I have been a long time customer and cheerleader of First Internet Bank of Indiana. I always beleved their slightly lower rates were more than ofset by their excellent billpay terms and customer service. Well, the recent update to the bill pay system has led me to retract those endorsements. Here are the problems with the new bill pay:

1) No way to edit a pending payment. You must delete the payment and reenter.
2) No way to delete an e-bill. You must pay it for it to be deleted. Even paying it and then cancelling the payment does not make it go away. [Edit: you can detlete it as per my post below, but it is much more difficult than it used to be]
3) The system no longer automatically adjusts the payment date to land on a business day. Instead it shows an error that you must go back and fix. With so many credit cards setting a sunday due date, this is a pain.
4) Very difficult to pay anything other than the minimum due of an e-bill. The old system at least showed you the full balance of an e-bill while you typed it in. The new system only shows the full amount due in a popup window which is hidden when you start typing the payment amount. Other banks give you the option of paying the minimum, full balance, or other.
5) Using firefox gives you a security warning that probably is not accurate.
6) The nickname for a bill does not show up in the pending payments section or in the list of bills when you are trying to edit information. If you have several credit cards at citibank or MBNA for example, you can only tell them apart by the last four digits. As AMEX aparently uses the same last four numbers for all accounts, there is absolutly no way to tell these apart.

I have communicated these problems to First IB and will give them a few months to tweak the system. However, I will be looking for a new "go to" bank if most of these are not fixed.

I know presidential uses the same bill pay system, do people who bank there have the same problem?

Edited to include Presidential Bankin the title since this appears to apply to presidential bank as well

presidential is same, the pro of the new system is that for some bill, you can schedule it on next day

Thanks for this list longwood8. I've only had to pay 2 bills since the conversion this past week, and haven't noticed these issues.

I'm suprised that these would be a deal-breaker for you, given how much else FIBI excells at. It seems like your suggestions could easily be addressed, and they are offset by the quicker payment time, as CornHusker mentions.

What do others think of the new interface?

My billpay is a fairly regular routine: I get a bill, then I set up the billpayment for the full balance to be paid on the due date. Paying bills quicker is of no advantage to me since I set up the bill pay weeks in advance. If I need a quick payment a credit card company can usually pull the money faster. So there is no advantage to the new system for me, only the disadvantages listed above.

The simple act of paying a bill in full, the one thing I do most at an online bank, has gone from fairly easy to a big pain. That is reason to switch.

Thanks for contacting FIBI about this. Hopefully they'll do something about them.

Just to clarify: I meant that these issues "could easily be addressed" by checkfree or FIBI, not by you.

I agreed with Longwood8, now their billpay are much worser than before

Yup, the changed Presidential's also, and it's much worse now.

Reminds me of the old vs. new Yodlee. Why?!??!???

alert mods

I absolutely agree. The new bill pay service is a chaos.

alert mods

I didn't find the changes to be so annoying. In terms of the payment day, instead of manually typing it in, click on a little calendar icon next to the date field, and it will show you all eligible dates.

What is an advantage of using this billpay vs. MBNA's billpay?

None, but there are some merchants that can not be paid by MBNA billpay.

I recieved an email from first ib about the problems. they showed me how to delete an ebill (it is much more difficult than before and requires numerous clicks, and given the number of $0 ebills I recieve this will be a big pain)

No other problems were addressed.

I will probably be moving back to pcbanker. Anyone have any thoughts on their bill pay?

I've had similar experiences lately with their new bill payment system. Their bill payment was the main reason I've stayed with them so long.

Anyone using USAA's bill payment system? I just got an offer in the mail for a savings/checking account with free bill payment.

So how do you do it? I've got the sae problem with ebills I want to delete.

TIA

I will tell you how to delete an ebill, but you have to promise that you will contact First IB to complain about the changes. The more we complain the better chance something will get fixed.

Okay, these are the instructions I recieved via email:

1) Go into Bill History. (The link is in the lower right corner of the
Payment Center screen, under the current month's payments.)
2) Locate the e-bill that is due for $0.00. It will have a status of
"unpaid."
3) Click "View Detail."
4) On the detail screen, click the link to "File Bill."
5) The file bill screen has an advisory that reads, "If you want to pay
the bill by some other means, such as sending a check to the biller,
you can file the electronic version of your bill in First IB Bill
Payment. After you file the bill, you can no longer pay it through First IB
Bill Payment. If you want to pay your bill using First IB Bill Payment,
go to the Payment Center and pay your bill."
6) There is a drop-down menu that shows other payment methods: cash,
check, paid at biller website, paid through bank, not paid, and other.
You can choose any of them; it doesn't matter as far as I can tell.
7) You can add a note if you want to.
8) Click the File Bill button.
9) You will be returned to the File Bill screen. Click the "Finished"
button.
10) You will be returned to the Payment Center screen. An icon will
show that you have e-bills for the payee, but it will no longer show the
e-bill due icon.

longwood8, I used pcbanker as my primary account for a couple years before moving to BofI, then FirstIB. So my pcbanker experience is fairly extensive, though a bit out of date. I closed my pcbanker account in 2002.

-I didn't care for pcbanker's ACH in after they changed it in 2002. Even though it pulled money from external accounts immediately, the funds weren't available for 4 business days.

-Customer service also wasn't as good as FirstIB. I've had a few minor screwups with FirstIB, but always found it pretty easy to get to the bottom of them.

-PCbanker's billpay was neither poor nor especially good. I liked FirstIB's better. I don't have the sharp aversion to the new FirstIB system that you do, but admittedly I haven't used it much.

I've had ebills accumulating for a long time with FirstIB that I've paid other ways, and have just ignored them.

Longwood,
Your item 6. If you have several credit cards at citibank or MBNA for example, you can only tell them apart by the last four digits.

That has created a real problem for me, as I have two American Express cards with the same last four digits. I tried to pay the bill and had no way to figure out which one. Further, in the list I can't confirm in any way that I paid the right one. I emailed FIB and their response is that I change to their credit card and ditch AMEX!!! Are they kidding? They did tell me how to add the description, but that doesn't help me doublecheck that I paid the right one in the list. I'll be emailing them back, but thought you'd all enjoy that their only real solution is to switch to their credit card ... here's the email I got from them:
------------------------------------------------
I have found out that if you add a description to your payee, it should appear on the Payment Center screen so you can tell one apart from the other.

For instance, your payees may currently appear like this on the Payment Center (main bill payment) page:

American Express
*6768

American Express
*6768

To tell one apart from the other, go into Manage My Bills in the bill payment navigation, then select the top American Express listed in the menu. A "What would you like to do?" menu will appear. Choose "Update biller information." Information about the biller will appear to the right, including the full account number.

In Description, add a nickname for this particular account that will help set it apart from the others. For instance, if you use one AMEX for personal expenditures and another for your business expenses, you could call one "My Card" and the other "Work Expenses" (or something to that effect). Be sure to click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen.

Repeat this procedure for each AMEX you have set up -- or even all of your payees, if you are so inclined.

When you are finished, return to the Payment Center. Your biller information will now include the description, so the two entries I showed you above would look like this:

American Express
Work Expenses
*6768

American Express
My Card
*6768

Does that make sense? If it does not, please give us a call at 1-888-873-3424, and we can walk you through it while we are on the phone with you.

Another option would be to ditch the American Express cards altogether and open a credit card with First IB; then you could pay it by doing a real-time funds transfer.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for banking with First IB.

Was that a verbatim quote?

Yep!!! I cut and pasted right out of my email. I was so surprised!
