Post the various banks / cc issuers which permit shifting/reallocation of credit lines among various credit cards from the same issuer. Please only post if you are CERTAIN the issuer allows it (or if you tried and they would not allow it).

AMEX:
No problem reallocating CLs.

4/2007 - Successfully moved btw Cash Rebate, Blue Cash, and Starwood.

Chase:
now seems to consistently offer me (in NY) CL reallocations, but w/hard pulls for large credit line consolidations. (grrarrgh, late 05 -- in 7/06, have not had to get hard pulls to do similarly sized reallocations, which seems to mirror jairocon's experience)
Chase allowed me to re-allocate 4 lines into 5th one, resulting in $36.9k in one phone call without any hard pull. (jairocon 7/15/06).
01/2007 - (yorick) Chase CSR told me to reallocate from one account to another the following criteria applied (this was an attempt to move personal to business, but it didn't seem to matter):

                  • Each account must be open at least 6 months
                  • The resulting combined CL cannot be over $35,000

2/25/7 - Chase definitely let me reallocated all my personal lines giving me a resultant CL of $49,000 on one card. These were ALL NEW CARDS obtained that month as part of my AOR. They would NOT let me reallocated my United Biz or Marriott Biz. - psychtobe

4/11/07 (Ronk) - Chase has allowed me to reallocate a resulting CL of $64,000 from multiple cards. I was told that request for reallocation from more than one card would result in a hard pull, but that CSR could do one card for me while I waited. I called back two more times over the next few weeks and eventually moved most of my Chase credit onto the one card (Sony) offering 18 mo. 0%/no fee BT. Each reallocated card was fairly new (none older than 6 mos.).

7/19/07 (UnixLab) - Called for move CL from one biz card to the other without problem. But it does not reflect right away. It states it takes 3-5 business day. Also CSR states you can only move CL from consumer to business, not business to consumer.

I was able to consolidate a personal Chase card ($6k) into a business Chase card ($11k combined). 9/16/05

10/5/07 - Tried to move $6k from one card onto another with $13k limit. Was told I had to speak with lending center or something like that. Not sure why. They did recently give me a new card and number for the $6k account, this may be the problem, despite the account itself being over a year old.

10/9/07 - Was able to successfully move a 24k line from United Miles Biz (no 0% offer) to Chase Cash Rewards Biz (0% for 12 months). CSR said would take 24-72 hours. Was also able to move from personal Flexible Rewards MC to Chase Cash Rewards Biz (took effect immediately). New Chase business line had 61k limit. --DJPILL

7/2007 I reallocated several lines to a Chase Business card resulting in an $86K line with no credit pull - Thisguy
11/2007 I reallocated several lines to another Chase Business card resulting in an $44K line with no credit pull. Reallocated from another personal card to $69K eve with no pulls - no problems - Thisguy

1/25/08 Had Chase Freedom w/ $14k. Received Chase GM Business w/ $12k. Transferred $13k to business w/ 0% BT offer applying no problem.

3/8/08 Confirm the above. Very easy to reallocate from personal to personal, personal to business to take advantage of 0% credit lines. No credit pulls.

4/10/08 - Re-allocated all but $500 from 2 personal and a 2nd business card onto my main business card with no trouble to take advantage of a 0% offer. Initially said you'll receive something in "7-10 days," but I asked for an expedite and it was completed while on the phone with them. Free wire transfer as well. No credit pull. -Tempest25
4/08 - Easily moved $2500 from one card to another making $20kish, told effective immediately. No pull mentioned (we'll see).

7/8/08 - Applied 2 CC (Freedom Visa signature & Visa Platinum), and approved for 10k each. Since 1) Visa Platinum has 0% - 12 mo - 99 max fee, and 2) Freedom Visa Signature doesn't report credit line, I requested to move 5k CL from Freedom to Platinum. Everything went smooth, confirmed new credit lines on next sign-on, and no inquiry.

Discover:
used to stand firm on not consolidating, now appears to more readily consolidate.

4/29/07 (mattun) - I was able to swap my $12,000 credit line on my old card with the $8,000 credit line on my new card by asking nicely (old card about 6 years old, new one under a month).

