Going the 0% credit card route sounds like a viable option, but the more cards you open, the worse your credit score gets I think. A few questions:
Does anyone have links to cards that are 0%? How long are they 0% for? What happens when 0% expires, do you close your card and reopen another? How does opening all these cards affect your credit score?
Thanks! |

Anyone investing in ING Directs funds? I see they have a new Balanced fund and a few others. Just curious on others thoughts of investing with 0% cards in these funds. Perhaps a percentage of thir money is invested in a bit more aggressive styles such as this. |

Most, if not all, of the 0% balance transfers I did were from CCs I've had for a long time. I've got >$120k parked in two ING accounts right now. I set up monthly payments well in advance to ensure that the "missed a payment" rate will never kick in. Just before the 0% expires, I pay off the remaining balance. The first one I paid off sent me another check just two months after I paid them off. I guess they like me because I paid my bills on time |

Search the finance forums for current 0% deals. The promotion lengths vary from deal to deal. When it expires, you can keep the card open and wait for that company to send you a new promotion, or you can jump on a new promotion with another company, or both. Too many recent credit inquiries generally lowers your score and having a low percentage of your total credit available also lowers your score. But the mere opening of a new account(s) can actually raise your score by giving you more available credit (and thus lowering your percentage of credit used). Until you do the BT, that is. |

how do you fund your ING account with a credit card though? Isn't that considered a cash advance, thus negating the 0% interest and kicking in the 20% cash advance rate? |

When you request BT checks, you can have them made out to yourself. From there you just deposit them into your bank account and have ING pull it via their regular ACH transfers. Alternatively, I think you might be able to just send the check to ING but I've never done this. |

Still not sure how to do this---it sounds like you are describing how to pull money from a checking account, not how to fund via a credit card. |

thanks a bunch...just opened an account there, got a $50 signup bonus, within 2 business days. It'll be a good, very safe, place to park the interest free loans that the government is giving me. |

You can't fund your ING account directly via a credit card by charging your card as you do purchases. You're absolutely right, that would be a cash advance. But you can do it indirectly by requesting (from your credit card issuer) a balance transfer check be made out in your name, then depositing that check into your local checking account and then initiating a funds transfer from that account into your ING account (using ING's website). Or you may be able to mail that check straight to ING without first depositing it in your local checking account, but I've never tried that.
BT checks are designed to pay off other balances but many (all?) card issuers can make the check out to you instead of your creditor if you want and then you can do as you please with it. If you go ahead and deposit it into an account, any account--checking, savings, brokerage, ING, etc.--the end result is the same as a cash advance, but technically it's a balance transfer so it's subject to different terms, ideally a promotional 0% rate. |

I have $47K earning 3.04% APY at Superior Savings, $24K earning 4% in an SMCU 6-month CD, $1K earning 2.75% in a Presidential checking account, and $27K that I've used to pay off my HELOC (used to be my mortgage) that would otherwise be costing me 4.5%.
Used to have more out at 0%, but $26K came due ($4K at Chase, $10K at BofA, $12K at BankOne) and had to be repaid. Still trying to consolidate the $4K Chase line and $12K BankOne line to cards with active 0% BT deals.
How long have you had the superior savings acct? I just called them and they don't have direct deposit. I would have to send them a personal check. And, in order to get money out, I would have to call them and request a check. Have you had any experience with this? I am trying to figure out if it is worth the hassle if I put about 50 grand in vs INGDirect as I may need to take money out 3-8 times a year. |

Which link did you use to get the signup bonus? I'm looking to open another INGDirect account in my wife's name. Thanks. |

So you guys max out new 0% CCs by BTing the money to yourself. Then you guys put that money into a bank to earn interest and make the minimum payments on the CCs. Then you guys just pay it back before the 0% promo ends.
I'll start doing this in Feb since I'm applying for financial aid in Jan and don't want to put the high amounts of cash on the FAFSA form |

Yep, it didn't say anything about a referral bonus, but it showed up about 2 days later. |

Just do it! If people need their hand held to get free money then they don't deserve it.
Whats ironic is that I did this deal, and the next week I bought Money 2005 so for some reason I now feel cheated.
