I understand using paypal to pay for auctions. What I am wondering is how the credit card looks at the paypal transactions for the purpose of moving money. For instance, could I charge my CC $500 to my paypal account and it be counted as a merchant transaction? Or would it be considered a transfer balance. I've read how you can use paypal with some banks to direct deposit into checking, but this is not what I'm asking about. I want to take advantage of Citi's Professional Cards free mini I-Pod. But I don't want to buy anything on it. I was wondering if I could charge my CC to my paypal, then have it deposited into checking, finally writing a check back to my CC as payment. Would this be considered okay? Legal? Or is this money laundering. The promotion requires me to make $500 in purchases over 3 months, but I would prefer to do 1 $500 charge transaction in order to qualify for the ipod. Helpful responses are much appreciated! Thanks!

Is there anything offensive about my question? Your reply was uncalled for and unhelpful. If you want to be helpful, be helpful. If you want to be a jerk, then keep it to yourself.
Your question coudl be easily answered if you did a little work and searching on paypal.com site here: www.paypal.com

First of all I did research paypal. Looking at my initial question, I didn't do a very good job in asking my question correctly. This is my fault, it was too vague. I use FW as a valuable resource and tool. I try to help when I can, and learn wherever possible. Never do I use it as a means to put others down.
Second of all, I did search here on FW for quite some time trying to find the answer to my question without much luck. My initial post wasn't rude, obnoxious, belittling, or mean. All it was, was a simple post. I'm getting pretty tired of people like you who undermine the whole purpose of FW.
dawhim said:to answer your question. when you use your cc to pay to your paypal, there will be 3% of 500 paypal will take away from you. so yes, you can pay $500 to your paypal from your cc, but less 3% of 500. To be precise, the fee is 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction. On a $500 payment, that is $14.80.
currah said: I'm getting pretty tired of people like you who undermine the whole purpose of FW. I whole purpose of FW is not to answer basic questions about paypal.com. If you asked this question in the Citi thread about the Free Ipod you might have gotten more help.
The simple answer to your question is NO. If you merely logon to your paypal.com account (which I just did) and hit the "Add Funds" tab you will see that you CAN NOT add funds to your paypal.com with a credit card, you can only add funds from a bank account. This was NOT a very hard thing to find out all by yourself without posting your question on a message board.
The complex answer to your question is YES. If you open up to paypal.com accounts (or have a buddy w/ an account) you can use your credit card to send $500 from Paypal account #1 to Paypal account #2. This option is not really that hard, just beware that you cannot have two paypal.com accounts linked to the same checking/savings accounts at the same time. You would also need to use seperate email addresses. As mentioned above there will be a fee involved for the account that is receiving money from the credit card.
I am not sure what a "transfer balance" is but the solution above would NOT be treated as a balance tranfer - it would be treated as a regular credit card transaction.
I am not sure that a balance transfer of $500 would meet the 3 purchases requirement anyways.
===================
I stand behind my attitude in my intital response to your question. I did not know the answer to your intial question. It took me all of 5 minutes this morning to logon to my paypal.com account and verify the solution. This is something that you could have done all by yourself IF it was really important to you. The purpose of this board it to NOT answer basic questions about using Paypal.com. Notice how no one else volunteered to answer your question either. The purpose of this board is to dicuss financial strategies and financial deals. Could you imagine how many post would be here if every person in the Hot Deals forum posted a question about how to use paypal.com?
yeah what ^^ said. Pay yourself with another paypal acct, but you will lose about 15$ doing it in fees which is a lot of trouble to pay for. 15$ plus 2 months of waiting for a 80$ Ipod. What you could do is charge the card. Then a month later doa refund to yourself. What happened to me with the ipod deal is i bought 500$ worth of stuff after 3 months. Then i returned a 20$ shirt, and didn't realize that it made my go under 500$. But they still shipped it
how about buying a money order. i'm not sure about the rates or if they accept CC's as payment for MO's, but i believe you can get one at the post office for about $1. EDIT: can only use this method if you pay it using cash, debit, or traveler's check.
if you have an automated Western Union machine in your area, use that. a member here was able to buy a $149 MO for 85 cents w/o being charged a cash advance fee. this was how they were able to cash their gift card from the charles schwab CC signup giveaway.
