to hopefully prevent any fraud dept calls. Wisdom anyone?
AMEX cards issued by Citi, BofA and other banks have nothing to do with American Express-issued cards and their crazy CLI. Would you attempt to reallocate CL between BofA and Citi just because both gave you a Visa card?

WHAT???
I upped my BOA AMEX card last night (using the increase credit limit button). Yes- BOA issued the AMEX card but it's STILL AN AMEX CARD. Now I have a BOA visa card as well. I really want the higher limit on the visa not the AMEX and from this thread we are discussing reallocating lines between cards of the same issuer. So what's so confusing here????
I am just asking at what point of time I could do this without the fraud dept giving me a call.

Well, the AMEX "on crack" thread you mentioned deals exclusively with CLI "abnormalities" on the American Express website. That's the confusing part.
fwiw, yesterday Chase would not allow a reallocation from my personal line to my business card. I did however consolidate 3 personal lines together. bleh, so I had to eat another $75 to bt out of the bus line.
Just for another reference point, citi allows reallocation from personal to business which is very helpful for personal credit report utilization numbers. Sorry if a repost.
So I called back to Discover today to reallocate from one line to the other and was told it is not possible. I wish I would have done it a few weeks ago when I called before. I have talked to 3 different people. I don't get why this is such a big deal.
I have a BofA personal credit card with a fairly large credit limit. I would like to open a new card and transfer the limit from the old card to the new card. However, every single BofA cc offer that I could find (and I have looked long and hard) with a 0% BT had no cap. It definitely makes no sense to do a BT if there is a 3% fee with no cap. However, my current card has an offer to open a new business card with 0% BT and no fee. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer a credit limit from a BofA personal card to a BofA business card?

Has anyone else had good luck reallocating btwn USAA cards? I have a $20k limit on their MasterCard, and just got a 0% offer for their USAA Rewards Amer1can Express (12 months), with no BT fee and no convenience check fee. Seems silly not to take this one, although it would be my first 0% offer.

yes, absolutely. i did this very thing with no problems. when i reallocated, i found out the max CL for one USAA card is $50K. see what kind of CL they offer with the AMEX, but i but you can get to this level (perhaps by requesting an increase on the mastercard before reallocating.) USAA seems very generous with CLs.

good luck!
lhendricks, thanks for the info. This morning I tried increasing my CL on the MasterCard. I truthfully answered my monthly income and they said they could not apprv an increase and a ltr would be mailed to me w/in 7 days. Perhaps I'll have better luck w/ CSR on the phone.
I'm nervous about the AMEX card because it's my first 0% offer and I want to make sure I have all my bases covered. Sounds like all I have to do is apply for the card (I'm also going to apply for some other Chase/Citi cards for a mini-AOR for sign up bonuses). Once I get my USAA AMEX, xfer the CL from the MC, and rqst convenience checks. Then write a check to myself and deposit into savings account. Make minimum payments and on month 11 pay off the entire balance. I expect my credit score to go down in the meantime. I am also considering not using 100% of my CL at USAA, but keep it to <89%, but I still have to do more FW Finance reading on that subject. Thanks.

I did an online increase with my Chase BP card that I had opened, used, and consistently paid off for 6 months. In the box I put 15K. Previously, I had a 5K credit line, and I thought I would shoot for the sky. I didn't expect to get all of it. I checked the next day, and my new credit limit was 20K. When you enter an amount, is it the amount of increase, or what you want your new line to be? What is a typical increase? Is a 15K unusual? And lastly - What helps your initial credit line (what requirements do you need to have to open an account with 20+K)? Thanks
