So I can open up a Student Check account online, input the code, and after 45 days, I can cancel the account and won't be hit with any penalties? Am I understanding this right?
I got $50 last week from them for an account I opened, and now another $100.

$5000 minimum balance to waive the $20 monthly maintenance fee?

For a student checking account there's no maintenance fees for the first 6 months and a $4 fee each month afterward (unless a direct deposit is received to the account that month). There's a $25 minimum opening balance but no minimum afterwards. A student account also gets a "stuff happens" card which allows the student to waive one unexpected fee.
Also, "Account closing fee (if account is closed within 180 days of opening) ....................................$25.00" 180 days may be six billing cycles; if it's seven, there's the card as above.
From a different document I agreed to when signing up: "If your account reaches a zero balance, we may consider your account closed."

I have a dumb question on the initial deposit --- is the credit card charge regarded as a cash advance or a purchase?

The online chat rep indicated that it would be considered a purchase.

I signed for My Access Checking in late December, 2004 - my initial deposit was a $1000.00 AT&T Universal CC purchase

Thaks a lot, my dear fellow FWers. So the initial CC deposit of $1000 (MAX) will give me $20 cash rebate, which will make this deal even sweeter. I'm right off to open a student account.

So what is the strategy here for a non-student to keep the smallest balance possible for the shortest possible period of time and still get a sign-up bonus (minus early closing fee?)?

Hook it up to ING Direct (which counts transfers as a DD). I'll be tranferring small amounts. The opening balance is $25.
Everyone needs to remember (or go search and learn) past history of opening accounts with credit cards. This is a huge YMMV. Some credit cards (chase and now bank one to my knowlede, probably others) treat it as a cash equivilent transaction and do not earn rewards. Other cc companies decide to treat it as a cash advance irrespective of how some csr tells you it will be treated and you are wacked with fees.
This happened when the rush to open accounts at FirstIB was taking place before they changed their policy. The credit card companies were recoding the transactions as cash advances even though First IB said they would be a purchase. Even people who set their cash advance limit to zero were getting hit because the charge would go thru then get recoded. People who tried to open multiple accounts got wacked with multiple cash advance fees and then complained. Read your terms and you will see the credit card company gets to decide, not some csr at another bank.
Furthermore, the [edit: lady] who said that an ING deposit works as a direct deposit should go read the many threads here about Presidential Bank and others where an ING deposit does NOT work as a direct depoist. I have a Bank of America account and an ING deposit is called a "ach deposit" while the direct deposit says "payroll".
Just trying to help out the newbies.

This thread details that banks that accept ING as a direct deposit, of which, is Bank of America. Longwood8 may very well be correct as to what ING is coded as when transfers are done to BofA. I, however, do not have a BofA account, and I thought that the list on the thread was correct. So, I did read the thread, but I can't confirm myself that it's correct...sorry if I misspoke. And I'm a woman, not a guy.

According to PG, they did perform a hard inquiry through Experian when I signed up in December.
They did a soft pull through TU when I opened the account.

I think you're right. I called just to verify and they claim they don't but their terms do vaguely state that they reserve the right to use your information in any way necessary to determine ones eligibility for an account. Also, to anyone who thinks they'll fund it with an AMEX card, no go - Visa and Mastercard only and YMMV on how your CC company treats the transfer.
Also, the student account is free if you follow the already mentioned terms that others have said OR it's also free if a parent already has an account with them!

Ditto to lebice (at least I applied for one) ...
where do you find the checking account closing fee? I scanned the Personal Fee Schedule disclosure PDF and found the stop payment fees, insufficient fund fees, non-BoA ATM usage fees, etc. ...
Thanks again!

Please let me know if I got it right. Open a student account (CampusEdge) with $25, keep it open for 181 days, pay a monthly fee of $3.95 for the seventh month, cash out with $121.25 ($25+$100-$3.75). Am I right?