Reckner77, my question wasn't about the Ipod promotion or paypal specifically, but how my "Credit Card" looks at how I'm moving money around using paypal, and my concerns of it being legal and not looked upon as laundering. I would consider this as a legitimate question on financial strategy since it involves money, credit cards, and the legality of how it is looked upon (I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing any illegal). Just because my post included the utilization of Paypal, the focus of my question is really about my CC and if there is anything I should know about how credit cards view paypal transactions.
I've seen several Credit Card promotions requiring a purchase, but not everyone wants to charge up their credit cards in order to take advantage of the offer. There are people, such like myself, that would like to charge the credit card without making a merchant return but prefer to pay it off immediately. If I had something I needed to buy worth $500 than I wouldn't have wanted to seek help in the first place. But because I do not use my cc's very much, I was hoping to minimize the time of charging my cc up by handling this quickly without having to continue to purchase over a 3 month span. I know of other reasons that I would want to find other ways of charging my cc so I could take advantage of the CC rewards without having to purchase merchandise, not specific to the Ipod promo. I'm more interested in finding alternative ways of doing CC Transactions without having to buy goods or services so I could earn points, etc.
When it comes to finance many banks, corporations, and financial institutions have its terms of conditions, policies, procedures, etc. stated on their websites for general purposes. However not all people understand how these conditions effect them and their unique situations specifically. That is why people ask questions. They ask because they are hoping someone can offer an explanation that might help them in their particular circumstance. Yes, we all could call the banks and ask them ourselves, but most people who post here choose to communicate via this forum for various reasons. And in my situation I could not find a solid answer to my question.
And although other members may have not explicitly answered my question, by no way were they offensive or mean. They were just adding to the discussion in a manner which doesn't hurt or take away from the inital post at all. And just for the records, I have had people PM with very helpful answers to my question. Maybe they just didn't want to post here publicly and subject themselves to unwarranted attacks.
I also referenced the Citibank IPod promotion so that others would understand the purpose of why I was asking in the first place. This way if someone else previously experienced a similar situation using their own CC they could respond by sharing their results and possibly advice on better strategies. Then others could benefit by the knowledge shared. Who knows, in the future someone may see this thread and avoid having to ask a similar question because of all the valuable comments, advice, and strategies people have openly and willingly shared will have answered their questions without the need to repost. I'm sure that most people would agree that the FW Search engine isn't 100% fool proof in providing the results of a search inquiry. Often times I have searched and researched for long periods of time without finding the info I was hoping to find. Some results show threads that have so many pages that to literally take the time to look through every page and post the results page shows would be way too time consuming. I have come to appreciate that most FW people do understand the importance of taking some time to research their questions or possible "hot deal" post, but sometimes someone does post something that has been covered or repeatedly covered. That doesn't mean they are lazy, haven't searched, or intended to inflict harm on others. And it certainly doesn't give right to anyone to subject them to verbal attacks. But it amazes me how quick some members are SO quick to verbally punish repost members or those who are not deamed worthy by jumping all over them, DOING MORE HARM than the initial Poster, because now they have created a hostile and uncomfortable enviroment within an otherwise peaceful community.
This type of behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances. Greed, cheating, self-centeredness, bullying, trying to beat the system at all costs, and other acts of despicable behavior are never justified and only reflects a persons true character to everyone else watching.
Your initial post which was removed by Mods immediately displayed an attitude of un-necessary rudeness. Just because you don't care for a question, doesn't give you the right or authority to jump all over someone. And by your own confession, you didn't know the answer to my initial question, but yet some how this ordained you to be belligerent towards me and give me red? I suppose the answer to everyone's finance questions could easily be answered by searching the internet, but this would defeat the purpose of the forum. I always thought the purpose was to help each other out, share information, experiences, and communicate within the boundaries of a community.
