Credit Limit Increases: Strategies for CLI Without a Hard Pull

So I read all this and figured what the heck. Here's how it went:

-Citi Driver's Edge Platinum Select card, opened in March with $4000 CL, luv button gave me $1500 increase to $5500 a month ago. No hard pull.
-BofA AMEX, opened August with $4100 limit. Filled out the form Sunday on MBNA net access. Bumped to $5500 on Monday (it was all I asked for). NO HARD PULL.
-BofA Visa Platinum-opened August with $5250 CL, got a message that the account is too new.

For the college students: I got these cards and limits three months into my first job, no previous credit history except student loans not yet in repayment, and at my current residence less than one year. With Citi, I applied for the student version and they approved and sent me the regular platinum version. Wish I had known about CardOffers though-missed out on some cash. Hope that helps any students lurking.

Ditto. AM3X has been good to me. I had no credit history and opened my first account with them in 2001. It was an AM3X green with rewards. I used it for about two years then applied for the AM3X Gold Rewards and closed the first AM3X green. (annual fees) I used it for 2 more years and received a $5K for the Optima credit card with a 6 months 0%APR intro period. I then closed the Gold Rewards card (still annual fees).

I followed your advice and asked for a CLI on the AM3X website. They gave me an additional $5K, which brought my AM3X CL to $10K.

While AM3X has been good, Chase has been more stingy. They started me on their Platinum Mastercard in 2004 with $500 and slowly increased to its current $1400 CL level.

Since I only have these 2 credit cards, I hope the new AM3X CL increase will positively effect my Chase CL and possibly my FICO.

gotta love MBNA - opened up an MBNA MLB card @ $9600, used it for one week, and called in for any CLI they could give me off a soft pull - bumped to $12500

So here's my recent (past few months or so) experience

Chase Rewards+ Visa: $400-->$900 Auto increase two months ago, when attempting to increase via CLI button, hard pull was required so I didn't do it

Citi MtvU Visa: $3000-->$4000 CLI Button after 4 months heavy usage, 2 moderate

BofA Platinum Visa: $250-->$750 Auto increase after it became an unsecured card a few months ago (was my first card)
..............................$750-->$4,750 CLI Button last week with absolutely no usage on it in the past 5 or 6 months.

My biggest issue is with Chase requiring info to go above $900. Hopefully in a month or two, with my new $3000 CL DCU card Chase will see I have 3 $3000+ limit cards and either auto increase, or allow an increase without a hard pull, would be nice since my utilization on that card every month is around 30%-50%.

EDIT:Slight formatting and Credit names

US Bank College Rewards 1K @22% APR (left over from my college days)

Told CSR this was unacceptable.

US Bank Platinum 2.5K @9.9APR

Thats more like it. No hard pull.

I called up chase to increase CL on my chase rewards card. CSR informed me a credit report was necessary for them to process the CL increase app.
I declined (gonna do AOR soon)

Citi(via CLI button)
Diamond Preferred - 4k -> 4.8k (had 6 months, so-so usage)
MtvU - 4k -> 5.5k (had 6months, ~300/monthly)

Advanta Platinum Business (2.5k)
Too afraid to call and ask for increase, as I generally only put ~$400/month of utilities on it, and don't want them to ask prying questions about my small eBaying business. Any experience?

Chase Rewards Plus(via phone)
I was hopeful on this one, but was turned away disheartened. I originally was accepted with 1k, and called to explain that my income doesn't account for my free tuition, etc. in graduate school, and that this would be my main card. I asked them for 2k, and they gave it to me. This time I called wanting a 10k CL, as I can claim a new household income of ~65k(2 housemates), and to explain that I have a ~10k credit line with Citi(I transferred 5k from MtvU to Diamond). The CSR wouldn't hear it, as she insisted that a credit pull was required. Given my first experience, maybe I'll try another CSR. Think they'll believe me without a credit pull?

EDIT: 1k->2k Chase was w/o hard pull. CSR #2 shot me down, too. Doesn't seem like they budge.

Got BoA increase today. CSR said they had a recent soft pull on record which allowed $13k->$16k. I asked if I could get $25k (to utilize their BT offer), they put me on hold and appproved. So it might be good idea to see which banks request your info then call up for increase to avoid a hard pull.

BTW, this is a very old account - like 8 years.

I've tried two different methods for CLI since the B of A / MBNA merged site went live. On the first try, I asked for a couple of monster increases and was denied; these attempts even prompted the credit department to call me on the same morning. With the second try, I requested $500 increases on my and my wife's Fidelity cards. Got $1000 increases on both. So possibly the system has a preset number that can be instantly triggered, as long as the request is less than or equal to that amount.

Since merger have left it blank as previously recommended here, and received 3 increases: 5K, 2.5K(mistakenly put in much less income & abnormally high mortgage for this lower one), 3.5K....card totally unused yet....

Most sites that have the CLI button do soft pulls, unless it askes for authorization to check credit. this worked beautifully and was successful on most sites. however, on AE.com, i clicked the button to increase my limit, and it immediately denied me. i got a letter from them stating that my CLI was denied because my credit utilization was >50%, and it provided Equifax's info. when i clicked the button to increase my credit, it said NOTHING about authorizing them to pull my credit info. i'm not very happy about this....what would you advise that i do, and what steps should i take?

Thanks!!! (stupid AE)

(stupid AE)I'd advise you to check your credit report (there are a number of credit monitoring sites, just search here on FWF). Most likely unless you filled out any forms, AMEX didn't pull a hard one. They can get all the necessary info from a soft pull, but if they deny you credit they are required to mail you about it.

You are pre-approved for $300.00 line of credit increase.
Account Number: XXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXX
Current Line: $1,800.00
New Line: $2,100.00

my amx is less than 1yr old, might even be just over 6 months and every little bit helps

you can request often, but should you wait couple months between and ideal balance less than what %? thanks

Does anyone still have the phone number to auto-increase the limit on the BestBuy card?

I LOVE AMEX...Got my Blue in September this year. Have gone 2400 > 4800 > 6400 > 8400 all in that time through the button. Hopefully next month I can have it break $10000 to have my largest line yet. My BoA is at $9800...so it might beat AMEX.\\

Edit: Typo

My AMEX went from 2000 -> 4000 -> 5500 -> 7300... but I haven't been able to get above that in the past few months. Hopefully will be over $10k sometime soon.

My other cards have much smaller CLI's.... from about 4000 to 5500 typically.

For some reason none of my cards are granting auto CLIs anymore.

My credit score is still excellent so I can only come up with 2 potential explanations.

1) 25K CL is the highest line for auto increases

2) The number of inquiries on my acct (much higher than usual bc of refinances and new money market accts) is a red flag

Have any of you been successful in auto CLIs after hitting 25K?

This has been discussed in other threads...25K is the auto-CLI limit for AMEX and I believe Discover as well. After that they often start requiring documentation.