3/31/07 (jimbocobb) - reallocated credit line from existing cards(2) to new Discover card, but did it as part of the approval process (callback from Discover) on a solicited pre-approved card...might have more success applying for new card over the phone and requesting this than in requesting it later during the card activation process.

6/14/07 (capnanon) - reallocated $5k from a plain Discover card to new Discover More, total CL $15k. No problem at all, I just asked for it after I opened the card and before I asked for a BT. Reflected immediately online.

6/15/07 (Lippyroa) - Was able to reallocate from More card to Miles card. Spoke to over 6 CSRs. Eventually was able to reallocate by speaking to CSR at "New Accounts" Department (open 9a-9:45p EST). Verified new CLs online immediately.

7/18/08 (UnixLab) - Called for move CL from Discover get more card to Discover Business card. It shows up right away.

11/16/07 (tolonen) - Allowed credit limit transfer from personal card to business card. Was informed that the per card credit limit for a Discover card is $20k (thisguy reported receiving a slightly higher limit, but it is frowned upon by Discover).

12/20/07 (wheelman76) - discover wouldn't let me transfer anything to my new business miles card. Did confirm that i could reallocate on my personals though.

1/2/07 (wheelman76) - Again dealing with discover they are denying me any opportunity to combine any of my discover card's credit limits. I've now had to allow them to have me "re-apply" and let them do a hard pull on my record so that I can be within one month of having received the card. Long story short, every discover card from here on out i will be moving my highest limit card to a brand new acct when applying. I kinda got snookered on this one, but lesson learned.

1/15/08 (74ak) - Reallocated most CL of Discover More (Personal) to Discover Business w/o any issues.Reflected online next business day. Had to call business dept. and leave 1k on personal

5/27/08 (WideOpenSpaces) - I've had a regular Discover Card since 1997 with a $15,000 limit. I just opened a Miles card (May 2008) and was granted a limit of $8,000. After calling in, I had my accounts redistributed to $13,000 and $10,000 respectively without any problems.

Juniper Bank:
(TiVo MC, Frontier Airlines MC) allows for credit line consolidation and reallocation.
Shot down twice trying to consolidate US Airways with Harvard MC. Will try again. UPDATE: Finally got it. Stupid CSR had to call credit dept., which is only open certain hours.

7/2007 - Consolidated US Air CL to NationlParks card. Asked them to close US Air, could have kept it open.

10/2007 - (mattun) Was unable to move CL between Travelocity and Carnival card (they were only willing to combine them... really annoying because the Travelocity was $17000 and the Carnival $500).

11/2007 Moved $31K from Sea Miles to Bank Atlantic Business - Thisguy

08/2008 Moved $15K from Bank Atlantic Business back to Juniper National Parks 866-408-4064

Bank of America:
Update : BofA allowed reallocation of 12k to a new card without closing the old card ($500 Cl remaining) - Jagd71 10/24/06. Ditto, but they made me keep 2000 on my old card - therivler1 11/22/2006 Same here, but they left $1000.--mattun 4/29/07
If experiencing difficulty with regular CSRs with reallocation for BT purposes, try contacting the BT dept directly: 866-229-8607.. they're like magical little elves. -charliek 6/20/07 Confirmed. Love the elves! -NotLarry 8/13/07 | 8/25/07 Confirmed - reallocated to a new card and BT'd directly to checking effortlessly. The CSR was *very* helpful! -Ryan/3-31-08 Elves are awesome! Have 3 BofA CCS reallocated two to one (kept $500 on each) to take advantage of BT offer. DD right to my checking. Still has to update online, but the whole thing was very fast, 10-15 mins. Thanks FW! partygirlie
* 8/16/07 - You can move CL among personal cards, VERY EASY, just call CS. Happens instantly. Also easy to move among business cards, just call business CS.
* 8/16/07 - Hard to move from personal to business, had success with calling business CS a few times. Almost impossible to move from business to personal. Business CS will ask you to call personal CS, personal CS will ask you to call business CS, etc.

3/8/08 Confirm the above. Impossible to do anything between personal & business. Two completely separate divisions within BoA. Personal to personal is very easy.

Citi:
Confirmed: multiple reallocations with CITI (dividend platinum select) and AMEX (blue cash) - even combining max blue cash credit line from 2 cards to one card @ $34,000 .