I'm really sorry that you feel justified in treating people with such lack of respect and with such little integrity. Like I said before, my initial post was never intended to be offensive, and the subsequent posts which I deleted for the common good of the forum also stated directly to you that if my question did come across as offensive I apologized, as I never intended it to be offensive. My question from the beginning have been very clear about seeking answers to a financial question. But it is clearly obvious that your posts have shown nothing but a genuine intention to display vicious type behavior from the start. Nothing justifies anyone to be so boldly malicious towards anyone just because they disagree with the worthiness of a post, valid or invalid. Nothing that I have written here is uncivil or intended to cause grief to anyone, including you. Merely it is to clarify my initial question and to disclose my disapointment towards the deliberate scurrilous behaviors of people whose actions claim are to be in the best interest of the FW community but in reality do more harm and bears no fruit.
Thank you for sharing your information about paypal. I honestly do appreciate the time it took you to respond with the details of Paypal's services, and I hope others will benefit from what your wrote. I would also like to apologize publicly for telling you "if you want to be a jerk, then keep it to yourself." I was not proud of saying it and therefore made the decision to delete all of my comments which quoted your unwarranted comments. I did this for the good of the community and to keep the focus on my question. You may disagree with my opinions or comments, and that is your opinion to do so. However, please try to look at this argument from my point of view. I'm not sure what I could have done more to bring about a more civil response. I wasn't trying to be offensive, I apologized if I did, I tried to explain how I did search here and on paypal, but yet I was still being attacked and put down, these attacks were being made by you, who at the time didn't even have an answer to my question, and you continue to defend your initial position? How would you have expected me to respond? And you would like me to believe that I deserved this type of intolerant behavior because you not only didn't have the answer to my question, but because you didn't believe that my question was forum worthy? You had a choice to just pass on the topic if you didn't have anything beneficial to contribute, but instead you saw my thread as an opportunity to rudely respond to my question with comments that did not have anything to do with the thread at all. You posted a Quick Summary with the only words, "NO, GO AWAY!" and then continued to tell me that it is members like me cause the integrity of FW to suffer? This makes no sense at all.
I really never intended to aggrevate you and I'm not trying to aggrevate you. All I was trying to do was find solutions to a financial question I had. Because I believe that goodness should still exists and is worth fighting for, I don't believe that I deserved in any way your crass comments and intolerant attitude towards me because I didn't meet the standards of your expectations. And if I do anything that is malice or mean, let me know. I don't have any issues with apologizing for bad behavior. In fact I usually welcome a voice of truth to keep me accountable for my behavior. If you would like to discuss this matter more, I would be more than happy and willing to discuss this, but using PM. If you want to continue to publicly harass me, well that is your choice. As far as I'm concern, this issue between you and I is closed.
1. I think paypal.com frowns apoun multiple accounts. I knew the answer to your question as soon as you posted it because I use multiple paypal.com accounts to transfer money between various bank accounts. I was unaware of the fee structure for credit cards - that is what I did research on.
2. Spending money on CC to rack up the points/mile/etc is the Holy Grail of cc usage - nothing unique to you or your situation.
3. Signing up for a Citi Professional Card,a business card, w/ no intent to make $500 in legitimate transactions AND get an iPod involves "greed, cheating, self-centeredness, and trying to beat the system at all costs". Stop pointing fingers, please.
4. My intial post was not removed by the mods. It was removed by another FW member who edited the Quick Summary
5. The following is NOT my words, it is the words that everyone reads before you posted your question: "Help preserve the integrity of our FW Fianance Forum by taking advantage of these resources!"
reckner77 said:1. I think paypal.com frowns apoun multiple accounts. I knew the answer to your question as soon as you posted it because I use multiple paypal.com accounts to transfer money between various bank accounts. PayPal permits you to have 2 accounts: one personal and one premier.
This was a simple question that required a simple search (or a simple answer). Why are you fighting back and forth over this thread? THAT is far more counterproductive than someone posting here and asking stupid questions.
Can we now take this info and update the sticky, that would be VERY productive in my mind.
Give the insults and accusations a rest, it's pitiful!!
edit: I gave you green (+ )currah, not everyone is as perfect as xxxxxxx.
WHen you buy something, if you can pay directly with your CC you should do that rather than going through PP with a CC to do it. Cause if something happens, you have to go through PP to settle it first & they can take a share. If you don't go through paypal to settle it, but contact your CC to settle it first, PP can delete your account. Such as happened to other people.
