demingy said:Did you ever get this resolved? I'm curious because I'm looking at the website right now (as linked on the first page here) and it shows Wal-Mart under "General Retail" which would seem to indicate that at least that part of the CSR's statement didn't match what the RBS site implies.
It is resolved, but not in my favor. Basically RBS will classify any retailer however they want and there is nothing you can do about it.
It's still a good card, but it's very difficult to actually get 3% because: 1. Many many retailers are put into categories that don't qualify for 3%. 2. Even retailers that do qualify for 3% aren't classified in reasonable categories. For example, Buy.com and Amazon.com both qualify for 3%, but they are put into different categories. The Baltimore Zoo, on the other hand, is classified in the same category as Amazon.com.
If you want to maximize your CashBack with this card and only use it for purchases that will get you 3%, then you will have to basically memorize the list of classifications at RBSNB.com because there isn't much logic behind how retailers are categorized. For retailers that aren't on that list, the only way to find out how they will be classified is by trial and error. In my opinion, trying to memorize the classifications isn't worth the hassle. I still use it, but I simply leave the classifications up to chance and accept the fact that my net CashBack at the end of each month is more like 1.5% than 3%. |

Ooo, that sounds like a good idea. I'll contribute once/if I get/use my card.
Makeinu - That is a bummer. I think this could still work for me because my card line-up still gives me a small grouping of purchases that earn 1% CB so I'll just use this card to maximize my 1% purchases by turning some of them into 3%. Thank you for sharing your experience, now it shouldn't be too much of a surprise if it happens to me. |

"NO CAP"? Wow, that will be nice!
PS: Does Staples fall down to any of the categories?
According to the website and the invitation I received there is a cap of $60 back each month. Quoting from the invitation letter:
"And you can earn up to 60 CustomCash points every month-that's up to 720 CustomCash Points a year!" and on the back (small print): "You may not earn more than 60 CustomCash points in any billing cycle. Once the limit has been reached, you will not earn additional points for the remainder of that month."
This isn't a problem for me, but I know that some people here could reach that. |

Seems the Custom cash card has a cap but I have the old 1% card that I got about 10 years ago from Peoples Bank and then RBS bought the credit card division. I have no cap on that card and have received checks for over $100 many times |

This isn't the terms of my card. I have a $300 per month cap. However, even if I exceed the cap it just rolls over to the next month (I don't lose it). Also, there is no annual cap. |

It looks like they've changed the T&C then (since it also mentions this on their site), still a nice card to round out the bunch.
Edited: I remember seeing it on their site the first time I read this thread, but for the life of me I can't find it.... But it is in the invitation I received. |

Received the invitation a week or so ago - applied online and the application bombed. Site threw out an error when I submitted the application. Tried it again the next day, threw out a message that I had to call a toll-free number to complete the application. Never called, pretty much forgot about the card.
Guess what arrived in the mail today? You guessed it, two shiny new credit cards from RBS, one for me, one for my wife.
Looks like RBS will be my go to card for all charges that don't qualify for 5% or 3% rewards on my other cards.
Thanks for bringing this card to my attention OP - had I not read about the card here I may have pitched the invitation without looking at it that closely.
Green for you!

I just received the card today after noticing that RBS had checked my Experian report on the 23rd. I set up the account online and there were a few likes/dislikes re: their online account access. The main dislike was actually pretty minor, the account access site is definitely one of the less organized sites I've seen (think Emigrant Direct and Principal Bank and you'll have some of an idea). BUT I really like some of alert options, especially the option to get an email alert for statement close. Oddly, there is not only an option for an alert when your balance is more than a specified amount, but you can also ask to be alerted if your account balance is LESS than a specified amount. Anyway, I hope I haven't annoyed everyone with this information, I just thought it was kind of interesting. Edited to add that my CL from them is $6500. |

Applying now via phone (as I type), without an invitation, and it seems to be going through. I confirmed it was for the customcash card. So we'll see if it comes through... |

An application from where? If it is by phone numerous people have tried this and all have received a regular platinum card with no rewards. Scroll through this thread and you will see. I asked for them to mail me one specifically for custom cash so i could confirm in the print, but of course I have since been receiving offers for Plat cards with no reward. You must be pre-selected to get this card. |

well, I asked specifically at the start if I needed an invitation and she said she'd take care of it. I asked specifically at the beginning and specifically at the end if I was applying for the customcash card, and was told both times yes, so there was no way I could have been misinterpreting the words on the phone - so maybe the CSR was off in space. I guess I'll report back when I see what comes in the mail... |

I'm not sure if you meant to quote me, but as I had mentioned previously in this thread, I did receive the invitation by mail, I was pre-selected. I was just giving my initial experience for those who have also received invitations and may be wondering. |

If a cardholder asks, I think the CSRs just guess in their explanation why 3% wasnt awarded. |

Yeah I agree. CSRs never have a clue. Which is why I always say never call (contrary to the popular opinion of this forum). |

Never is a very long time which is perhaps why it is "contrary to the popular opinion of this forum". |