10/26/06
Citibank allows for personal card reallocations in one phone call without any hard pull. You can't reallocate Citi Professional to personal cards and some have reported you can't reallocate limits between CitiBusiness cards. - Snyder81

9/8/07
Not true anymore, can reallocate between Professional and personal cards. - rushnrockt

09/21/07 Dulanic
Attempted to reallocate from Citi Professional to the AT&T card and was denied, was informed you can not reallocate from a business card to a personal, however, you can do it from personal to buisness -

4/17/07
Citi Home Rebates card could not be combined with Premier Pass or with Driver's Edge Card. When Combining Premier Pass, cannot take the CL below $2,000 (though they citi indicated otherwise on the phone) -FWLurker

5/10/2007
Could not reallocate from Hilton HHonors Signature Visa to other Citi cards. Was initially told I could, a week later the final word is "no." However, I was allowed to convert Hilton line to regular Diamond Rewards and THEN reallocate - Dman081

8/6/2007...Approved for Citi UPromise 4.5k, Professional 1k (existing Dividend = 31k). Rec'd invitation from Professional to increase line (see details here)... new UPromise = 500 Dividend Plat Select = 5k Professional = 31k

8/21/2007 - Some Citi cards (such as the PremierPass Elite) have what is called NPSSL (no pre-set spending limit), these cards' CL CAN NOT be reallocated. I had to convert mines to a basic Dividend MC. Then I successfully reallocated $19K from personal Dividend MC to CitiBusiness MC. Called business collect number on back of card. Showed up next day.

10/09/2007 - Tried twice to reallocate from dividend and premierpass to citi professional but failed. But successfully moved between personal accounts.

10/11/2007 - Denied allocating credit from mtvU to PremierPass Elite both because my CL on PP is "close to the limit" ($16500) and because I have a 0% BT offer on PP. CSR said can't reallocate to a card with > 3.9% BT offer. Lame!

11/16/2007 - Citi - Personal to personal
Reallocations to 0% cards will be denied by normal CSR. Call the activation department to get reallocation with no hassles. 1-888-293-6670 - poo
This didn't work for me. - TL

12/21/07 Consolidation worked to bypass this problem. Hypersion

12/24/07 Citi - Personal to personal... Called 888-293-6670 and moved with success! (reduction from old showed online immediately with the increase on the 0% offer account showing within 20 minutes). Cards were: from DivPlatSel to UPromise.

12/24/07 Citi-personal to business -declined. personal to personal...Key bank to Citi Home Rebate(0%BT), left $500 on Key

1/2/08 Citi personal to personal, easily moved limits from 2 Dividend cards to the 5% CashReturns card. CSR explained that only restriction was for cards with BT offers below 3% and with a capped/no fee.

1/16/08 Citi personal to personal, forced to consolidate older Dividend account in to Home Rebate account. Worked successfully for 0% int and 0 fees for 12 months on the Home Rebate card.

1/25/08 Had $30k on personal DivPlatSel MC. Applied for CitiBusiness ($10k) and CitiProfessional ($9k). Transferred $8k from Prof to Bus (wouldn't let me cancel prof to add full line to bus. had to leave $1k on card). 0% BT applies. Wouldn't allow personal to business. Will try again once first $8k is complete and update.

1/27/08 Update to above... Converted my WORLD DivPlatSel (no spending limit, which I didn't know) to a regular Platinum select card, and was able to transfer over $29k to the CitiBusiness Card. Started w/ B=$10k, Prof=$9k, and Pers=$30k. Ended w/ B=$47k, Prof=$1k (which I cancelled), and Pers=$1k. *Update, Citi messedup up, and my Pers=$30k again while still having B=$47!

5/5/08 Moved $15k from an AA World MC to a newly-opened Associated bank affiliate card. Easily and quickly done in one call.

