Which credit card company allows us to convert between credit card types? Sometimes it would be better to convert a card instead of applying a new one. I know there is some info scattered here and there. However, it would be great to collect the info at one place. Thanks for your contributions.
Here is the list of companies allowing conversion: AMEX Citi Chase (CC # will be changed.) Discover MBNA (except branded cards)
Here is the list of companies NOT allowing conversion: Capital One Household Bank
Chase allows conversions, but not all card options are allowed. I wanted to convert my perfect card to a profit card, but that was a no go, so I had to settle for a double platinum card conversion instead.
MBNA doesnt allow conversion with branded cards. Their AAA and Amtrak cards for example cannot convert to anything.

I have student platinum visa card (citibank) and I wasn't able to convert it to any other CashBack or non-student card. I also have citi dividend mastercard and wasn't able to merge them either.

I succesfully converted my citibank student visa card to dividend card (although the limit is still laughable). i also have gotten my American Express student card converted to blue cash. i know chase also converts b/w cards. just threaten them with closing and they would do it.
shoot, wish I'd seen this thread before applying for a useless capone card. ($500 cl...grrr.). Was hoping to convert to a rewards card later since they don't add extra fees to foreign currency transactions, oh well.
RE: MBNA. I have one of their no-benefit affinity cards (which I don't use) and called to see if I could convert it to the Fidelity 529 card. No dice. YMMV.

Chase allows us to convert cards. But they change the card number. I just called Chase and confirmed.
Chase did not let me convert my Chase Cashbuilder card to a Chase Profit card, but offered to convert to a few other cards which were useless to me.
Same thing for AMEX when I tried to convert the old Costco Cash Rebate Platinum to the new Costco True Earnings card.
My feeling is that each card has a list of inter-changable cards. If the one you want is not on the list of your current card, they cannot convert for you.

Yes they did change my number.
It does however still have 04 stamped on the card.

When they first launched the True Earnings they were having people switch with regular costco cards left and right - you should call back - only thing is you can go back to the old one but you can goto the new one - that was a few months ago not sure about now

They converted my old Costco Cash Rebate to True Earnings Card without any problem two weeks ago. I think they do allow conversion.

Question that doesn't seem to have been answered yet: If at Chase you convert to a new account type that has a 0% promotion for new applications, do you get that promotion even if you haven't applied for the new card (just converted from a diffrenet card type)?

If you have a Citi card that used to be a Wamu card, don't plan on converting, they won't let you.

Inspired by this thread, I just called MBNA to upgrade my blue Wachovia credit card to the WorldPoints platinum one. It used to be a First Union card; apparantly my replacement Wachovia card is now considered a "student" card.
The account manager was really friendly. He said 2-3 weeks until I get my new card, which will have a new number. (He said the old number would be active for 90 days so I will have time to switch over auto-billing.) Since this is my oldest credit card, I asked him about the effect this new number will have on my score, and he said it will have no effect because it's continuing business, the same as if I had lost my card and gotten it replaced.
While he was at it, he boosted my credit limit from $9,700 to $12,200. MBNA has periodically increased my limit without any intervention on my part -- I believe this account started with a $2500 limit. More available balance should help my score as well.

Just converted my att universal platinum card to a universal cash rewards card. They did ask if I wanted to take advantage of the 0% apr on balance transfers for 12 months associated with this card. I didn't have to reapply. It also showed that I could only upgrade to a regular rewards card, but once we did that, it gave the option of further upgrading to a cash rewards card so you just have to ask.

Converting cards can be of particular interest when faced with recycling former 0% BT cards. For example, I've got an AT&T Universal card that I got for the 0% BT, but now that the 0% offer has expired, I'd like to do something else with the card. I called up customer service and was offered to convert it to a 1% rewards card w/no change of account#, or a 5% grocery / 1% CashBack card w/new account#. I chose the latter.
This helps minimize the need for new accounts appearing on the credit report and subsequent FICO hit.

Chase is now open for converting between different reward cards, including those from the BankOne side, and I was told that the card number and account age will not be changed.

Interesting, mrbean. I have a couple of Chase cards left over from BT's that I'd like to convert to the PerfectCard which has a simple, no hassle reward structure.
I recently called MBNA to convert one of my HGW1/HGW4 cards, don't remember which exactly, it's the CashBack one that gives rebates only on grocery purchases and therefore nearly useless now that the 10% rebates have expired. I was told (by a credit analyst) that the two cards are of different types and I'd have to go through application. Tried to negotiate an "expedited" application i.e. if I go through the process will it be just a formality since we are really just converting an existing line - they said no, it will be treated the same as any other app.

I am not sure if they are converting non-reward to reward cards - probably. Doesn't hurt to ask. Interesting the CSR called it an "account upgrade" rather than a conversion.
Regarding the perfect card, I have the 3% gas version, and it used to be no hassle to me. Now that 5% gas+grocery is the norm on other cards, I find myself using the Perfect card less and less, and keep wondering if I have made the 9 purchases this "account year" to avoid the annual fee.
So I thought converting it to the "Chase Cash Plus" card (5% grocery+gas, no fee, a BankOne product) might be better - as CornHusker pointed out above. The down side is that the rebate will not be automatic on the next statement. It's a point system, and I have seen some posts here complaining about Chase's way of handling the points program since it's relatively new to them. Also a disadvantage about the annual cap on points.
Hassle either way!

I used to in one of Chase point program "Ultimate Rewards"? maybe this is the name, which gives 1%, it works fine, I hope Cash Plus program will be OK too.

B of A does allow conversions. None of their cards are that good, IMO, but I was able to consolidate two platinum cards' CL's into the oldest line and then convert it to a rewards card. The number changed, but the account age goes with the converted card and they only report the new line to the CRA's. I was able to do this with a CSR and didn't have to get transferred to retention.

I was not able to convert a Citi Dividend Platinum Select to Citi Professional Cash Card, their reason being that the Professional is a business card.
