Just closed my regular savings with HSBC 2 months ago, with that pathetic APY. Maybe it's time to jump back in again. Finally feel good to be an HSBC customer.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MONEY MARKET TRANSFERS ¨C During the statement cycle you can make up to six telephone transfers from your Money Market Account to your HSBC checking account if the account titles are identical. Average Balance Free Transfers Average Balance Free Transfers Below $2,500 0 $5,000 or more but less than $15,000 4 $2,500 or more but less than $5,000 2 $15,000 or more 6 We may charge $1 per telephone transfer for each transfer over the free amount.
In T E R M S & C H A R G E S D I S C L O S U R E , they mentioned a $25 bonus per customer, wehre can I find it, or it is automatic?
Reading the Terms and Charges, not sure why they phrase it "Money Market Transfer" limitations and fees, but I guess they apply to the Online Savings account too ?
Either way the federal limit of six will apply. And since they only charge $1 per telephone transfer for each tranfer over the free amount, if one slowly experiments to test out the rule, it wont cost much. $1 is a lot less than other banks charge.
Seems to make sense to open both the OnlineSavings account along with the Free Checking account for ATM access to OnlineSavings, since you can't link the ATM card to just OnlineSavings.
Open the checking account at a branch for a cheap travel bag.
Has anyone opened/funded an account in the US and withdrawn money at an HSBC branch outside the country? How are the exchange rates? Is there a fee for doing this? Thanks.

From the HSBC website:
How can I get an HSBC ATM or MasterMoney card to make deposits or withdrawals on my new OnlineSavings account?
During the application check the box for an ATM card. When your OnlineSavings Account is opened you will receive a new card, linked to your new account. You cannot get an HSBC MasterMoney card linked to only your OnlineSavings Account. It is required that the HSBC MasterMoney card be linked primarily to a checking account. If you want to add access to the OnlineSavings Account to your existing HSBC ATM or MasterMoney card, please call 1-800-975-HSBC (1-800-975-4722) Option 1.
Seems to me that you can get an ATM linked to only the Online Savings account.

I second that. Exchange rates were excellent when I withdrew from ATMs in England and France. I don't remember the $1 fee though. Where were you charged this fee?

I don't recall any fee either. I did ATM withdraw in Canadian dollars in Toronto, they just added to the exchange rate.

Bump for good deal! This is like ING but with a higher interesdt rate and an ATM card for instant access to $$. Also while not as high of interest as Emmigrant this is from a much larger bank (huge international bank to be exact).
Did you check the exchange rate you got? Was it better than credit cards or about the same? Thanks.

Better tell us how to open accounts in another currencies in HSBC to protect from the falling Dollar. Only in their offshore branch? I am still hesitant although almost sure my hesitancy is for no reasons. HSBC may fall just together with Great Britain or US. Right?
ccrzhh said: HSBC may fall just together with Great Britain or USAre you comparing the pound to the dollar ? If so, the pound has strengthened against the dollar greatly in the past 3 years. Almost back to pre-Soros 1983 intervention levels.

HSBC failing would almost be equivalent to CitiBank failing. Very doubtful it could happen, and British government would step in to prevent it. HSBC is a huge British based bank with thousands of international offices, mostly concentrated in former colonies or the east coast of the US. I havent read of any way to for US residents to easily open an HSBC account abroad (even if you walk into a London branch, w/o local residence information you cannot do it).
Alcibiades said: I havent read of any way to for US residents to easily open an HSBC account abroad (even if you walk into a London branch, w/o local residence information you cannot do it). Well, I've done that with ease in Hong Kong and Singapore. No residency required. Brokerage accounts could be a bit tougher, though.
The UK is probably more of an anomaly being 1984-country and all.
Thanks for the info on your first hand experience. I had only read of the general residency requirement in some other FW thread a while back, but perhaps it's possible in the UK and elsewhere (as you discovered).

I spoke to a CSR tonight to find out about receiving a promotional code. She said that a code is not necessary; as long as the account is opened by the deadline date, the $25 bonus will be applied. She also said that having a code would not cause the bonus to be applied any more quickly or easily.
I also asked what would be the best course of action to get the $25 for my wife -- a separate individual account, or a joint account with wife as the primary owner. I was told that NEITHER would work because the $25 bonus is limited to one per HOUSEHOLD. Does anyone have an experience to support or refute that claim?
Hmm. It was at 3.00% a week ago, now the Fed raises interest rates and HSBC lowers their's? Weird.

My guess is we'll know about that in the first five business days of April.
Well the rate has never been at 3.00 per cent. I work for hsbc bank the rate orginall was 2.71 with a yield of 2.75 then they raised it to 2.84 with a yield of 2.88.
Well the only thing that should hold you back is if your on chex systems. My credit isnt too great but i opened one up right online and was approved immediately.
Atm cards should take 7-10 days from when you open the account online and first get approved

No, the rate was 3.00% just a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it was a promotional rate but it was 3.00% for a time.

If you have absolutely no credit history, it throws up a "non-FCRA" error screen and says to go in the branch or call the 800 number. Went in the branch and they cannot open this account, even if they wanted to. Called the 800 number and they say to go in a branch. Anyway, will just keep calling the 800 till they figure it out.

The code is 'PCDFH'.

Is something up with HSBC? Lately over the past few days I've been getting duplicate "Welcome to HSBC" or "Welcome to HSBC eStatements" emails over and over again. I sighed up about 2 months ago and received those statements back then. Anyone else getting similar emails?