9/03/08 Moved $5k from an old Citi Home Rebate (personal) to new CitiBiz card. No difficulties, used number on back of Biz card (1-800-750-7453). Incorrect (see below)

9/05/08 Now have spoken to different representatives giving different answers about whether another Citi personal card was available to shift the line - one said yes, but I was unfortunately disconnected, another said no because the target card was a 0% with no fee, which excludes the cards from being transferred to each other. <sigh>

WAMU:
No luck on consolidation or reallocation. Tried three times on two different dates. (Longwood8)
WAMU may not have a retention department. Read my retention experience with WAMU (ProBanker)

USAA:
5/18/07
Successfully moved $15k from my AMEX to my VISA. Had to get supervisor approval since it was taking my CL over $35k. Was no issue though. (smason1978)

UPDATED 11/7 with new CCs added!

1. CITIBANK allows reallocation of credit limits.
I had 2 high limit Citi cards, then applied for the AT&T 5% Citi card. They gave me a $500 limit but offered to reallocate in a letter sent the same time as the new cards (glad they knew I wouldnt be happy with that limit). I moved $4000 off each of my Citi Dividend and Exxon Mastercards to my new AT&T Universal card. Other members report you may only have 3 Citi cards.

2. AMEX allows reallocation.
NOTE however, that there has been prior discussion in this forum of some problems reallocating bc certain AMEX cards are issued by 2 different banks: AMEX and AMEX Centurion. No limit on # of cards you can have. FW members have reported problems or being asked for financial documentation on accounts having credit lines exceeding $20k.

3. CHASE allows reallocation, even from personal to business cards.
No limit on # of cards you can have, but FW members have reported additional documentation/procedures may be necessary for very high credit lines.

4. MBNA allows reallocation for "original" MBNA cards before BofA merger.

Card Issuers that have been reported to NOT ALLOW reallocation: DISCOVER.

BankOne allows reallocation. I reallocated all of my $5000 from my Yahoo! visa to my 1% cash back card.

also can people note how many cards you can have w/ the company - ie. citibank is 3; AMEX unlimited.

I have successfully reallocated between two different AMEX divisions. I've got two cash rebate cards. One issued by AMEX Centurion and the other by AMEX. Two different CSR call centers. It always has been a hassle and I usually have to follow-up on the request, but I've successfully reallocated on at least three different occassions.

Also, Chase will not allow reallocation. I've tried several times to no avail.

First USA does. Earlier this year I closed two accounts and conolidated the credit line to one card. (just don't tell the wife we have a credit card with a 60k line of credit)

I wonder if building too high a credit line on one card will shut down lines on other cards, cause an income audit where I have to send in two years of Fed tax returns. (read about this nightmare from other FW posters) I'm thinking of shifting credit lines on AMEX for last minute bond buying but have hesitated because of this reason.

Edit: just corrected myself...I should shift the lines and buy hoards of bonds before my anniversary date in December to prevent working up the tiers in the new card year. After that, if they do audit and lower my credit limits, I wouldn't care as much.

MBNA

Had a MBNA platinum with a 21,000 limit. Got an MBNA World Points and had 10,000 reallocated to it.

Discover will not allow reallocations. I have only tried it once, but they would not allow it on this occasion. Have done reallocations with First USA, Citibank, and MBNA to substantiate previous postings. Sorry to hear that Chase does not allow it as I was hoping to do a reallocation with them. Another question under this thread. What cards allow reallocation from a husband's card with wife as authorized user to wife's card with husband as authorized user or vice versa?

Definitely AMEX WILL NOT... Just got off the phone with their CSR who said I couldn't transfer credit line from my husband's Optima to my AMEX cash rebate card (we are authorized users on each other's card). She said I would have to be primary on both accounts.

I assume an AT&T card would count as 1 of those 3 ?

I've repeated tried to get Discover to consolidate my Discover Platinium and older Discover Private Issue lines, but no luck. With Bank One, I have successfully transferred credit lines and/or closed cards and moved their credit lines. However, more recently I've been told by the CSRs that getting a resulting Bank One line with more than $30-35K requires some sort of special approval, and can't be done over the phone. I haven't pursued that any further.

To answer SIS's question, I have done it with Citi, AT&T (citi again), and AMEX (blue to green cash, wife's blue to wife's optima -- the former did not get done righ the first time through, I have no idea if it was a bank-related issue though)

Both I and my wife have had both AT&T and Citicards, while applying for one more of each card simultaneously -- giving 4 cards total (2 of each). Neither of us had a problem.

Maybe it was because the applications were almost simultaneous (within an hour or two of each other).
