My wife and I both have AMEX logins, and I can seem to only get access to one.

Yes, we have two Ameritrade accounts with distinct logon info. I believe I got this to work by setting up an alias for one of the two accounts so it looks like a different institution to MS-Money, but still links to Ameritrade.

I sorta like Money 2005...I recently switched from Quicken 2002.
Only thing that drives me up the wall is duplicate entries whenever I sync my checking acct.

Do you know if jGnash XML files can be read by GNUcash and vice versa? Are they compatible with each other? I've been playing around with jGnash and it works pretty well. I'm waiting on a HD before taking the Linux/GNUcash plunge.

I am unsure of getting jGnash data into GnuCash. The GnuCash->jGnash parser was quite simple, so I would imagine that it would be simple to go in the opposite direction. I just don't know if it has been written yet.

If you are seriously considering switching to GnuCash, I'd try it off of a LiveCD before investing a lot of time with jGnash. It sounds like you want a cross-platform solution, though, so you may want to continue using jGnash when/if you do switch to Linux.

I use www.herbudget.com Really like it, and can log in from any computer. Worth every cent of the $2.99 monthly fee.

Thanks for your input! I had good results with Knoppix' live CD but I couldn't install GNUcash when booting from the CD. Do you know how? I couldn't find a live CD that had GNUcash already installed. So far, jGnash seems to be a very capable program and I would encourage people to give it a try.

On the newest knoppix, you canapt-get -t unstable install gnucashOr you can use it on Knoppix 3.1 (and probably earlier) without installing. It also appears to be on gnoppix (makes sense--gnucash requires a lot of gnome libs), mandrake move, knoppix std, and several other livecds. While reviewing Linux personal finance apps, also check out kmymoney. I'm a very happy GnuCash user, but that project does seem to be attracting a lot of attention.

Has anyone considered using QuickBooks or Peachtree for their personal finances? I've never used these products, but I love the idea of accrual accounting (like the freeware that was mentioned above).

I used QuickBooks before I switched to Money before I switched to GnuCash. It is nice enough, but over-priced. When I used it, it didn't have the same statement download/parsing abilities of the other software mentioned. I don't know if that has changed.

Does anybody know how to transfer Money 2005 file from one PC to another. I am backing up the file and have tried all tools for doing it. When I get it to new PC and try to make to restore bacup, it gets stuck and does not do it.

Did you try just copying the regular Money file, and then opening it on the new computer? The Backup/Restore seems to be an extra unnecessary step to me.

I have done that...simply exported/saved the file, transferred it, imported it/opened it. Problem with that is the Online Passport database. Money tries to sync whatever computer you're working on to their online DB. That got annoying.

does anybody know if jgnash supports investment account? Thanks.

Yes, it does support investment accounts. It can import securities prices from yahoo.

I don't know what the problem is. When I try to open the file in new PC, I get the message that money can't open the file as it is read only (when it is not) or drive is write protected (which it is not)

could some good soul point me to step by step procedures for doing the job

thanks a ton

Any one know how to add a "simple daily interest" loan to MS Money? I beleive I had this in quicken, but my student loans don't show up right (P/I calculation) in MS Money.

Right click on it to get to properties and uncheck read only

I tried opening copying and opening the integrated big file but it didn't work. Finally I opted for creating a new account and exporting and importing each individual account file. Checked on Microsoft forums and I am not the only one who faced this problem with Money

pashu - when you installed money on the new computer did you try opening it, letting it create a new file and let money download software updates, then opening up your file? money 2005 already has a new data file format that is not backwards compatible with the version of money 2005 that shipped on cd. see - http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=177 for details
