1.65% now. I tried to link a GMAC account to ED, even sending a check, but they rejected it, because it wasn't a "personal checking account" (even though there are checks!) Now I am going to try to link to a WaMu free checking account, but it's annoying to spend this much on postage just to pull out a lousy $2.25 and close the account.

Emigrant used to be great and competitive. Now they suck. I suggest everyone bail on them, maybe rates will pop back up.

This is what i wrote this week in the CREDIT CARD thread about their 1.4% credit card:

Just got a 'important notice of changes' to my EmigrantDirect 1.4% mastercard. (ALL for the worse.)

1) The min interest/finance charge is now $2.
WTFBBQ?! $2 min!!!
god, i remember many years ago when it was $0.50. I rmember because i was hit with that when i forgot to change the amount to send via bill pay. i was like $3 short and was surprised to see $0.50 instead of like pennies. Thats when i learned of the evil Min Finance charge.

2) Transaction fees for cash advances/balance xfers is the greater of either $10 or 4%.

3) Foreign Transaction fees:
No change in % (but they dont list what it is). However, if the company you do business with is located outside the US, you will be hit with this fee.
WTF?! my interpretation is that if you're at home in the USA and order online from a company in China, you'll get hit with this.

4) 30.24% interest if you have a 'penalty event.'
penalty event = pay late, go over credit limit, payment is returned for insufficient funds.
in addition to hiking the interest to loan shark levels, they are also hiking the penalty event fees to $39.95 for each occurance.

wow.. this used to be my main credit card till i got the Schwab 2%.

This does not bowe well for EmigrantDirect. Maybe i should move my $10k out of there? (need 10k mminimum to get 1.4%)

looks like it's time to bail. But where to?

I can answer the % question, it's 2% as I found out from a web purchase last month I wasn't even sure would charge in foreign currency. I'm thinking the 2%'s an increase from 1 or 1.5 sometime in the past couple years that I didn't notice.

The term changes suck but don't really apply to me, I probably won't bail with my 10k. Don't feel like messing with opening a Schwab account to stay higher than 1%.

...I can't imagine #3 means anything other than foreign-currency based transactions.
