I just got a voicemail from American Express Financial Advisors saying they found my resume and were hiring financial advisors in the area. My resume has no financial background, just engineering and computer stuff...
Do they just pretty much hire anyone?

Yes. It's a sales job, which appeals to few people and has high turnover (very few people can sell). Unless you know a lot of rich people willing to let you manage their financial affairs, your best bet is to skip this job and others like it.
probably. i don't know for sure, but they are probably salespeople who are responsible for pushing financial products/services on behalf of AMEX.

Oh no, I'm never considered it for a second. I was just curious... I mean, if a company is cold calling anyone with no background in finances to be a "financial advisor", it makes me wonder what kind of financial services they really offer. Makes them seem shady, which is odd coming from a fairly big and respected company like AMEX...

AMEX is not very well respected in the brokerage industry. They are a second or third tier player. They will hire anyone who can put on a suit and push their crappy funds or products.

I don't know that you can fairly equate their Financial Advisors with their Brokerage Service. The two don't really go hand-in-hand. You can hire an AMEX financial advisor without even having an AMEX account. Conversely, you can utilize their brokerage services without ever dealing with a Financial Advisor.
