BofA new checking account bonus took less than a month. Opened (second) account on 10-21. Received $50 deposited to account today, 11-12. This is my second bonus with them in the last few months-- I opened a savings account a while back and got a $50 bonus for that one too. I've since closed that account with no complaints on their end.
Thanks again markber for a great post! |

*Offer good at all Fidelity Bank locations Upon opening, the $50 will be direct deposited to your new checking account and subject to Form 1099-INT Rules. Free Checking, $25 deposit to open. Annual percentage yields are effective as of 7/14/04 and are subject to change. Money Market Banner APY was 1.00%, $2,500 deposit to open. Superior Money Market APY was 2.03% for $50,000+, %5,000-$49,999 APY was 1.50%. $0-$4,999 APY was 1.00%, $5,000 minimum to open. Fees could reduce earnings. Bonuses will be limited to one checking and one money market offer per customer and are not available if previously received. Some restrictions apply for Fidelity Bank employees and their immediate family.
**Must be 18 to register for shopping sprees. Limit one entry per customer. No purchase necessary.
Edit-- This afternoon I walked into the local Fidelity branch with $25 and 20 minutes later I've got a ZERO fee checking account with ZERO minimum balance requirements with $75 in it. Easiest $50 I can recall.
BTW, _after_ the account above was opened and closed, I received a solicitation via snail mail addressed to me to "open a new account and get $50 bonus" -- the same type of deal as before. I went in and attempted to open an account but they shot me down because I was "ineligible." The invite in the mail didn't say anything about eligibility or limitations. I tried my best with the branch manager, but he shot me down. At least I got a free cookie and bottle of water while I was waiting |

Keep up the good work markber.
I just wish the list had a few more giants on it other than BoA. I'm thinking it's a good idea to secure an account I can use when I move for grad school and my first job in the next 5 years, before this type of exploitation yields a ChexSystem record.
And hopefully they'll be easier to sign up for than HSBC. What a pain! lol |

I am trying to keep an eye on giants. Have you done the Citibank $200 deal?

Hmmm, why do you worry about ChexSystems? As long as you do not do anyhting bad to your bank accounts, you should be fine in a long run. Just do not do too many bank deals before you apply for an account you really want.

If you have an HSBC free account, be careful. They tend to use any excuse to convert it to basic checking that has a monthly fee. You would think that bill payment, ACH-in transfers should be counted as customer activity and prevent the conversion, but they apparently do not consider them as customer activity. |

What is a Chexsystem record? Are these records considered when you apply for credit cards/loans, etc. or only to open bank accounts (CDs/Savings/Checking)? |

For Citibank, I don't have enough for the minimum balance. Most of my money is in equities.
In regard to ChexSystems, I've done 3 bonus offers so. I'll probably end up cancelling 2 of those in 6 months. And if new $50+ offers come along, I'll be very tempted to hop in. Given that I don't know how many is "too many," I'm concerned about CS.
Add to this that I messed up when applying with HSBC, I used my current address rather than my permanent (on ID) and didn't notice the non-conspicious "proof of current address" requirement in the mail packet. So they just have a $5 cheque and a copy of my driver's licence from me. Perhaps they might think I filled out the form falsely and will report it. I dunno, but I'm anxious for their mail reply so I can get things fixed if possible. |

If you can come up with $1500 for initial deposit, you can then take them back from Citibank EZ checking account and avoid a monthly fee by using ACH transfers (via ING Direct, Virtual Bank, or Yahoo Fund transfer) as direct deposit.

What I heard is that it does not matter how many accounts you have totally. What matters is how many accounts you opened within the last three months before you apply for another account. If you opened more than three (e.g four) accounts within the last three months, your application for a new (e.g. fifth) account may get rejected.
Example: My application for a Virtual Bank account was rejected due to this reason. I waited couple months without doing any bank deals, applied again and was approved by Virtual Bank.

I would just call them and ask what you should do in this case. One of the possible options is to mail or/and fax them your utility bills with your current address. |

... only when you open bank accounts. Check this link for more info.
The reason why banks do not like people with many accounts is that they are afraid of kiting. Apparently, ChexSystems does not have or provide banks with informaion about number of bank accounts a customer have. What it can provide is the number of requests of a customer's ChexSystem file within certain period of time. Banks use this information to "guess" number of accounts that prospective customers may have opened recently. |

With the arrival of Check21 and overnight settlement, do the banks still have a rational basis for their fear of kiting? |

Did they tell you what they would consider as customer activity ? I guess I should write a check to myself every month or so, or use a WaMu ATM (with HSBC assessed 1.50 foreign ATM fee) every 80 days since no HSBC branches within 30 miles. |

I think it would be great if people could let others here know which of these banks did hard pulls on their credit report when they signed up. I'm kinda reluctant to sign up for anymore, as I need to keep inquiries low enough to continue to get credit signup bonuses. LOL. I don't want a free airfare deal to come along and approval being denied b/c (chequing) bank inquiries.
An aside: HSBC is taking forever to set up my account. |
