What is your IRS mailing address? It is possible some centers are backed up - They might need the above info just to make sure your identity when you call so might not be any big issue

next time don't wait to the last second to file your taxes...

OT: how are you informed when you're going to be audited?

You get a letter from the Proctologist telling you not to worry, a large hose invading you is not the worst thing in the world.

Ever seen the show Cops when they break down the door?

Mine has a similar status. I ended up calling the Customer Support number. I was told that I will be getting a letter from the IRS. The person said that its possible that I could have missed some documents needed and letter should be received in 30 days.

I sent my return on 13th April. I do have a similar reference code (4 digits), probably it should be some kind of an internal grouping code. Hope everything works out fine. I sent mine to Kansas City, MO processing center.

- CCG.

HAHA- nice responses - They send you a letter (certified mail in my case) alerting you to the fact that you are being audited and will inform you of the results - 2 weeks letter got another one asking to mail them (certified mail again in my case not sure if it's always that way) documents proving what I stated and it asked for the specific documents. They wanted a copy of basically every piece of paper that had any finaical information on it, bank statements, and brokerage firm statements. I sent it in and never heard anything else; I don't fudge my taxes so that was the end of it as far as I thought. A month later they showed up at the house and wanted to see the originals, where I lived, cars I drove, etc. Even talked to my neighbors to see if I took exotic trips etc. They have unlimited power and make it very clear to you that they do during hte audit proccess. Don't mess with the KGB I mean the IRS

You get a form letter via snail mail. At least that's what I got last time.

Both were "correspondence" audits, fortunately. Those are ones where they are just looking for you to send back a document or two or to answer a specific question.

edit: as Whiteguy stated, a correspondence audit can be the openning shots in what can become a full-blown proctology. Both of my correspondence audits were less involved than his. I'd agree with the KGB/IRS analogy, but my paranoia prevents me.

You must've had one of those full-blown audits they do as a sample to measure compliance. They pick those randomly (supposedly) and it doesn't have anything to do with whether or not they suspect that you did anything wrong.

"Night night, keep your butthole tight!"

Why wait until the last minute? Did mine in February, got the direct deposit in about a week, owed $8 to the state set it up to withdraw on April 13th, just to be safe. They are probably backed up with all the late filers. I bet you if the Filing date was June 30th, People would wait until then to file. Lesson learnt - DO IT EARLY. :-D

I got this message two years ago. Apparently, I forgot to fill out and send a form in with my taxes.

Is there a way to check return status online for those not expecting a refund?

i got a correspondance audit on my last year taxes and replied a few months ago. I got home from vacation last weekend and had another letter saying that i was getting an additional $241 refund based on the info i provided. i was pleasantly surprised.

my husband had "forgot" to give me some 1099s and we were gonna have to pay $474. i filled out a form to avoid the penalty on the early distribution because i was in school. I would have been happy not to pay anything, but ended up getting a little extra. i hope that this is the end of our brush with the IRS.

i tried to explain to my husband that we can't exclude any 1099s because it's reported to the IRS. Maybe he'll listen to me now.

fresno,ca. could some other late filers check their refund status and post their results?

Filed via Registered Mail on April 14 and already received my refund in my bank account. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border=0>

Im suprised people expecting refunds wait until close to april 15th to submit their taxes.
Since I got a refund this year, i sent them in like end of feb. i think, got the money in like 4 ish weeks into my bank account

I had to pay this year so I filed on the 15th. It took them almost a month just to cash my check.

My first and last correspondance audit happened 2 years ago. They wanted to come into my house and interview me. I declined and told them to fcuk off. I haven't payed my taxes since...

I filed around the same time with registered mail and received my refuned within three weeks

Does anyone know how long a 1040X takes to get processed?

Mailed one in at the end of April.

Mailed our amended 1040X on 3/26, and received state a month ago and fed last week. So it took them approx 2 months. But last month, since two years of 1040X were submitted, the one that didn't have a refund was sent back asking for original signature, the one that did have a refund was never questioned. I sent both years in the same envelope to the IRS. So I was bracing for an audit thinking that's why I didn't get a request for signature on the one due a refund....you don't know how happy and relieved I was when I got the refund check with 2 years interest! Does this mean I won't be audited on the amended in the future (being they issued a check)? Would be nice, since this was the year that was messy as a hornet's nest <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border=0>
