Trial Balances and Tribulations describes importing MS Money data into three F/OSS applications. GnuCash did the job, but Grisbi and KMyMoney each had (different) problems with investment accounts.

bump. Thanks OP for maintaining this useful thread.

Anyone know where I might find it?
Thanks,

that's GNUcash I believe, already linked in this thread.

GnuCash is definitely NOT a Quicken clone. Per the OP, Quicken is a single-entry accounting system & GnuCash uses dual-entry accounting.

Grisbi might be the closest to Quicken in design (but GnuCash is still much more mature).

I've updated the tax software information in the OP.

Gnucash for MS Windows has been released.

Thanks noksagt. The download dated 4/28 says "unstable". Anyone try it yet?

DaveHanson said:Thanks noksagt. The download dated 4/28 says "unstable". Anyone try it yet? Thanks for pointing that out the "testing" status. I probably should have mentioned that. The announcement should probably be read by anyone who wants to try it. Similar warnings are issued from the installer, but many people might skip past that in their enthusiasm.

My primary finance application is gnucash-2.0.5 on Linux, which is the latest stable version. However, I have been using the 2.1 series on a Windows laptop on occasion. It is slower than on Linux (particularly startup (presumably due to all of the non-native libraries), but it is "usable." I haven't had any stability issues, but I do save my file frequently & make backups (in addition to the backups gnucash, itself, makes) "just-in-case."

The first release candidate of GnuCash is out. Those who prefer to be "beta" testers instead of "alpha" testers can give it a go.

Found another open source finance app today.

GFP (Yeah, it is called GFP but the url is http://gfd.sourceforge.net/).

It is written in Java so should/could run anywhere a current JRE is available. Note that it was originally written in Brazilian Portuguese and translated to English. It looks like it has good basic functionality today, and its usage is increasing.

Another one, very simple: Buddi

Also java. Don't know any more about it.

P.S. Notice that OP's link to the sourceforge index is broken.

Now that GnuCash is available on Microsoft Windows (and I don't have a Linux box yet), I'm looking at GnuCash as a personal finance platform (again). My stumbling block is downloading OFX files. I use Fidelity heavily. I was able to see partial downloads in QIF and CSV formats, but not OFX. QIF is Quicken's old format, is problematic, and Quicken no longer supports it. CSV is very bare-bones.

How can I coax OFX out of Fidelity without using Intuit Quicken or Microsoft Money?

alert mods

It looks like my second attempt to use GnuCash is ending like the first: in failure.
Fidelity gives MS Money and Intuit Quicken access to its OFX files, but no one else.
I can't download them.
Since I want to use Fido for billpay and checking, this is a big deal.

alert mods

I don't use fidelity, so do not know what formats they allow you to manually export from their website. What problems were you having with QIF?

Some online account aggregation services, such as Yodlee, may allow you to manually get an OFX & that may be the easiest.

People have also posted information on the URL & login info to use. See this post for an answer to your very same question--it contains the info to get it from Fidelity. Note that this may involve using another (python) program to download the OFX & then importing it into GnuCash.

I haven't played with the Windows version as much as the Linux version, so don't know offhand if the win32 version has been compiled with the right pieces.

However, (using the Fidelity URL/login info listed in that note), you might be able to setup OFXDirectConnect within gnucash:
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Setting_up_OFXDirectConnect_in_GnuCash_2

It should also be noted that the stable release of GnuCash has been released, so any holdouts who were letting others be alpha and beta testers could now give it a go on Windows.

OMG! It worked (sort of).
It retrieved my accounts correctly, but had "backend errors" when parsing the retrieved balances and transactions.
How do I follow up?

Try to get the exact error messages that it gives. Search for these errors with google and on the mailing list and in the bug tracker. If you can't find anything that matches your error, report it in the bug tracker and/or to the users mailing list. Feel free to PM me, but I might be slow to respond & I don't run it primarily on windows.

Thank you for your interest in my troubles.
Note that GnuCash got the list of accounts successfully.
