Thanks OP

MBNA is not for everyone. They tend to be more strict with applicants then other issuers. Be good to them and they'll return the favor. However, don't fall behind or pay the minimum very often. They can have a very low tolerance for customers whom they feel are "becoming" too risky.

I kinda confused why anyone even cares about the BT. The killer feature of this card is the cashback, and if you do a BT and carry it (if you don't carry it, why bother), then if you are also charging for the rewards, all you're doing is racking up interest costs on the purchases.

Use this card for rewards & some OTHER card for BTs -- there are plenty of alternatives.

alert mods

Yes, don't fall for the 0% BT offer on this one. If you apply by phone, and have a balance floating somewhere, they will target that balance, naming the amount of the balance and bank, and ask if you would like to transfer it to their 0% til 6/05. They ask what you are getting at the other bank (0%!!), when that will end, etc. and try to sell you their 0% so it is nice to think in advance that you don't want it. There is a BT fee and like others have said, a 0% balance will kill the extra cash reward incentive because payments will go to the 0% before the higher rate new purchase balance.

Don't forget, this card also features MBNA Netacess where you can get an exra month float on nonMBNA bills. I've paid my AMEX, Fleet and Discover current purchases with Netaccess last month for the first time and judging from my first statement of a minimum payment to AMEX (my test trial), no finance or service charge.

This is a tempting deal. I'm a bit nervous to apply to MBNA again though. When I last applied for their Merrill card they not only denied me but threatened to close my other account with them (my FICO is 700, but I have alot on 0% deals). Only after faxing them my info did they go forward with my app. I'd be interested if anyone runs into any problem like that. See:
List Credit card issuers that have closed your accounts / reduced credit lines / taken other adverse action due to usage patterns for more info...

alert mods

Wow! That is the quickest approval I've ever gotten from MBNA. For my Fidelity 529 and AAA cards, I had to fill out the app and wait 4 weeks for an answer. As others in this thread have mentioned, I called the #, gave them the 4 letter code, and afterwards spoke to a credit analyst who approved me on the spot! I was also approved for way more than my 2nd 529 card back in May (I maxed out my rewards on the first one, so I applied for a 2nd one. With a high limit on the first card, they only gave me a $1K limit on the 2nd 529 card and I had to reallocate credit lines to use it). They say I will receive my new card in 5-7 business days.

Thank you OP for posting this deal!

davelanton, would you mind posting the various limits you received from MBNA, including this one?

Any other info you feel comfortable including, e.g. the income you gave them, would be helpful also...

The question was addressed to davelanton, but since I was approved for this card as well, you may find the info useful:
The income I stated at the time of application: 90K
monthly morgage: 300 (it's true, the morgage is only for $50K, it's a condo, and I don't have to include the maintence fee in the monthly morgage, right?)
approved for: $5K credit line, after talking to a credit dept CSR. He asked my why & how I've accumulated $25K+ balance on two other MBNA cards, and why I was only making minimum payemnts($15). I've thought that after hearing that it's under 0% apr and I intend to pay it off before expiration, he would not be happy... but it seemd that he only cared about aproving as many people as possible... so after I told him that I have $ in the bank to pay off the balances when 0% expires, he was satisfied.

What % util of MBNA credit line is your $25K+ balance?

98% on one card and 97% on the other

I vary between 90% and <50% utilization across my MBNA cards (my 0%APR maxed out cards are from other issuers that don't charge a fee), but I do cycle through large payments each month to maximize rewards. I pay off the balance in full each month. I just paid off $10K balance on Friday, and the credit analyst made a point of saying that I have an excellent history making payment on time, and she could offer me instant approval for $7.5K.

so that brings me to:
529 card #1: $10K
529 card $2: $7.5K
new card: $7.5K
TOTAL: $25K (the theoretical limit for one who does not do balance transfers with them)

As soon as the card arrives I'll reallocate credit to my 529 card and leave just $1K on this card, since the most I want to spend is $250/month to maximize this reward card.

edit: the AAA gas card I mentioned earlier is technically in my wife's name, with me as a JOINT card holder. I set it up that way to reallocate some of that credit to the 529 cards, which helped get me to limits I have now.

Wow, did not know that it's possible.

Is this normal for MBNA to allow to transfer credit line in a situation like this or did they make an exception for you?
Have you done similar things with other card issuers?

alert mods

I think it may be 'safer' to apply by phone with MBNA, that way they could ask you to realign credit limits from other cards (if you have unused MBNA credit lines) and approve you that way if your credit approval is iffy. I was sort of nervous to apply for various reasons: self-employment, big reduction in income from previous years due to sale of rental property, and I was recently turned down from AT&T Universal for a credit line increase which was suggested by the CSR herself, but was subsequently approved for a credit line increase with Citi Dividend (same issuer) after I paid off 10k of 0% balances (promo ended).

I don't know if I am following this correctly, but I just experienced the same benefit of transferring credit lines from a JOINT card to this card (which is applied only in my name, husband authorized user).

alert mods

I have not tried it with other issuers, but I doubt MBNA would make an exception for me. It was more complicated than simply reallocating among cards in the same name, and I think we both had to sign some paperwork and fax it to them to make it happen (it was over a year ago and I can't remember the procedure now). But the end result was I was able to transfer $7K from my wife's individual card to our joint card (effectively making both cards joint). This was long before I read the thread here about NOT having joint cards. But the upside is that I was then able to apply for 529 card #2 and this new card as an individual and reallocate from the joint cards to the individual cards!

Let this be a warning for divorce attorneys everywhere!

Ok, just went through application process and turns out that the cash rebate offer with 10% but only at grocery and hardware stores (code HGW4), however the offer code HGW1 is the one with 10% for all purchases untill 6/05.

EDIT: amending this post with information learned later, once I got the card - 10% cash back on ALL retail purchases issued on each monthly statement is in addition to the worldpoints rewards, which are 1 for 1$ and roughly correspond to cashback of .8% to 1%

Yes, this is the problem with word of mouth source codes....unless we see it in print for ourselves, kinda hard to tell huh?

I wasn't going to apply until I saw the offer in print but decided to take my chance on this one...well enough said.

alert mods

I just applied and she never asked for a code. CS asked did I receive something in the mail. I said yes and she looked up my info. Only after that I was allowed to go for the application. Couple of times I verified that the card was MBNA Cash Back Platinum Plus Mastercard. I guess they are going to give me regular card with 1% rebate. Will have to go through the cancellation process if I am getting other than this one.

TooShy, you were right

Just called MBNA acct specialist( (866) 865-7843 ) with questions about my other cards(was thinking about converting AAA in to Investment Rewards Card) and decided to make sure that promo code is applied to my new card... it turned out it was not.
So what I had to do is have them close the card(which I have not yet received) and apply for another one with promo HGW4 which gives 10% for Drugstores, Grocery and Hardware(i.e. Home Depot).

HGW1 promo code, I was told is only good for 2% cash back on selected merchants.

I was also told that they currently do not accept applications for investment rewards card(www.investmentrewards.com)

Sorry
MV (milage varies)
