Which credit card company allows us to convert between credit card types? Sometimes it would be better to convert a card instead of applying a new one. I know there is some info scattered here and there. However, it would be great to collect the info at one place. Thanks for your contributions.
Here is the list of companies allowing conversion: AMEX Citi Chase (CC # will be changed.) Discover MBNA (except branded cards)
Here is the list of companies NOT allowing conversion: Capital One Household Bank |

Chase allows conversions, but not all card options are allowed. I wanted to convert my perfect card to a profit card, but that was a no go, so I had to settle for a double platinum card conversion instead. |

MBNA doesnt allow conversion with branded cards. Their AAA and Amtrak cards for example cannot convert to anything. |

I was able to convert from an MBNA College Card to MBNA World Points Card a couple of months ago w/o a problem. |

I have student platinum visa card (citibank) and I wasn't able to convert it to any other CashBack or non-student card. I also have citi dividend mastercard and wasn't able to merge them either. |

I succesfully converted my citibank student visa card to dividend card (although the limit is still laughable). i also have gotten my American Express student card converted to blue cash. i know chase also converts b/w cards. just threaten them with closing and they would do it.

shoot, wish I'd seen this thread before applying for a useless capone card. ($500 cl...grrr.). Was hoping to convert to a rewards card later since they don't add extra fees to foreign currency transactions, oh well. |

RE: MBNA. I have one of their no-benefit affinity cards (which I don't use) and called to see if I could convert it to the Fidelity 529 card. No dice. YMMV. |

Chase allows us to convert cards. But they change the card number. I just called Chase and confirmed. |

Chase did not let me convert my Chase Cashbuilder card to a Chase Profit card, but offered to convert to a few other cards which were useless to me.
Same thing for AMEX when I tried to convert the old Costco Cash Rebate Platinum to the new Costco True Earnings card.
My feeling is that each card has a list of inter-changable cards. If the one you want is not on the list of your current card, they cannot convert for you. |

Yes they did change my number.
It does however still have 04 stamped on the card. |

When they first launched the True Earnings they were having people switch with regular costco cards left and right - you should call back - only thing is you can go back to the old one but you can goto the new one - that was a few months ago not sure about now |

MBNA allows limited conversions but not for all brands though. |
