I had a quick question about balance transfers relating to the strategies in this thread that I hope someone can answer...

Say I got card (Card A) that currently has $0 balance and $5000 credit limit.
I wanna apply for another card (Card B) from a different company, and with the application I mention I want to balance transfer $5000 from Card A. Will they approve this? So if the balance transfer goes through I will have a -$5000 credit on Card A, and Card A will just send me a check for $5000? With that check I can pay off the $5000 balance on Card B?

Wrong thread, totally off topic, but yes.

Question for (4).
Should I pay part of the balance before closing date? so that, it won't show high % untilization in credit report, or just let it shows high untilization so that the CC knows you use their card heavily. Thank you.

Basically, our largest lines were all obtained in one of three ways: (1) providing financial statements, (2) line consolidation, or (3) large BT requests upon opening the card..

Nice thread DH...I agree with your reasons 1-3 above as the ways to achive high lines and add the following:

4. HEAVY use of card. This is fairly obvious, but running a card up to 75-100% of its CL and paying off in full makes for frequent and consistent increases. Many of my CLs that remained unchanged for years started increasing after I used my card to buy large amounts of Bonds...

5. BT promotions where the issuer will increase your credit line for performing a BT (this is uaually with AMEX, and usually allows you to increase your CL by $10k)...

My largest lines are (relatively) small: the only one that exceeds $25k is MBNA, most hover near $20k...I tend to have several cards from each issuer rather than consolidating the limits onto a single card. I've never provided financial docs. I may consider consolidating, but I dont want to get rid of my older (non rewards) accounts because it will lower the average age of my credit profile...

In my experience, MBNA was the only issuer to perform frequent line increases without large charge activity....

snoopy123, the key is to use the card heavily but not have a large (>50%) balance AT THE CLOSE of the billing cycle. Other threads discuss why in more detail.

you also need to analyze WHY you would even need to do this...if you dont have a need to do this, dont bother.

Question:
Have a 15k Cap One line and recently was offered 2.9 for life on BT. Wanted to move 20k Citibank and 21k Penfed car loan to the Cap One card. Customer Rep said the computer approved a 2k limit increase (to 17k). The rep told me there isn't any other steps to take for appeal, etc. Is this correct information? Should I ask for a supervisor or is this just a waste of time?

Thanks.

Starwood/AMEX called and heard that I had large daily bank balances. This is an indication that you have the liquid capital (ability to pay)

I think the greatest flaw in the credit reporting system is that the ability to pay factor doesnt enter the equation. FOr example I think a person who pays large balances off in full should get extra points on the credit report over another person who has not demonstrated the ability to pay a large balance in full.

Disclaimer: I know I don't have a limit over $25K. I'm just posting this as a potential way others could get one.

As a freshman in college I received two Citibank cards by signing up for free t-shirts or whatnot. I merged the two cards for a total CL of about $2000. Since then, I'm been going to their online services and clicking the "credit line increase request." I am now up to a CL of $15,800. When you click this option, it will either take you to a credit line increase request form (not the way to go) or it will automatically present you with an increased CL. It seems to me that which page you go to depends on how much you've spent. In general, I click this every few months. I've noticed that in months where I haven't used the card at all I'll get the request form (bad) but if I used it moderately I will get a new CL. It's taken me 3 years to get a CL of $15,800, after starting at $2,000. I know it's not much, but as a student with relatively no income I think it's sizeable. I'm just posting this so that some of you out there with real incomes that can get a respectable CL to start with can then multiply it, hopefully as much as I did. Good luck.

sinik,

Which citi card do you have? I have the Associates card which later became a citi card. But everytime I clicked on the Request for credit line increase, it always brought me to the form. I am assuming since Associates is not a direct citi card, the system is slightly different.

Hi DAve,

I tried looking for the card you mentioned above and couldn't find any info on their website. I believe most of the card they offer has a max limit of $20,000.

Got a Providian invitation with access code. Applied and got a $30k limit with 0% offer until August 2005.

If you want a high credit card limit, I recommend opening a credit card account with MBNA. I opened my first account with them when I was in college (1991), and they just kept automatically raising the limit to the ridiculous level my card is now at ($42k).

Until very recently, my MBNA card has been a secondary card that I've used sparingly, so it wasn't raised due to heavy purchase activity...

FWIW, the limit was $5k in 1993, $15k in 1994, $20k in 1996, $30k in 1998, and $40k sometime in 1999-2000. I never asked for a boost in my credit limit once and some of the largest increses occurred when I hadn't used this particular card for months at a time.

This is my exact experience except that I had consolidated two smaller (<$5k) MBNA accounts to arrive at today's $46+k. I started with one card for a 0% BT offer back in 97. I'm guessing that since I have done many BT with MBNA and my income has increased most every year since getting out of college (1991), that may explain why my CL was automatically increased w/o requesting them.

I also carry a couple $20k plus cards (GM Card started at $7.5k and Southwest Card, started at $11k) as my main CC's for purchases and they occasionally have been increasing my CL w/o requesting it. These two cards are always paid off every month.

Interesting thread.

Is it the no annual fee Southwest MC? What was your income, credit scores, credit history length, etc. like when you were initially approved for 11K CL? Was it issued by the same bank at the time (Juniper)?

lumolelu, this was a mailed solicitation. Cap1 offers many products only to targeted customers, esp so-called "super-prime" customers with top FICO scores.

Thanks for the reply Dave. That explains the amount in itself. BTW, before the $30k card, did you have cap one card before? If so, could it somewhat affect their decision in the CL?

alert mods

lumolelu, this particular solicitation went to an immediately family member who did NOT have a cap1 card before then, but had great credit. I have a 22K and 21.5K "no hassle" card with them already, and have not received their best offers since getting those (both in 2002.)

I got a Cap1 2.9/life up to $30K solicitation recently.

I called on it because my HELOC is going nowhere but up, and I had to get a car loan today anyway, so I've decided to do an app-o-rama. The bastiges at the dealership ran a hard pull on me, so I had two pulls getting the car financed. (At least on EXP. My CU only pulls Exp, but I haven't checked EQ and TRW yet to see what the dealer pulled.) My EXP score was 790 yesterday before the pulls, and 781 today after the two from the dealer and CU. I also applied for the USB "free laptop" card since my wife's machine is dying, and the difference between the 10.9 on it and the 8 I'm still carrying on student loans (you try having consolidated in 98) is negligible to make it worth the hassle. According to the FWF thread, they pull EXP, but EXP won't let me do two checks in a day, so I can't verify until tomorrow.

So I probably had three pulls on EXP in the past 24 hours by the time I called Cap One. I asked them for a 22K BT, but didn't get an instant approval. I suspect I'm going to get a 'too many inquiries' rejection or a $500 card, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I'm confused jclark--was this 30K offer for a new card then? If so, what were the other terms? If not, is the line already 30k or with this BT increase the line?

With those scores, I don't think you have to worry--you should get a large line.
